David Remnick On That New Yorker Cover: It's Satire, Meant To Target "Distortions And Misconceptions And Prejudices" About Obama

What's Your Reaction?
Remnick New Yorker Obama

Earlier today, the New Yorker released its cover for the July 21, 2008 issue — and the reaction was swift and furious.

The cover by Barry Blitt, called "The Politics of Fear," shows Michelle and Barack Obama depicted as the worst of the prejudiced, smearing characterizations that have dogged them over the course of the campaign: Michelle Obama as a revolutionary in military fatigues, packing AK-47 and ammo; her husband dressed like the Muslim he is stubbornly accused of being. Both of them stand in the Oval Office, with a portrait of Osama bin Laden behind them over a fireplace, in which an American flag burns. Not very subtle.

Some are not alarmedClarence Page, longtime Chicago Tribune columnist (and African-American) said the cover was "quite within the normal bounds of journalism" — but not everyone sees it that way. It's been described as "offensive" and "trash" and "disgusting" and "just as bad as Fox News."

Why would the New Yorker publish such a thing? Why would they run a cover that could have run, irony-free, on the cover of the National Review? What were they thinking? We put these questions and more to David Remnick, the editor of the New Yorker. His answers are below.

This cover has quickly become very controversial. The Obama campaign has called it "tasteless and offensive." Why did you run it?

Obviously I wouldn't have run a cover just to get attention — I ran the cover because I thought it had something to say. What I think it does is hold up a mirror to the prejudice and dark imaginings about Barack Obama's — both Obamas' — past, and their politics. I can't speak for anyone else's interpretations, all I can say is that it combines a number of images that have been propagated, not by everyone on the right but by some, about Obama's supposed "lack of patriotism" or his being "soft on terrorism" or the idiotic notion that somehow Michelle Obama is the second coming of the Weathermen or most violent Black Panthers. That somehow all this is going to come to the Oval Office.

The idea that we would publish a cover saying these things literally, I think, is just not in the vocabulary of what we do and who we are... We've run many many satirical political covers. Ask the Bush administration how many.

Many Obama supporters have started to voice their anger over the cartoon, which they say does not so much lampoon the smear as perpetuate it.

Normally I'd want the work to speak for itself — normally I'd not want to explain jokes, or short stories, or a piece of non-fiction that we publish — people always read things the way they're going to read them. In this case, since I see that it's stirred the pot somewhat, and some people have misinterpreted it very quickly, I'm talking to you. The image tries to be as clear a possible the title tries to make sure of that. (Ed. The title does not appear on the cover, but is listed in the Table of Contents, in the magazine and online.)

Prior to greenlighting the cover, did you consider that it might be co-opted by Obama opponents as anti-Obama propaganda? If so, did that possibility give you pause?

Story continues below
advertisement

It always occurs to you that things will be misinterpreted or taken out of context — that's not unusual. But I think that's the case of all political satire, whether it's Art Spiegelman or Thomas Nast or Herb Block or Jon Stewart. I bet there are people who watch Stephen Colbert and think he's a conservative commentator, or maybe they did at first....a lot of people when they first saw Colbert said, "What is this? " What he was doing was turning things on [their] head.

I wrote this up just a few hours ago, and there are already close to 800 comments on my post. Quite a few of them are from people who say they no longer plan to buy the New Yorker and/or have thrown out their subscription cards. Do you have anything to say to those readers?

It's not the first time. I respect people's reactions — I'm just trying to as calmly and as clearly as possible talk about what this image means and what it was intended to mean and what I think most people will see — when they think it through — that it means. The fact is, it's not a satire about Obama - it's a satire about the distortions and misconceptions and prejudices about Obama.

A number of commenters also wondered if there was a cover in the offing that would depict McCain unflatteringly - do you have any policy or general customs regarding the even treatment of candidates in terms of coverage, and covers?

Oh, we get around to everybody I hope.

A few months ago, Rolling Stone ran a cover depicting Obama very flatteringly, with a halo-ish aura around him (see here). Recently the magazine followed up with another flattering cover (here). This week, Newsweek's cover depicts Obama praying. Do you think there is a double standard here about covers that are perceived to be 'flattering' vs. 'unflattering'?

