KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — An out-of-work truck driver accused of opening fire at a Unitarian church, killing two people, left behind a note suggesting that he targeted the congregation out of hatred for its liberal policies, including its acceptance of gays, authorities said Monday.

A four-page letter found in Jim D. Adkisson's small SUV indicated he intentionally targeted the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church because, the police chief said, "he hated the liberal movement" and was upset with "liberals in general as well as gays."

Adkisson, a 58-year-old truck driver on the verge of losing his food stamps, had 76 rounds with him when he entered the church and pulled a shotgun from a guitar case during a children's performance of the musical "Annie."

Adkisson's ex-wife once belonged to the church but hadn't attended in years, said Ted Jones, the congregation's president. Police investigators described Adkisson as a "stranger" to the congregation, and police spokesman Darrell DeBusk declined to comment on whether investigators think the ex-wife's link was a factor in the attack.

Adkisson remained jailed Monday on $1 million bond after being charged with one count of murder. More charges are expected. Four victims remained hospitalized, including two in critical condition.

The attack Sunday morning lasted only minutes. But the anger behind it may have been building for months, if not years.

"It appears that what brought him to this horrible event was his lack of being able to obtain a job, his frustration over that, and his stated hatred for the liberal movement," Police Chief Sterling Owen said.

Adkisson was a loner who hates "blacks, gays and anyone different from him," longtime acquaintance Carol Smallwood of Alice, Texas, told the Knoxville News Sentinel.

Authorities said Adkisson's criminal record consisted of only two drunken driving citations. But court records reviewed by The Associated Press show that his former wife obtained an order of protection in March 2000 while the two were still married and living in the Knoxville suburb of Powell.

The couple had been married for almost 10 years when Liza Alexander wrote in requesting the order that Adkisson threatened "to blow my brains out and then blow his own brains out." She told a judge that she was "in fear for my life and what he might do."

Calls to Alexander's home were not answered Monday, and the voice mailbox was full.

Monday night, an overflow crowd of more than 1,000 people attended a memorial service at the Second Presbyterian Church next door to the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church.

"We're here tonight to make sense of the senseless," the Rev. William Sinkford, president of the Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations, told the gathering.

In Adkisson's letter, which police have not released, "he indicated ... that he expected to be in there (the church) shooting people until the police arrived and that he fully expected to be killed by the responding police," Owen said. "He certainly intended to take a lot of casualties."

Witnesses said the attack was cut short after some church members tackled the gunman and held him until police arrived.

The Unitarian-Universalist church advocates for women's rights and gay rights and has provided sanctuary for political refugees. It also has fed the homeless and founded a chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union, according to its Web site.

Owen said authorities believe the suspect had gone to the Unitarian church because of "some publicity in the recent past regarding its liberal stance on things."

Owen did not identify the publicity, but the Rev. Chris Buice, the church's pastor, is a frequent contributor to the Knoxville newspaper.

"In the midst of political and religious controversy, I choose to love my neighbors as myself," Buice wrote in an op-ed piece published in March. "Ultimately, I believe that tolerance, compassion and respect are the qualities we need to keep Knoxville and East Tennessee beautiful."

A police affidavit used to get a search warrant for Adkisson's home said the suspect admitted to the shooting.

Adkisson "stated that he had targeted the church because of its liberal teachings and his belief that all liberals should be killed because they were ruining the country, and that he felt that the Democrats had tied his country's hands in the war on terror and they had ruined every institution in America with the aid of the major media outlets," Investigator Steve Still wrote.

Adkisson told authorities he had no next of kin or family. He lived about a 20-minute drive from the Unitarian church _ one of three in the Knoxville area. The church is in an established neighborhood of older, upscale homes and several other houses of worship near the University of Tennessee.

The police chief said the suspect bought the shotgun at a pawn shop about a month ago, and he wrote the letter in the last week or so. A .38-caliber handgun was found in his home.

About 200 people from throughout the community were watching 25 children performing "Annie" when the suspect entered the church, pulled out a semiautomatic shotgun and fired three fatal blasts.

