Conan

How old is John McCain? So old, the jokes about it are getting old.

So at a taping Friday night of NBC's "Late Night with Conan O'Brien," the host asked the Republican presidential candidate for some new material.

"We all agree on a take on you, which is your seniority," O'Brien said, as McCain, 71, pretended to fall asleep in his chair.

Speaking for all late night comedians, O'Brien said, "we're tired of this take on you," and asked the Arizona senator to give them some fresh material.

"Do you have a kooky uncle, do you have bad breath, webbed toes, anything?" O'Brien asked.

"All of the above," McCain answered before offering up alternative fodder.

"I was able to get shot down, intercept a surface-to-air missile with my plane," said the former Navy pilot and Vietnam War prisoner of war.

"People don't really laugh at that," O'Brien pointed out.

McCain got in some jokes of his own, poking fun at "the cable monsters," his new name for cable news networks.

McCain, who has already had one cable movie made about his life, was then subjected by O'Brien to a series of casting suggestions for another movie about his quest for the presidency and his current search for a running mate.

Playing McCain? Tim Conway. Playing one-time Republican rival Mitt Romney? "Any local weatherman," said O'Brien.

Watch clips from his appearance:

I've always admired John McCain's sense of humor. I think he's an okay person, and probably a good caretaker of his constituents. But for president? Not a chance. Too old, too close-minded, too beat down by his own party to make any decisions on his own. Just as Bob Dole became a comedian after he was defeated, I see the same happening to McCain. I wish him well in his retirement.

Well, I, for one, watch funny movies when I'm looking for a good chuckle. When I want good leadership, I look to the president (not this one). This country doesn't need another "good ol' boy", it needs someone to push us back in the right direction.

And for the record, and I believe someone else has stated this already, but Obama does have a good sense of humor. It's just the issues are SERIOUS, and deserve serious discussion and answers.

Was McCain trying say he's old and tired or just that no one can stay awake during Conan?

I am afraid McCain is confusing high school popularity with the seeking of a very serious office.
To have a sense of humor is one thing, to be the source of humor another.

I can't believe the comments that denigrate a candidate for having a sense of humor. Better to be human than a poster child with a script. If BO is elected hope he keeps his speech writers close at hand,

Oh, by the way, who is it that puts himself out front in town hall meetings that aren't scripted?

Town halls that are not scripted? What about seeded with people with known questions? What about handpicked townspeople that don't ask difficult questions.....(McCain = Bush)??

Just more Bush appearances.

If Obama could make fun of himself he would never cease to be amused.

McCain is living proof, as if Bush wasn't enough, that guys that you wouldn't mind having a few beers with should be elected to position of Official Resident Colorful Character At The Bar.

It's better if presidents are elected on slightly loftier criteria.

Progressives can laugh about this, derisively, but there are millions of Americans who see something like this and say "Hey, he's not such a bad guy after all. Maybe there are things in his policies that I can agree with, because I'd like a guy like that you be president."

And these same people look at Obama supporters and their rigid, dogmatic responses to humor about Obama, and they realize that he's nothing at all like McCain, and maybe there are things about his policies that they suddenly realize that they don't agree with.

We're about to pick a date for the country for the next 4 years. Looks? Fade. Slick message? People lie. Personality? The number one deciding factor when faced with a choice between two similar individuals.

Wake up, progressives. This suited mannequin that's the basis of the Obama campaign is going to lose millions of voters simply because he can't relax, joke around, and be seen as someone with even a shred of personality.

You are comparing McCain himself to Obama supporters to make a silly point. Obama is funny and if you have never seen him make a joke or laugh at himself then you are one of those low info voters that only listens to the pundits and believe everything they tell you. The MSM and his other critics like to say how he will lose votes because he won't eat a donut or act a fool. You guys are the ones talking down to voters. Here these guys are on FOX, CNN, etc. saying to these very same voters - The way to your heart is with beer and jokes - not actual substance because you are not educated enough to understand Obama's big words and don't really care about what the issues are. Whopper v. Big Mac that's what matters? right?

Yep. Last time the country voted for a President you could have a beer with...

Well...

We lost our country.

Could be that he'll even pretend to be president, as he's been doing while a senator?

I like McCain....having a beer with him would be a hoot (maybe even at hooters). Having him as POTUS would be a blend of Bush cluelessness on actual policy mixed in with genuine Reagan forgetfullness and sleepiness (the man is old and does not use the internets..kindergartners use the internets).
I'm glad gypsy and ohio are so well-represented here and gypsy I only get a penny per post since I'm not as articulate as some.

Almost as funny as the video showing Bush crawling around the Oval Office on his hand and knees looking for weapons of mass destruction. Can you even remotely imagine FDR, Truman or Eisenhower playing to crowds with such antics?
