Starbucks Closure List Revealed: Is Your Shop Toast?

Starbucks Corp. has named all 600 company-owned stores it plans to close in a bid to boost its business and weed out unprofitable locations.

The company announced 50 stores late last week, saying those stores would be closed by the end of July. Those include four stores in Alabama, seven in Minnesota and eight in California.

Now the gourmet coffee retailer is detailing all stores slated for closure. Including the eight other stores, California will now lose 88 stores with two each in Los Angeles and San Francisco, and 10 in San Diego.

Florida will lose 59 stores, including three each in Tampa and Palm Beach Gardens. Louisiana will lose 13 stores, nine of them in Baton Rouge.

The company announced earlier this month that it would close 600 company-owned stores in the U.S. starting in July and continuing through the first half of the next fiscal year. But Starbucks didn't say which locations would be shut down, until now.

The move to close the stores is a turnabout from Starbucks' aggressive expansion plans. But the company curtailed those plans as it saw traffic and its profits decline recently as the faltering economy has led some consumers to question their spending on pricey coffee.

why do you have to close the store on camp bowie!!!!!! i cant believe it!!! i am soooooo mad and the one in rogers cause my cousin lives rhere and she is really mad tooooooooo­!!!!!!!!!!­!!!!!! i am sooooo mad and i cant believe it and also the one on hulen cause those two are the closewst to me and soooooo i really need this and i love starbucks soooo much!!!!!!­!!!!!!!!!!­!!!!!!!

Oh, boo-hoo. I'll have a grande of the schadenfreude.

I never liked their over-roasted coffee or their ludicrous prices. I did not care for the impact of their trading practices on third world farmers and the environment, and the way they deliberately forced small local coffee shops out of business by "clustering" their stores in a target neighborhood. I really disliked their rubber-stamped characterless corporate ubiquity and their union-busting.

And the tipping point for me when I completely swore off spending another dime with them was when they made a corporate policy of not allowing anyone with political pamphlets in their stores during the 2004 election..­.is it possible to be any less true to the ethos of a coffee shop?

Never cared for Starbucks. I prefer an old-fashioned diner where I can sit and drink it out a porcelain cup and flirt with the "seen-it-a­ll-before" waitress while I read my paper in the morning. Y'all can have all that other pretentious falderal.

I totally understand Starbuck's necessary cut downs in the States. Starbucks serves REAL coffee at a very reasonable price but what Americans want is foremost quantity almost for free and not quality. On a recent extensive trip to the States and Canada I have noticed that a lot of Starbucks outlets are slow on business. The competition which serves "coffee" which mostly tastes like sawdust (for Europeans.­.) at lower prices are doing quite well. I also noticed that a lot of people, especially in the outskirts of cities use Starbucks as some sort of a community center to meet an chat but do not consume. A lot of them where asking for a cup of ice water for free...?! Starbucks ist doing very well abroad especially in Europe where prices are at least double from the States.

So again I totally understand Starbucks' cut's of unprofitable "community centers" and at the same time expanding abroad where people ar willing to pay much more for very good coffee. Starbucks should actually rise prices substantially in the States to partially compensate for much higher commodity and energy prices!

It has always been amazing to me that US citizens will fight to pay $5.00 for a 10oz cup of joe (that I once got free with a meal) but get all pissy about paying 35 cents for 10 ozs of gas. (which is what it costs today.

I wonder if Lexus and BMW now have installed cup-holders which will only accomidate Starbucks cups.

I complain about gas, but my Starbuck's just remodeled. As an Oregonian, I can't live without my Starbucks. I know the 20th and Division store, got a lot of flack from the neighborhood coffee shops.
They're very non corporate around there, so they'll be happy to see them close.

Well I guess 5 stores in a 5 mile radius wasn't such a good thing. I can understand closing 2 of them, but I don't understand why they bothered to build them only to close in 5 months. I'm glad that the best 2 are down the street from my house and they're NOT closing! Woohoo! I can go on with my iced vanilla white mocha addiction in peace. Love it!

I see that someone mentioned anti-capitalists should be happy to see Starbucks drop so many stores. Capitalism, in it's true form, has never been practiced in this country. The government bails out and provides welfare checks to too many corporatio­ns/busines­ses for capitalism to be really practiced here. The govenment also passes so many laws to favor business; capitalism does not exist in a country where the government provides a risk/reward net for businesses through laws. The only anti-capitalists I read about or see are those who constantly talk on CNBC and Bloomberg trying to convince everyone that companies like Bear Stearns should get bailed out with taxpayer dollars instead of taking their knocks for taking unreasonable risks and closing the business down.

My guess is the majority of us would love capitalism if businesses took their knocks, when it occurs, as well as reap their profits, which seems to be only part of capitalism that businesses want to practice in this country.

We have 70+ hand written (some very heart warming) letters addressed to Howard Schultz that will be delivered Monday morning to Starbucks corporate. One of which is a mother of triplets who came into the store after the birth with the babies and a total stranger gave her a $50 gift card and said "your going to need this". We also have a online petition with numerous signatures and comments.

We are not sure why our Starbucks made the list, because it does not fit the criteria. It truly is a store like no other, our store #6262 is what Howard Schultz envisioned when he founded Starbucks. It is the “Third Place” for adults to network and to socialize, a place for entrepreneurs and small business owners to meet and do business, a place for parents to come with their kids and use the art supplies in the art closet we (regular customers) created, artists and writers exchange ideas here, and it has become THE neighborhood meeting place of neighborhood residents in the heart of our city.

I'm kinda glad I gave up coffee a few months ago, thus my personal desire and routine of stopping at a Starbucks on the way to work is not longer an issue, but I think it s*cks big time that due to the lack of sight and projection that the company completely overbuilt and overextended themselves, resulting in these closures and the loss of jobs.

When Starbucks started opening counters inside of grocery stores in strip malls that had a stand-alone store literally yards away, that was the beginning of the end. Who really thought this was going to last and that it was a good idea to begin with? This is just one of the things contributing to the inevitable closures, but how dumb did the Starbucks execs think the public, American or overseas, were?

Really. though, didn't we *all* see this coming? It's like a total "told ya so!"

The rest of the world, particularly here in Europe, we have excellent cafe in the morning at a reasonable price. I brew my own espresso each day, cheaply.

I live in the UK and I have to admit I've only be in Starbucks a couple of times as I just think the coffee is just too expensive. On both occasions that I've been in, the coffee seemed highly overpriced and didn't taste very nice compared to the excellent small place a bit further down the street that did (and still does) great coffee and decent sandwiches as well!

It's just a guess, but it appears that Starbucks overbuilt or expanded to fast on what had to have been poor demographics and market research. I suspect they also received easy cheap money from financiers or banks. We may not have heard the other shoe drop yet on this story I'm surprised this article doesn't mention Starbucks franchises. Perhaps there are none with the chain being entirely corporate owned and operated.

They're closing both stores at the Town Center Mall here in Sanford Florida. They had one on the top floor and another just below it. I never understood that arrangement. It seems there was nothing to understand afterall.

I really think that this Starbucks was some kind of shell game scam and soon we'll here who's left holding the bag. Uh, Empty bag at that. LOL