Church member Barbara Kemper said the gunman shouted "hateful words" before he opened fire, but police investigators said other witnesses didn't recall him saying anything.

A burly usher, 60-year-old Greg McKendry, was hailed as a hero for shielding others from gunfire as other church members rushed to wrestle the gunman to the ground. Police arrived at 10:21 a.m., three minutes after getting the 911 call and arrested Adkisson.

No children were hurt, but eight people were shot, including the two who died _ McKendry and Linda Kraeger, 61.

When the first shot rang out at the rear of the sanctuary, many church members thought it might be part of the play or a glitch in the public address system. Some laughed before turning around to see the shooter and his first victims covered in blood.

Jamie Parkey crawled under the pews with his daughter and mother when the second and third shots were fired. He saw several men rush the suspect.

"I jumped up to join them," he told AP Television News. "When I got there, they were already wrestling with him. The gun was in the air. Somebody grabbed the gun and we just kind of dog-piled him to the floor. I knew a police suppression hold, and I sat on him until police came."

Parkey's wife, Amy Broyles, was visiting the church to see her daughter in the play. She said Adkisson "was a man who was hurt in the world and feeling that nothing was going his way," she said. "He turned the gun on people who were mostly likely to treat him lovingly and compassionately and be the ones to help someone in that situation."

Investigators were reviewing several video recordings of the performance by parents and church members. Owen said police would not release the videos or Adkisson's letter until they have been analyzed for evidence.

Adkisson, who faces his next court hearing Aug. 5, was on active duty with the Army beginning in 1974. Army records show he was a helicopter repairman, rising from a private to specialist and then returning to private before being discharged in late 1977.

this man was an atheist hostile to Christianity and Bible study,
He targeted this church because his ex-wife belonged to it.
He was in a rage because he had just lost his food stanps.
The media should stop exploiting this tragedy.

Joe Jones do have any sources for this information.
Since when is senless violence and answer to hunger if it is true that he lost his food stamps. Maybe he can take one of those jobs "Americans" don't want to do to earn some money.

Thank you so much, Joe Jones. It was my sister who was murdered. The shooter was, indeed, a man who hated Christianity. His neighbor reported that. He had earlier threatened to kill his wife and then commit suicide and she got a restraining order for him. In spite of this, he was able to walk into a pawn shop and buy a gun. He got 75 bullets and planned to keep shooting until the police killed him. There were some brave people who took him down even though they were unarmed. The child my sister was helping raise was covered in my sister's blood. The child's mother has a bullet in her brain and her hands are shattered. My sister invited my daughter, her husband, and my grandchild to go with her that morning because her neice was in the play. If they hadn't had company show up, they would have been sitting beside her and may have been shot.

I find the media has been quite fair. It's the bloggers who are exploiting our tragedy. I appreciate you for getting the facts straight and not turning it into a liberal vs conservative food fight.

This nation was formed and it prospered because of violence. Sure, millions of folks have gone to school and read that the songs sang by the slaves was because they were happy. But, within this pathetic and simplistic view of this American institution, we discover that the slaves were not singing because they were happy, they were singing to alert other slaves, abolitionists and freed men about the movement of slaves along the Underground Railroad. But, in the published nonsense that has passed as historical reference in tens of thousands of schools, children begin their lives playing a part of a steady diet of lies, distortions and mis-truths; which oddly assists them in swallowing the more deadly lies once they become adults.

The ole adage of 'live by the sword, die by the sword' is apt in understanding the complex nature of America, which coddles 'goodness' as its own; while using violence to cement its social, political and economic locks.

It never seems to be the liberal side trying to kill conservatives, why is that??? Do you think that the nuts on the right have all that rabble rousing rhetoric to listen to, all those hate mongers feeding their paranoia as well as probably limited brain resources to begin with, at least limited compassion or empathy. Why does killing satisfy these anti abortion, anti liberal, anti black, anti everything gun toting imbeciles more than it does the more left thinking population??? There certainly is a concentration of violence and hate on the right. We are growing and nurturing our own terrorists, and arming them too.

