There are even whispers starting whether Dark Knight can beat the incredible worldwide numbers posted by the all-time $1.8 billion benchmark of Titanic. "It can be the first movie that has a real shot," one rival studio bigwig told me cautiously. Because not only do people like the movie, but it's getting incredible repeat business. Even occasional moviegoers are curious to see what all the fuss is about.

Great movie , Excellent job by Ledger but, this movie is a horrible stain on the legacy of Batman.
First and foremost Batman is the "Worlds Greatest Detective"
Early in his career Batman used his skills to find the weak spot . He used disguises to infiltrate criminal gangs to destablize them, making one gang fight another and protecting the innocence as he did it. For years criminals thought the Batman was just a myth.
This Batman is a pompous jerk who thinks he can force criminals to do his bidding through fear and high tech weapons.
It will not be the top grossing movie of all time.

In order for a film to break these kinds of records, it takes huge numbers of audience members to see the film multiple times in the theaters. Dark Knight does not have the built in target audience of teenage and twentysomething girls who fantasize about a love so powerful that it trumps the threat of imminent death. Sure, it does have the comic book boys, but they aren't nearly the numbers that the lovelorn girls are. So I don"t see a way that this film can beat Titanic.

The mass reaction to Titanic was clear evidence of the infinite stupidity of the human race. "Dark Knight" is ever so slightly more intelligent a movie and hence it will not be touted as a scream by quite as many movie-going morons. And no, just because I hated something that was really popular it doesn't mean that I have bad taste. Remember the witch burnings? Those were real crowd-pullers too.

Everyone mentions Hannibal Lector but what about Javier Bardem as Anton Chigur(No Country For Old Men). I still have nightmares because of this guy.

I think Anton Chigur beats hannibal too.

Margaret Hamilton from The Wizard of Oz still gives me nightmares.

If I had a nickel for every movie that was going to out gross Titanic.......

Based on all the early indicators I can't see this movie out earning Titanic by making another $1.5 billion. It undersold Spider-man 3 on ticket sales on opening weekend, a fact most people seem to ignore.

And while I obviously can't speak for the rest of the world it seems unlikely that this movie will become the kind of huge international phenomenon that Titanic was. Fan-boys might being seeing this movie repeatedly in droves but there's no way they have the buying power of millions of screaming teenage girls that propelled Titanic to such heights.

But maybe I'm just a biased Titanic fan......

Oh, and it really is a shame that Heath Ledger is getting all this Oscar buzz and he isn't here to experience it. Especially since he should have won for Brokeback Mountain two years ago - now that was acting, he created a real and nuanced human being and was able to convey it all beautifully, even more impressive considering the thick accent and limited character dialogue.

Maybe this movie can help pay down our national debt.

Heath Ledger's "The Joker" is up there with Hannibal.
That was incredible how he made the pencil disappear!!!

There's no way it could out-gross Reanimator.

I preferred "Batman Begins," at least there was some character development. This film just seemed like a bunch of perfunctory action sequences interspersed with a meandering story line.

One point! I just want 1 freakin' point of the gross and I'll go away!

I do think the movie has been *slightly* overrated. Very, very good, but it would be impossible to live up to such an incredible amount of hype...
.... on the other hand, I have been going around all week, saying to people, "I'm just a dog chasing cars..."

CGI is always obvious. Everyone has to suspend disbelief when they see it. It's analogous to the flavor chemicals they put in fast food. Then you have the psychological politicization of the self from the vastly intrusive media mirror. The result is that everything is becoming a synthetic representation of itself. Inevitably there will be synthetic morality.

I don't know what all of you are talking about. I live in Chicago - they had people hanging off the IBM building, The chase sequence was filmed on lower wacker drive with the actual vehicles, they flipped the truck on LaSalle FOR REAL. I think you're assuming CGI when you are seeing live stunts. (Maybe cause it was so dark)

Agreed. Wait for Netflix.

Yeah there was SO much obvious CGI in this film.

/sarcasm

Some people just don't get it. It's a freaking comic book movie. And it's a fine one at that. Not to mention it's a great movie. Period.
