The list is totally bogus because it doesn't define the term party. Is a party school one with lots of booze and drugs or lots of open sexuality? Having attended both small and large schools my sense is that the smaller schools always offer more opportunity for serious partying but then bashes with 500 drunk people were never my idea of partying. As a horny 20 year old, my number one priorty was sex not booze or drugs and making it was a comatose coed was something of a turn off. Two schools not on the list make me woinder about "the party criteria": Cal State University Chico and Bennington College. Both schools have well deserved reputations for radically different styles of partying. Someone stated that nerd schools are great for partying? That hasn't been my personal experience.

As an UF alumni I cannot confirm or deny this article. I had a four year long black out.

As a college student I don't understand why people get drunk to insane degrees.
I'm going to be in debt THOUSANDS of dollars, so I better do a better job in class and being hang over isn't going to help. It's one thing if the weekend or spring break, but to drink every night until drunk is just stupid. Just because you CAN ,doesn't mean YOU SHOULD.

Tell me again which school was the model for "Animal House" - DARTMOUTH, you dweebs! Those "nerd" schools are more party than you think. They just don't have to advertise it!

What??? Sorry dude, the president of your frat gave you some bad info. The movie was filmed at the University of Oregon, king of all party schools, for a reason.

I go to UF and as a gator I am proud of this title!

Once again, Tulane (#15) beats LSU! Only (for once) for all the wrong reasons.

Most of these schools are just very large state schools. Most all colleges, big and small have plenty of parties to attend. Yawn.

Florida is such a lame place, no matter what parties are going on there.

Don't be mad. I'm sure your community college has some qualities (affordability, near the mall - actually, IN the mall, etc.).
11:09 AM on 07/29/2008
There isn't a single school worth going to on that list. Unless, of course, all you want to do is drink and get high, but you could do that at home and save the tuition. The kids going to those schools are probably too stupid to realize that, though.
11:41 AM on 07/29/2008
As an intelligent lawyer who graduated from UF, I say: sorry, friend, you're wrong.
Don't be jealous because we had tons of fun WHILE learning, too.
11:56 AM on 07/29/2008
I'm sure there are some smart people at UF who wound up going to a school not worthy of them. Compare the party school list with this list of "sober" schools provided by Doofus:

the top 20 "stone-cold sober schools,"
according to Princeton Review's survey
(some of which you may have heard of)

1. Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah.
2. Wheaton College, Wheaton, Ill.
3. U.S. Coast Guard Academy, New London, Conn.
4. College of the Ozarks, Point Lockout, Mo.
5. Grove City College, Grove City, Pa.
6. U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colo.
7. U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Md.
8. Wellesley College, Wellesley, Mass.
9. Thomas Aquinas College, Santa Paula, Calif.
10. Calvin College, Grand Rapids, Mich.
11. U.S. Military Academy, West Point, N.Y.
12. Wesleyan College, Macon, Ga.
13. Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering, Needham, Mass.
14. City University of New York-Queens College, Flushing, N.Y.
15. Webb Institute, Glen Cove, N.Y.
16. Berea College, Berea, Ky.
17. Agnes Scott College, Decatur, Ga.
18. City University of New York-Baruch College, New York.
19. Simmons College, Boston.
20. Bryn Mawr College, Bryn Mawr, Pa

See any difference?

Did the school you go to offer a degree in ignorance? Because that's what you seem to have majored in. There are quite a few excellent schools on that list, depending on what you want to major in. Only someone as stupid as you claim kids going to these schools to be would say the University of Illinois isn't worth going to.
05:22 PM on 07/29/2008
Could you rephrase that last sentence in English?
09:50 AM on 07/29/2008
How depressing must it be for everyone else to know that UF is not only one of the country's premier academic institutions, but it is also the most fun.

Go Gators!

Why do people insist on confusing big athletics with academic superiority?

Florida and Notre Dame are two schools who have completely undeserved reputations as "good (academic) schools" solely because of their huge emphasis on big name athletics and alumni cheerleading.

University of Rochester, University of Chicago, Johns Hopkins, Georgetown... now THERE are legitimate academic reputations. As long as the majority of people in this country continue to be snowed by the hype of schools like UF and Notre Dame, mediocrity will reign. Skim milk masquerading as cream -- and being affirmed at every juncture... P.T.Barnum would be SO proud!
11:45 AM on 07/29/2008
Actually, no, UF is not in the same category as those three schools (but University of Rochester, yes; who the hell goes there?), but I don't think anyone is asserting that they are. UF is a good PUBLIC university, with a good education, and one can get that education while having a GREAT time and watching amazing athletes of all types.
UF has a top 50 law school, a great med school, and tons of great graduate programs, as well as outstanding undergraduate programs, all for a fraction of what Georgetown costs.

Bingo. Couldn't agree more.

As I stated yesterday, this is proof positive of what a UF education will get you. Why are you blogging at 9:50 AM?

Oh yeah, when mom and dad [who are probably working a little overtime for sonny or girlie] see this they will be proud.

Only if they are Puritanical fascists who think having fun is the devil's work.

You can have fun and work hard. Look at the Dutch. They probably party more than any other country on the planet and they are STILL renowned for their work ethic and for being one of the most productive nations in the world.

I went to UF. We hit the books, then hit the clubs. You can do both. You don't have to be miserable and bored in order to be successful. I'm very sorry for you if you've lived your life otherwise because you don't think that's true.

Well I remember when the list first came out with an asterisk beside the #1 to explain, by footnote, that the University of South Carolina was not listed because this was purely a listing of AMATEUR institutions, USC being a professional party school with no other known purpose or common experience.
11:09 PM on 07/28/2008
San Diego State? Where art thou? A great party school in the 80s and 90s.

I was surprised to see Penn State and University of Texas, Those are good schools.

I was puzzled by the absence of San Diego State as well. Maybe they have taken a hint from their more serious UC San Diego counterpart.

Oh, and what about Cal State Chico? It was an infamous party school of long standing.

I'm also surprised that USC (University of Southern California) didn't show up. It's basically for rich kids who can't read and who want to network with other upper class twits.

Other surprises are the absences of the University of Nebraska and the University of Oklahoma, who both seem to exist as an excuse to have football teams in their states.
08:12 AM on 07/29/2008
Things have changed drastically at Chico State in the past twenty years. Back when Playboy named it the top party school every drunken idiot in northern Cali showed up for Pioneer Days ( one of the major Greek functions) and there was massive rioting. After that Pioneer Days was permanetly cancelled. That really was the beginning of the end of Chico State's hard partying days. The school has tried very hard to change it's image since then and it has for the most part been successful. But it sure was fun while it lasted!

Speaking for Penn State, there's not much to do other then drink in the middle of Pennsylvania.

They really make too much out of these "polls". I've met some truly brilliant people that attended "degree factories" and I have seen some insane behavior from students at small private schools including mini ivy league schools. It's not where you attend, but what you make of it that matters.

Look at our current President and Secretary of State. They attended some very prestigious schools, yet look at the results.
