SAN DIEGO — The creator of "X-Men" bumped into Wolverine at Comic-Con.

After happy introductions between Stan Lee and Hugh Jackman, the actor announced that Lee would make a cameo in the upcoming 20th Century Fox movie "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," due out next May.

"Don't tell anyone," Jackman joked about the accidental announcement. "It's always a big shock when people see him."

"I promise not to try and overshadow you," Lee said.

Jackman, who made an unannounced appearance Thursday at the convention to tout "Wolverine," later said that he and Lee had met before, at the opening of the first "X-Men" movie in 2000.

"I don't know if he remembers," said Jackman, who went on to praise the 85-year-old comic-book king.

"Around here this guy is like a god," Jackman said. "Around here, people see this guy, they faint. Their whole livelihood and everything they're interested in came out of his mind."

One character Lee didn't create, Jackman added, was Wolverine.

But there is always room for more superheroes on screen, Lee said. The success of superhero flicks will continue to inspire new and better big-screen stories, he said.

"You could tell having seen 'Iron Man,' having seen `Batman,' the writers and producers and directors now know how to treat these movies," he said. "They're not just silly stories of people wearing capes hitting a bad guy. They have more dimension to them."

" ... It's like gangster movies," he said. "There will never be an end to crime stories. There will never be an end, I think, to superhero stories. They'll just evolve, they'll be done in different ways and I think they'll keep getting better and better."

Those appearances are always fun, and Iron Man was the best yet, but check out Princess Diaries 2. That blew me away. Not only was it not a Marvel movie, but he was playing a part! And he was funny! Stan IS da Man!

Well, duh. Just like he has in every Marvel movie ever made!

"One character Lee didn't create, Jackman added, was Wolverine."

One other character Stan Lee didn't create: Spider-Man. Mister Fantastic. Invisible Girl. The Thing. The Human Torch. Thor. Doctor Strange. Captain America. Silver Surfer. Ant-Man. Cyclops. Marvel Girl. Ice Man. Angel. Beast.

Oh, wait. That's more than one.

Umm, do you know something I don't, buddydave? Stan Lee has always been credited as co-creator of Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, X-Men, Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Daredevil, Dr Strange and many others ... In fact, most of the characters on your list, except for Silver Surfer (Jack Kirby's alone as I recall). So what is it you're trying to say here?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:18 AM on 07/26/2008

that HE created all of those comic heroes! aren't you LISTENING?!?!?

Are you saying that Ditko and Kirby created those characters with no input from Lee? That he did not write the first 10 to 20 issues?

I think you would be in error there.

BTW, Capt. American was created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby.....Lee has not claimed he created that one.

Woah! No way is Stan Lee going to be in one of the movies based on a Marvel Comic Book he helped to create. That'd be crazy!!

Dude, Stan Lee is in virtually every Marvel movie. How is that news? He's like the Spike Lee of comic books.

Better? Get Better? How can anyone top Spiderman 2, the X-Men, and the Dark Knight? The Dark Knight raised the bar so high it'll be centuries before anyone can improve on a superhero movie.

I guess you can tell I like these films.

Watchmen may just move the bar higher.

Agreed. There's a 0.001% chance that Wolverine will be better than Iron Man or The Dark Knight.

The only chance would be a faithful yet visionary adaptation of Barry Windsor-Smith's Weapon X.

I'm sure it will be better than Fantastic Four 2. That won't be too hard, though.

Whomever assigned this "Sandy Cohen" to do this story obviously assigned someone who doesn't know much about either comics or superhero movies.
Why?
Because Stan Lee making a cameo appearance in a superhero movie based upon one of Marvel's characters isn't news. Lee has appeared in a cameo in each of the three Spiderman movies, all of the Fantastic Four movies, the Hulk movie, the DareDevil movie, and two of the X-Men movies.
Do your homework, Sandy...or was it a slow news day?

When is it ever a surprise? I like Lee's cameos but they're hardly a surise when I see them

Yeah, we can't wait for the 'Ant-man' movie . . .

Stan Lee is a wonderful guy. Thanks for decades of uniquely American entertainment, Stan.

I like Hugh Jackman, seems like a real down-to-Earth guy. Nice to see he knows his comic book history, down to the fact that he mentioned Stan didn't create Wolverine. Two gents by the names of Len Wein and Herb Trimpe did, and hopefully, they will be credited in Hugh's movie.

Hmmm ... I guess the reporter didn't catch Jackman's sarcasm about the "big shock". Stan Lee has a cameo in every Marvel Comics-related movie. It's pretty much a tradition, and this is not news.

You're right--I'm not much of a comics reader, but I did see all three X-Men movies, and looking for Stan Lee's cameo is somewhat similar to looking for Alfred Hitchcock's cameo in HIS movies! Big Hugh Jackman fan here, so I'm looking forward to the Wolverine movie next year!