We have a very different vocabulary for what we do. Our covers are very, very often freestanding, in that they are not exactly tuned to a story inside. This cover is not a sketch of Obama campaigning in Chicago in the mid-90s. Most weeks it's not a political satire at all — most weeks its a beautiful cityscape or seasonal image or - well, you know the magazine. Rolling Stone's a different magazine — their covers tend to be tied to a story — one of these [covers] was an out-and-out endorsement, if I'm not mistaken.

Right. The cover line read "A New Hope," and was explicitly labeled an endorsement.

About five weeks ago we were about two hours from running a cover of Obama in a Brooklyn Dodger's uniform, sliding into home. And his number was #42. And anyone with even a little bit of knowledge of baseball history knows this is Jackie Robinson. So this was kind of a turn on Obama being the Jackie Robinson of American politics - in a way - and no doubt people on the Obama campaign would not have found it offensive — they would have immediately understood what we were trying to say, that Obama had jumped an enormous historical barrier.

The only reason I yanked it was because it turned out someone had already done this, used this image on some political baseball cards. So I unfortunately held back that really good image. That was saying a particular thing at a particular time. This is saying a particular thing at a particular time, when these imaginings and dark fantasies and misconceptions about Obama exist. And we're putting it all together in one image and holding a mirror up to it and showing it for it for the absurdity that it is.

We have now published three very long, extensive Profiles of Barack Obama and any number of Comment pieces, and I think it adds up to detailed, fair, insightful coverage. This cover is part of the picture, too, but it uses the language of political satire and cartooning, not of reporting and essays, and sometimes not everyone likes that or gets what's intended. I would prefer not to over-explain things, but I'd rather be clear than there be lingering misconceptions about what Barry Blitt was exploring.

Enough Already Obama is a pololtian, He proved that last week with FISA . He is not the second coming, some of his supporters remind me of people who worship the MAC computer. The cartoon is clear to all who can read. Let us all stop this nonsense I will vote for him unless he continues his race to the right.

The New Yorker is a fine publication that requires some reading skills, It has run many stories attacking McCain. People it was a cartoon that's all. I increased my contribution to DFA and stopped giving to him.

I did not stop because he is a Muslim, Flag Burner that gives secret hand bumps: I stopped because of his FISA vote, the reappearance of a flag pin, and his taking ad-nausem about supporting religious charities.

The cover serves as a heuristic for the uninformed, low-information voter - to reinforce the reasons for which many people already plan to vote against Obama (even though studies show that high-information voters utilize cues as often if not moreso than low-information voters, but that's for another time). The physical portrayal of the rumors that have hounded Obama to this point, coupled with a lack of appreciation for satire and sophisticated humor, will undoubtedly cause even more people to vote against Obama in the fall (which is sad). I wonder what the Newsweek poll numbers (re: Obama misperceptions by voters) will look like in the upcoming weeks?

AlexisAshley, you make my stomach lurch. What planet do you hail from?

Back here on earth, we humanoids who reside in the fine country of the USA want the best for our citizens, especially our children and don't want them inheriting the ramifications of the sordid past as presented and delivered by Bush. Nor should they have to deal with the anticipated shenannigans of McSame.

Mr. Lizza, who wrote the 18 page article in the New Yorker clearly has a goal to undermine and destroy Barack Obama. His perceptions of Obama's early days in Chicago seem one-sided and self serving...."look at me, I've written a negative article about Obama while no one else has had the guts to".

I just listened to Terri Gross' interview with this writer on NPR. He and his employer have no idea of the negativity they have just thrown into the arena. Idiots.

What were they THINKING? Scratch that question. It's obvious. They weren't.

When even the presumably objective media does such damage to an eminently qualified Democratic candidate, you've got to wonder who's paying their salaries...and threatening their careers. Agree wholeheartedly with the early poster who called for comparable cover satire of The Double Talk Expressmeister, Grampy Senatory Johnny McSameAsBush. Maybe that would compensate. But not enough to make up for the original sin of stupidity on the part of the New Yorker's editorial staff.

