Rachel Maddow

Yesterday the NYT profiled Rachel Maddow, recent MSNBC stalwart and Keith Olbermann fill-in, and addressed the long-held rumor that a Maddow show was in the offing. here's what just-promoted MSNBC President Phil Griffin told the NYT's Jacques Steinberg:

"At some point, I don't know when, she should have a show," said Phil Griffin, hours before he was promoted on Wednesday to president of MSNBC. "She's on the short list. It's a very short list. She's at the top."

At the moment every slot at night on MSNBC is taken, with David Gregory at 6 handing off to Chris Matthews at 7, and with Dan Abrams at 9 following Mr. Olbermann at 8. But some shuffling could be in the offing; Mr. Matthews's contract, for example, is up next year.

Every slot at night on MSNBC may be taken, but every slot is not. There's one slot no one is talking about, and it's been vacant for a month: The Tim Russert Show, on Saturdays at noon.

It's nowhere near Meet The Press in significance or ratings, but it was appointment viewing for many during the one slow newsday of the media week, an oasis in a lineup of prison docs and true crime stories. ("Mind of Manson" must do well because I've seen that one quite a bit.) That timeslot (plus that of its weekend repeats) has not yet been spoken for.

Yes, we know, the doc blocks do well (congratulations, Contessa!). But apart from the morning news blocks, "The Place For Politics" is a politics-free zone over the weekend (MTP rerun excepted). And there is an audience that is still out there waiting — waiting to see what becomes of that vacancy, waiting for the return of a chatty weekend political talk show, and yes, waiting to see a show helmed by Maddow.

True, Matthews' contract is up next year (though I personally hope he stays, since I like his show, and I like him), and I suppose Maddow could fill in one of the Harball slots, but why introduce a new show right now — especially since the most recently-added show, Race For The White House, is the lowest-ranked of MSNBC's primetime lineup? Ditto the Countdown repeat at 10 (which Steinberg deftly avoids mentioning in his write up) — they free up that slot for Maddow, maybe giving it a built-in advantage by having Olbermann throw to Maddow a la Stewart and Colbert, and moving Verdict to 10 p.m. (leaving Dan Abrams to match legal wits with Greta Van Susteren on one side and dimples with Anderson Cooper on the other).

But again, why? Countdown is the highest-rated show on the network, with the most rabid fan base (check out Daily Kos if you doubt), and reruns don't require an entire new production staff. Verdict is doing better in its timeslot than anything MSNBC has ever run there, and was the network's second-highest rated show last month. Much has been made recently of MSNBC's finally-winning formula (cf. Phil Griffin: "It's our time") — so why shake things up again now?

No, the weekend is the perfect spot for Maddow, a great place to consolidate the audience that has learned to love her during primary nights and her guest spots across the rest of the dial. MSNBC's audience has had the chance to get to know Maddow so far; why wouldn't they follow her to the weekend? Especially if NBC/MSNBC network talent chips in to make it work (as she has done — especially on those hat-trick nights when she'd start on Race and go straight through Verdict). That goes double for Olbermann, who could bring a little cross-promotional synergy as a guest panelist (though that would take things that much further away from Russert's show, obviously.)

The point is, if they really do want to give Maddow a show, this is the opening — and the timing will never be better, during this careening campaign season with its swollen audience and swarms of bloggers hyper-attuned to every move the cablers make. If they want to replace Russert's show, if they want to up the politics quotient on the weekend — this is a good first step. Mind of Maddow? A definite improvement.

p.s. Soup Cans notes the oddness of the NYT photos by Bess Greenberg, which don't show Maddow directly, instead showing her from the back and/or covered up by an Olbermann mask (scary!) and/or at a bit of distance in the makeup room and the studio. When the photos — four of them — are taken as a whole, it becomes apparent that Greenberg is playing with images as projected on different surfaces from different angles — I draw your attention to the artistry of the wide-shot photo, showing Maddow in the MSNBC makeup room mirror, and in the mirror of an open compact on the counter, and to the studio long-shot of her at the Countown desk juxtaposed with an image of her face on the monitor in the foreground. Both are reprinted below. It's the little things.

p.p.s. If you say it really fast, "The Place For Politics" sorta sounds like "The Place For Prison Docs."

p.p.p.s. Is that Jonathan Alter awaiting his turn to be primped and powdered? I think so!

MSNBC needs to dump all the prison stuff. The minute the prison shows start, I switch to CNN, and I'd bet there are millions who do the same.
05:32 PM on 07/23/2008
Yeah! . . . MSNBC should stop all that prison stuff. Prison crap is almost their logo now. . . . It is so sickening, hours and hours of horrible, uncivilized people, fighting and killing their way through life.
I cannot change channels fast enough, It turns my stomach just to skim the channels and
run across that level of society that should all be living under a rock somewhere.

I like Rachel. She is fair and should have her own show. It would be very refreshing to start the morning with Rachel. I would say shorten Joe's show an hours since he is predictable, sorry Joe. Or scrap the Prison stuff. We always turn away from MSNBC when the prison stuff comes. She is great and the public love her.

I really like Rachel for her no BS approach. He points are relevent and insightful. She can also be professionally tough. I'm tired of the cable screamers or the cable lapdogs. Give me Rachel!