And those fools like Limbaugh, Hannitty, O Reilly, Coulter and Savage who have made a career and their fortunes demonizing Liberals will accept NO Responsibility for their actions

Here is your payoff. A fool who believed their nonsense.

Amazing. Hating people because they tolerate people who are different from them.

Sounds like the Republican agenda to me.

This is the real result of selling hate, and those who pay Limbaugh and Hannity to spew this nonsense are just as responsible for the Adkissons as they, who are the types who buy-in on this daily menu of intolerance. Adkisson is clearly responsible for these murders and injuries which occurred in TN, but he is but a symptom of the larger picture of radio hate mongers who pump these folks full of falsehoods and thus profit off of their buying habits.

Again, the corporate media will wallow in its cowardice, as it fails to look at the element of white racism and prejudice which drives someone to commit such a horrendous crime; placing this matter in an individual case-by-case catorgory is how they rationalize not dealing with the millions more of these same types who walk about talking about supporting the Constitution while ignoring the parts that disagree with their hatreds.

The photograph of Mr.Adkisson as he was taken into custody was troubling. Not rage on his face, but suppressed anger, perhaps, and confusion. I have seen pictures of captured large dogs that had been involved in maulings that seemed to have the same kind of a disturbed appearance. In the case of the dogs, while we recognize them as dangerous animals, we are often asked what kind of mistreatment or negligence could have allowed something so terrible to happen. Perhaps we should ask the same thing here. What is most frightening is I would bet that Mr. Adkisson considers himself to be a Christian.

Why is it frightening that Mr. Adkisson considers himself a Christian? This is typical behavior from somebody who believes in a sadistic and tyrannical higher power.

The sad part is that Mr. Adkisson would have wanted you dead because you have compassion. However to answer your question. I would have to say that our society has mistreated Mr. Adkisson along with everyone else

This shooting is the direct result of vast areas of middle america being controlled by Right Wing Talk Radio. One can drive for days and never hear a progressive viewpoint on the am dial. Defanging this monopoly has to be first on the agenda, that is if we get a chance to form an agenda.

Obama sure was out of line in his "cling to guns" assessment of those who feel helpless as there is absolutely no evidence to support it.

The agenda of the corporate media is not to challenge the beliefs and views of white Americans, it is to confirm it and project it and re-inforce it; and this is precisely why latent racism is rarely if ever dealt with in a manner that does not favor the opinions and beliefs of some whites who believe it is a product of the paranoid 'black mind'. The rise of Affirmative Action on many states ballot is a kind of subtle nudge to whites to signal to them that perhaps Obama will bring policies that will give blacks an edge over them; so operatives work to get the signatures needed to get this on the ballot at the same time the first black is just so happening to run for President. Nevermind, that AA favors white women more than all others, for millions of folks AA is ingrained as a give-away to blacks.

Failure to challenge the obvious glitches in American society as a whole is the reason that the 'status quo' exists, it is clearly the result of not challenging the norms and assumptions believed to be true---so they naturally continue to exist and stand unmoved. And, until some sane mature white leadership stands as a challenge to those who push these lies and half-truths daily in their rants, they will continue to produce rampant ignorance and prejudice.

Well, to be fair, the assasins of JFK, John Lennon, and failed Reagan assasin John Hinkley all carried around copies of "Catcher in the Rye" with them and cited it as part of the inspiration for their deeds.

It may seem obvious what certain writings are "dangerous," but at the end of the day you really never know what might set people off.