Actually, how about McCain with a Hitler mustache. That is about as close to any character truth as the New Yorker managed to get. McCain in Depends is close to the actual truth.

And let's see Cindy as a Stepford wife-robot with facelift stitches visible a la Bride of Frankenstein.. The fantasy/fear that McCain evokes is the totalitarian completion of this Administration's dismantling of the Constitution.

The New Yorker Magazine is long reputed as a 'class act' sophisticated publication for very intelligent people... This Barack and Michelle Obama cover is more fitting to the cover of Mad Magazine, not the New Yorker. It appears to come from a Republican Publisher for political reasons. They should be required to come up with a new cover and pull the deeply insulting, partisan cover from the shelves, make that issue a collectible to be sold on eBay...

Okay, after I saw this abomination I got really mad, so mad that I had to draw my weekly political cartoon early, soooooooooooo
I now wish to present my latest cartoon, done in the interest of fairness, WHAT NOW TOONS would like to unveil it's version of the next issue ( we'd like to see ) of the New Yorker,
this time with the republican candidate for president this time, presented in the same light the New Yorker portrayed Obama,
I repeat, the same light...

Hey Keith Tucker....love your cartoon. Since Huffpo's link is NOT working, I will describe it to the bloggers.

A very similar setting to the NYorker Obama art, but this time we have what appears to be McSame in that living room wearing a green military uniform and his right hand extended in a Third Reich salute with a iron cross band on his right arm...the flag is still in the fireplace, but this time the portrait over the mantel is of Hitler and McSame's balloon says "100 Years in Iraq"

An arrow of indication states "In the Interest of Fairness We Present the Next Issue's Cover".

Perhaps too strong a message...but remember all, it's satire!

Thank you Tucker.

I just visited your site, what a incredible batch of cartoons and true political satire. Love the one with BIG OIL and Scotty being 'body snatched'. You have a new fan. I liked your take on McCain being a communist leader but its not giving a opposite view of what the New Yorker did to Obama. Look at what I wrote and see if you cant incorporate some of my thoughts into the cartoon. Remember, they highlighted all the negative things people are SAYING (that is the key word, no proof but what is rumoured) Do the same but add truth. They also didnt just go after Obama, they went after his wife as well. Do the same. Cindy has a closet full of skeletons just waiting for daylight. His time as a POW is fair game, in bed with his captors maybe. How about his being 'JOINED AT THE HIP' with Bush. and lets not forget all his Flip Flopping. and the coup de gras, his age. There are a million ways to showcase that. One last one, viagra anyone??? His insurance will pay for it.

I had to remove the "huffingtonpost" URL from the address bar to get your URL to load. This is not a SLAM, just trying to be helpful to the other readers who might also had this error.

Keep up the great work!!!

I think the only way the New Yorker will be able to undo this is to run one of McCain. Maybe in bed with one of his Vietcon captures, while Cindy McCain is popping percocepts and getting botox and her hands in her doctors pockets while she is lifting his wallet. In the meantime, John McCain nurse is changing his depends and another nurse is feeding him tapioca pudding and a doctor is trying to do an operation to separate the joined at the hips twins Bush and McCain.

Its really sad the New Yorker doesn't get it. Not every person in this country is an informed voter. There are many of us who read, investigate, talk to others, until we have a clear idea of who the candidate is. But, there are also many of us, who watch just one cable news station and believe all the talking points to be true. Does the New Yorker think that absolutely everybody is going to see the satire? Or the cartoon will only confim what they believe to be true?
I wish every citizen in this country would be an informed citizen, but until that becomes a reality, the New Yorker and others, should weight the consequences of their actions.

Let me get this straight. Because most people are too stupid to understand the New Yorker, therefore the New Yorker should not be the New Yorker, but rather some insipid publication that most people can understand?

I don't think so.

The New Yorker is not written for you. It is written for informed voters. It is written for people who not only watch more than one cable network, it is written for people who read books (shock!!!) rather than watch TV. The New Yorker does not exist for people who are uninformed, it exists for the intelligent. It is not going to dumb down just to suit the vast stupid majority in this country.