Remove Dan Abrams and there is her slot. Agreed the Caught on Tape and Prison shows MUST GO!!!! Or at least show the repeat of Hardball and Race to the White House.

I think Ms. M should get an evening version of Morning Joe's format. I love the format of his show though I CAN'T STAND JOE.

Ms. M, John Ridley and/or Tiki Barber as her co-host. I think Tiki is a Republican so it would be a good balance for her.

Ms. Maddow has proven herself to be very popular with her viewing and listening audiences for some time now. If MSNBC, showing infinate wisdom in giving David ("Rap Dancer") Gregory his own lame program, continues to stall Maddow's advancement I should think she might search out more hospitable employers.

Maddow garners enormous respect with viewers because she does not talk down to them, and she does not inject her ego into the stories and make it all about her. Both Olbermann and Matthews are so involved with themselves that often their questions to guests meander into long commentaries. Matthews especially exhibits the annoying dynamic of not listening to his guests; while they're talking he is formulating his followup question to conform to his preconceptions and biases and rudely interjects this while the guest is about to make his point, like he dismisses the point before it is made. Highly irritating and disrespectful to the audience (and the guest).

Dr. Maddow, by contrast, always exhits respect (even when Joe Scarborough is denouncing her) and has me going to the dictionary often--not from being pompous--thereby bettering not only my layman's understanding of politics but my vocabulary.

Perhaps this issue could be resolved by inserting Maddow in a new show and cutting back (or eliminating) all their, "Let's be in prison" programming.

It's gratifying that the execs realize what a lot of us have known all along. Maddow is the smartest and sanest talking head out there.

Brokaw is only the temporary host of MTP, so that slot needs to be filled. If Matthews or Gregory gets MTP, that opens a slot for Maddow.

Remember, you read that here first.

I know she is, for all intents and purposes, new at TV hosting, but her smarts and level headedness would make her GREAT at MTP.

Absolutely! This is why god made TiVo. The other thought that makes sense to me is giving her one of Hardball's slots. Reruns an hour later...why? Rachel is sharp as a tack and seldom buys-into the absurd "big lie" memes accepted by most of the MSM (e.g., being a POW is a positive qualifier for public office or Obama needs to win the majority of southern racist voters.)

This is funny. I wrote an email to MSNBC this morning telling them that they needed to give Maddow her own show, I even suggested that they take David Gregory off the air and replace him with a show by Maddow.

I also asked them why, since they say they are the "place for politics," they don't have any political shows on during the weekend. All they have on this weekend is Caught on Camera and their Lockup shows and those are all repeats. And this is on the weekend of one of the biggest political stories of this year, Obama overseas.

Concur. Maddow has more to offer than Gregory.

Wasn't it Mr. Gregory dancing to some silly rap song with Karl "I thumb my nose at the United State" Rove?
This guy is tool - give Maddow a show and she'll bring it.

MSNBC needs to omit all those prison docblocs. Why are they giving a forum to these macho, or macha, as it were, criminals to brag about their crimes and display their pathology, when there are brilliant, good people like Rachel Maddow, for instance, who could be presented during those timeslots. CNN is unwatchable because of their excess of commercials and obvious, though sneaky, rightwing bias. Faux noise isn't even an option, but MSNBC had potential with us until they blew it with docblox, ad nauseum. We check out Olberman when we can, otherwise they have joined the other two cable "news" outlets as not on our viewing schedule.

MSNBC needs Rachel to have her own show. Take away the Matthews rerun. I like Chris, but having Rachel on the second hour would be better. I don't care for David Gregory's show......all he talks about is Obama, Obama - but in a negative discussion. Nothing about McCain unless it has to do with Obama. Can't stand that Oppenheimer fellow. Also, what is with Dan Abrams not doing Friday nights, again. I wish MSNBC would become a news channel and get rid of all that Lock-up stuff. It makes them look unprofessional. And what's with Comcast moving MSNBC into the HD section - I wish they would put it back with the other news channels. I guess they are another republican owned corporation.

Sorry, not everyone shares your view on Matthews. (I personally wish he would go away - I like my political shows well-informed, not hyper. See "Fareed Zakaria on CNN - Sunday!)

However............... I do very much share your view on Rachel Maddow. Can't get enough. Smart, funny, almost Keith!

You actually have manged to tune into CNN and find programming hidden between all those commercials? Wow, and here I thought they'd gone paid programming (ads) 24/7.
12:34 AM on 07/20/2008
Fully agree about Matthews. Other than the comedy news shows I had only been watching Countdown for many, many months now. After watching Obama and Fareed Zakaria's new show I've added that. So now I've got a daily news show and a weekly one.

I like the proposal for Ms. Maddow for her to be on a Saturday political program, to continue being a fill in for KO on Countdown and as a commentor on various MSNBC programs. She is intellegent, can think well on her feet, makes a pleasnat and professional appeance and is well qualified with her radio experience and education.
Besides the other reasons given, she would finally bring in a sound, left of center female, as well as a lesbian into the inner circle of political commentaors. That is a badly needed balance to the right wing bimbos on Fox News.
