UPDATE BELOW

Q Notes reports that South Carolina governor Mark Sanford was not happy when the state tourism board started reaching out to to gay travelers:

When South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford learned that his state was being advertised as a gay tourism destination, he ordered a Cabinet-level department head "to do the right thing personnel-wise or process-wise to ensure this does not happen again," Sanford's spokesman Joel Sawyer told Q-Notes.

Sanford was reacting to U.S. media reports that a subway poster mounted in London, England, during Gay Pride week was announcing, "South Carolina is so gay."

A state employee who approved the ads was called to a meeting with management and resigned, according to Marion Edmonds, spokesman for the state's Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism (PRT).

If the employee broke any rule in the conduct of her job, it was apparently an unwritten one.

"I'm not sure if there were rules to follow," said Edmonds.

...

In the Governor's office, Sawyer said that the state will not promote itself as a tourist destination through campaigns "aimed at a specific group of people."

Story continues below

Sawyer said the "so gay" ad should have been "run up the flagpole," but did not know whether any standard procedures were violated at the time it was approved.

"It defies common sense that someone would sign off on an advertising campaign that controversial," Sawyer said.

An industry expert says the move will likely cost South Carolina tourism dollars.

But one gay and lesbian advocate in the state agrees that the campaign was misguided:

Such attitudes remain prevalent in the state, said Warren Redman-Gress, executive director of the South Carolina Alliance for Full Acceptance, a gay and lesbian advocacy group. He praised the motives behind the campaign but criticized it as poorly thought out.

"I wish the folks at the tourism board had done a little more of their homework," Redman-Gress said. "I get calls regularly, people want to know before I come and spend my hard-earned money, my souvenir dollars in South Carolina, is it a place where it is OK for me to be gay?

"The answer is yes and no," he said. "You live on the edge with the simple fact that you can come to South Carolina, spend your money getting here, and someone can come in and say, 'I'm sorry; you can't stay here because you're gay.'"

Mark Sanford made news last weekend for his inability to name any major economic policy on which McCain disagreed with Bush. He also recently said that removing the Confederate flag from the South Carolina Statehouse grounds is not a priority.

UPDATE: South Carolina's Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism (PRT) refused to pay its bill for the British ad campaign. So the South Carolina Pride Movement is raising the $5,000 necessary to pay the debt and save the state from more embarrassment.

The Southern states are still very racist and homophobic. My husband and I once considered moving south but realized we would be very uncomfortable having to hear casual use of hate speech every day. We would never subject our children to such a life, either.

bigotry begets hatred and begets wars.

too bad we have to live in the United States Of America ... just think we could be living in the bigotry-ridden "Hannity's America."

As to your intelligent name calling it fits the gay agenda everyone that does not support your life style selection,

call them a “homophobe” or a “bigot” they will back down.
In 1600’s the word that shutdown debate was “you must be a witch”.
In 1700’s the word that shutdown debate was “you must be a loyalist”.
In 1900’s the word that shutdown debate was “you must be a communist”.
Just like if someone says anything negative about Obama, they must be a “racist”.
Now the word that shuts down debate was “you must be a homophobe”.
Just another way to use McCarthyism. Same tactic different word.

I love the united states........

S.C. doesn't want gay tourism? That's OK, Massachusetts and the San Francisco Bay Area are both excellent destinations where it's OK to be gay. Better restaurants & clubs, too! C'mon out & see us!

Having been unfortunate enough to be dragged to South Carolina many times as a child, I can most assuredly state this is false advertising.

The gay advocacy groups in SC are evidently a bit strange.

The state is obligated to pay the ad agency for the campaign. The gay community does not owe that ad agency a thing--including a debt of gratitude. The agency was doing the state's bidding. Five grand might be legal-system chicken feed but the agency should sue to collect.

Redman-Gress has it backwards, too. Any LGBT person with a brain knows the southern U.S. is homophobic. Ad campaign or not.

Carpe diem: You don't assert your place in the mainstream by hiding. Collect and publicize data on the money gays and lesbians would have spent in SC if they had not changed their minds due to this flap.

As for Sanford, I'm sure we'll read about many squelched progressive ideas "run up the flagpole" upon which he sits.

I married a Gay in name only. My republican Gay father-in-law lives in North Carolina. Heck, an African American Gay just set a track speed record and is going to the olympics. I guess we can't ever hold a family reunion in South Carolina.

Among the South Carolina poster there were also ads that said "Washington is so gay", "Las Vegas is so gay" or "New Orleans is so gay". I'm really suprised that Sanford is so concerned about it - it's just and ad afterall. And i haven't heard anyone in DC, Nevada or Louisiana complaining about that kind of publicity! He should just be a little bit more relaxed about this whole thing.
But what concerns me even more is that his behaviour plays into the hands of the people who want to keep the red state - blue state myth alive.

Obama's fantasy of a cultural and political cohesion in America is very much in evidence here...South Carolina is a deeply conservative state, and there lies its problem...and his...not going his way in November. That said, this kind of discouragement of tourism by a Governor is ridiculous...why alienate potential tourists willing to spend money? Still, it is well known that SC is not a state that is welcoming of GLBT.

It IS an effective ad, and I'm speaking as a gay person. However, whatever advertising South Carolina wants to do as a place for gay travellers, it's homophobic idiot of a Governor just about killed their chance of getting any of the sizeable gay travel market.

Very stupid...Charleston or Myrtle Beach would be ideal meccas for gay tourists...I have several gay friends who live in Myrtle Beach and love it...what is this Governor thinking, turning away potential revenue???

If S.C. want's to appeal to gay travelers, is advertisiing itself as "so gay" doesn't seem a parpticularly effective way to do it. Whatever his motivation, the governor seems to have nixed a pretty lame tourism promotion.

As a lesbian, i do not think of myself as one of "the gays." And just what does that mean anyway . . . "the gays?" Do we say "the lefthanders" or "the red-heads" when we refer to other people?

I am a woman, an artist, a mother, a cat owner, a disabled person, and I just happen to be partnered with a wonderful woman. What about that should be so repulsive that South Carolina, or any state for that matter, should be so afraid of me that they don't want to welcome me to their state to spend my money, mingle with their citizens, and maybe paint a landscape or two of their beautiful scenery while I am there? I bathe, brush my teeth and regularly launder my clothes. I don't litter, smoke, or drink to excess. I have a good driving record, so I won't be a burden when I drive through the state, nor will end up in their jails. I support their economies while I visit.

However, I will be hard-pressed to want to visit somewhere that the Governor literally pulls the welcome mat out from under me before I even have a chance to see any of the sights of the state. Too bad too, because I will be visiting North Carolina soon . . . guess I won't be driving much further south this trip!

James Louis Petigru a pre civil war Legislator once stated about South Carolina;

"South Carolina is too small for a republic, and too large to be an insane asylum."

I now see what Petigru said more than 140 years ago, is still applicable today.

I expect a gay couple might do fine in Hilton Head or some other especially touristy town. Other than that, forget it.

I agree, although I wouldn't be surprised if gays experience discomfort on Hilton Head, depending on where you are.

Hey, I'm white, straigh, female, and have a tiny nose stud--and I feel uncomfortable in SC. All those Republican yard and road signs!

Why do the Republican hacks always seem to "dwell" on things such as gays? It certainly is not because of their religion. Are they fixated on it? What does that say about their minds? Hmmmm.