When the Republicans say that an Obama victory in November will make America less safe and invite terrorists to set up shop, this is what they mean. Remember the terrorism of the Clinton years? Timothy McVeigh protesting Waco and Ruby Ridge by blowing up men, women, children and babies in OK City. Eric Rudolph voicing his disapproval of abortion by setting off a bomb in Atlanta during the Olympics that killed a woman. The countless abortion clinic bombings and murders of doctors. Yes, it Obama is our next president we will see our very own home-grown terrorists back in business. Pathetic little people who blame every problem they face and this country faces on liberals. Gee, I wonder why he couldn't get a job. And meanwhile, the multimillion dollar pundits, the Rush O'Hannity syndicate, continue to reap the harvest of hatred that their drooling listeners provide to make these worthless men so very powerful. That "cowardly liberal" who stood in front of this maniac to protect others had more courage in his little finger than Rush, Sean, and Billy have ever possessed and can ever hope to possess. I won't even bring up the Michael "Autism's a scam" Savage and Anne "Joe McCarthy was a saint" Coulter. Oops, I just did. They're so hard to ignore.

Well said wing! I could not agree more with your theory. I too would lay most of the blame at the feet of un-American, home-grown terrorist enablers like Limbaugh, O'Reilly, and Hannity. Of course they'll say they have no part in this "neo-con gone wild" but we know the truth.

We should all keep a good thought for the family of Greg McKendry who's selfless act to protect others cost him his life!

The idiot mantra "guns don't kill people" will soon appear.

As long as the NRA remains one of the most powerful lobbies in the country, these incidents will happen again and again. I know you are behind on many issues concerning a modern, human society. But for the sake of your children: Stop this mindless gun worshipping from the stone age and try to join the circle of educated, civilized countries. Maybe it will take a few generations, but you have to start sometime. Change you can believe in.

He would not get even 30% if he didn't say that.

Still it doesn't mean you are "freer" than the rest of the civilized world just because you can go about and easily kill each other. Why are people outside the USA protected better than you ? Why don't we need guns to "defend" ourselves or our property ? Why are young black kids rather dying of a gun wound instead of a desease ? Why is your society so much more violent than comparable countries ?

As much as this story can stir up anger against the right wing, let's try and keep the victims in mind more than the perpetrator. We all know what he stands for, let's not forget what that church stands for, and the victims.

Tolerance, acceptance, love, for ALL peoples, gay and straight, Christian and non Christian. The unitarians are a truly modern church who aren't shackled by antiquarian ideas of supremacy over others for their religious or sexual persuasion. Who follow Christ and follow the Bible, just not blindly.

They can remind us that not all Christians are Jerry Falwell, spewing fear, hate, and damnation. That there are indeed Christians who are true to Christ's message of love and peace.

Just for accuracies sake, many Unitarian Universalists are not Christians. There are people of every denomination and no denomination represented in the Unitarian congregations. That's a real testament to their tolerance and acceptance. There is no creed you have to follow or swear to believe.

Just a clarification, UUs are accepting of all faiths and do not follow one prescribed religion. We have buddhist UUs, christian UUs, agnostic UUs, athiest UUs, Wiccan UUs, and just about every other faith you can think of. We are held together by the belief that all people are inherently good and equal and the right to find truth and meaning, however we define it. It is truly a wonderful faith to grow up in, but it's trying at times like these to keep those tenets in mind. I can only imagine what the congregation at TVUUC are going through, my prayers are with them.

It seems like it's usually rightwing nuts that are always killing people - the gun-toting ones at that. Too bad we make guns so easily available to people like this killer - it's the shame of America. Let's first remember the victims and then consider who or what enabled the killer. The gun-loving politicians, the NRA, the hate radio hosts - share the blame along with the killer that pulled the trigger.

So Ted Kaczynsky and Charles Manson's actions are the fault of liberalism? I'm not disregarding the notion that many right-wingers are ignorant and hateful, certainly many of them are, but most people are ignorant and hateful. Human nature is abject.

"The life of man, solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short." - Thomas Hobbes

Anyone that thinks the government, our awful government, should have guns, yet people of good will should not be allowed guns, isn't a liberal. This guy could've ran in that church with a butcher knife or meat cleaver and killed two people if his aim was good and his arm was strong. Let's rid our nation of butcher knives and meat cleavers.