Already posted. Need approval. Some typo mistakes. But what I say. Too bad for the New Yorker. And a suggestion to the Obamas and their campaign people, which I believe they already have thought of. No more responding to that inane racist NY cover. Better to let it go. Don't bite this outrageous bait.

Much was said about the sheer stupidity of this so called "satiric" and funny? cover. The New Yorker has done itself wrong. They should've known better. They stooped to sell dirt. They sold their reputation and their good name. Now it is important - VERY IMPORTANT for the Obamas and their managers to restrain the themselves and express not more outrage. They should say no more. They must NOT stoop to the level of the stupid prejudiced racist NY editors and their "clever" cartoonist. Please don't even answer them any more. Let them stew in their own pot of inane journalism

The writer and promoters of this antagonistic article are no-doubt Jewish. Despite Mayor Bloomberg's heartfelt plea that the Jewish community cease attacking Obama with baseless accusations, this caustic behavior continues through mediums such as The New Yorker. I would think the gross antisemitism still pervaisive in this world would evoke sensitivity. Racism surely has deep roots.

Let's take the satire and hyperbole a little bit further. Let's imagine John McCain on the cover as an artist at an easel painting this depiction of the Obamas. What's your response, then?

I find it offensive as it serves neither to clarify, condemn, nor cause one to question. Despite the NY'ers claims to the contrary, this is not satire; it fails miserably as satire. It cannot even be considered caricature, as that is an exaggeration of something truthful, something real. It also lacks subtlety, the hallmark of GOOD satire. Most importantly, it fails to reveal the perpetrators of the presumed folly the author/artist etc. is attempting to expose, reveal, condemn, mock. I believe it was Richard Wolf of Newsweek yesterday who used your same hyopthetical. Put Rove or Mc C, or one of their ilk into the illustration, easel and brush in hand, standing back gazing approvingly at their handiwork, one of those thought bubbles over their heads, something along those lines, and at a minimum it fits into the definition of satire. As is, it only serves to solidify in some peoples minds the ridiculous misconceptions and hateful smears heaped upon the O's since day one. Those who do not support him, those uninformed, low information voters, will only take solace, find validation and confirmation of what they want to believe, in this illustration.

Maybe those who are so interested in the cover should actually read the article first before rushing to judgement. I'm sure Sen. Obama and his staff will do that. This knee-jerk self-censorship that seems to apply to anything that appears to possibly be anything close to potentially negative about Sen. Obama is not healthy. That mindset is a Bush-era holdover that we need to GET over. It really is OK to criticize or use satire to make a point, despite what the neo-con "uber-patriots" have wanted us to believe since 2001 when Ari Fleischer warned us all that we'd better "be careful what we say."

I did read both articles: Hertzberg's article on Flip Flop Flap and Lizza's long piece on How Chicago Shaped Obama. Neither has anything to do with the cover. Absolutely nothing! So what's your point? I missed it.

Aside from all the protestations of it being satirical, the cover is nothing more than attempt to be provocative and sell magazines. Unfortunately a sorry by-product of the urbane New Yorker mindset is that their cover reinforced all the fears and concerns about Obama for confused voters out in towns and byways somewhere in America. Trust this is getting lots of airplay and internet play. It has been and will be seen my millions. Too hip New Yorker staff can chuckle and say, "Poor fools, they just don't get the satire. tsk tsk."

The point is that the image is too powerful a smear. Remember there is an election going on. You are not counting on the fact that this magazine cover is going to be displayed in every magazine rack in the nation. You can be damn sure that this cover will have a visceral effect on the paranoia and racism that is rampant in America.

I just don't understand how the NEW YORKER could make such colossal blunder?

To me it demonstrates that the editors of the NEW YORKER actually believe that the world begins and ends with its very elite and limited readership.

This is an extreme degree of hubris and "intellectual isolationism" leading to a gross error in editorial judgement?

An apology at least if not firings are in order.

Elucidation of the Obvious Disclaimer (EOD): I'm not implying he does steroids, I just mean that some people would think he does because he hits so many home runs while other politicians keep fouling out.
