WASHINGTON — Barack Obama told House Democrats on Tuesday that as president he would order his attorney general to scour White House executive orders and expunge any that "trample on liberty," several lawmakers said.

Presidents, as head of the executive branch of government, issue such orders to direct operations of executive branch agencies, like the Justice Department and the CIA. For example, President Bush used an executive order last year to breathe new life into the CIA's controversial terror interrogation program that allowed harsh questioning of suspects.

Obama "talked about how his attorney general is to review every executive order and immediately eliminate those that trample on liberty," said Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y.

"He indicated there would be a review in his administration," said Rep. James Clyburn, D-S.C., the House majority whip.

Obama did not mention executive orders when he addressed reporters who waited for him outside the closed-door meeting. He said only that he would be campaigning alongside members to win the presidency and help expand Democratic majorities in the House and Senate.

"I am looking forward to collaborating with everyone here to win the election, but more importantly to collaborate with everybody here and also some like-minded Republicans to actually govern and to deliver on behalf of the American people," Obama said.

During his presidency, Bush increasingly has relied on executive orders to dictate policies without seeking congressional approval. His orders have ranged from restrictions on striped bass fishing to sanctions against Myanmar's government.

Obama did not indicate who his attorney general would be, or any other member of his Cabinet. To lawmakers who asked about his Cabinet plans, Obama said: "Get me elected, and then I'll worry about the Cabinet," according to Nadler.

Clyburn added that Obama said there were "people in the room with more expertise than him."

Obama's meeting with the House Democratic caucus came hours after he spoke with both Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke about the faltering economy, part of his effort to refocus the campaign on domestic issues after last week's foreign trip.

Obama spokesman Michael Ortiz said the senator and Bernanke discussed the outlook for consumers and businesses, as well as the effect of rising home foreclosures on families nationwide. They also talked about the "strengths of Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and other financial institutions," Ortiz said.

Obama called Paulson as he rode to a meeting with Pakistan's new prime minister, the campaign said.

A campaign statement said Obama asked how the Treasury Department planned to use its new authority with Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and whether the government had the tools it needs to address the challenges in the banking industry. As part of the government's effort to provide mortgage relief to hundreds of thousands of homeowners, Paulson has sought emergency power to rescue lending giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

Congress approved a housing plan last week that would provide relief for 400,000 homeowners who can't afford their payments by allowing them to refinance their mortgages with more affordable, government-backed loans. President Bush has promised to sign the package into law.

In a day of meetings, Obama also met with Pakistan's new leader, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani.

At a fundraising luncheon, he said he told Gilani "the only way we're going to be successful in the long term in defeating extremists ... is if we are giving people opportunities. If people have a chance for a better life, then they are not as likely to turn to the ideologies of violence and despair."

Like I said, this country needs someone who has the cajones to undo the damage of Bush and Cheney. If that means reversing executive orders of a past president, so be it. Those orders were illegal, which negates the rule in place that blocks such a reversal. Barack knows this. He knows how to get around legally I might add the rule that prevents such an act. Bush had no rights to demand the orders to spy, torture, cover up, hide or collude. Abuse of office and power which supersecedes executive privledge. Bush is going down.

TO: Senator Barack Obama Executive Orders Under Scrutiny by New President Elect Senator Barack Obama If President 08 July 30, 2008

This is all very well and good. This Senator Barack Obama has made something of himself by going to difficult colleges and making it. Not everyone can graduate from Harvard. Now he wants to look at maybe unfair, uncompassionate Executive Laws. Who else would do this?

I only ask that Senator Barack Obama look at other Executive Ordres and Laws as well. According to the National Coalition for the Homeless nationalhomeless.org it states,"Mayor Shirley Franklin issued and Executive Order stating food providers cannot feed the poor in parks or public places." There are other cruel panhandling laws as well in Dream Denied Report of Jan 06.

Clearly even medically one must look at medical laws and regulation too. I know that if poor face malpractice at a hospital they have no other hospital to go to and could die. Dr. Mitch Katz ignored my complaint of painfl hospital practices I submitted to him and Calif Medical Board who also ignored it.

Review of Bush's signing statements and executive orders is one of the best reasons I've seen to vote Obama. If you didn't have a reason before, this is it. Governments all over the world have taken their cue from Bush in increasing surveillance of their own citizens, limiting all types of protest, using extra-judicial powers formerly only seen in dictatorships and subverting justice. Reversing Bush's imperial presidency is vital to maintaining democracy.

No president has ever reversed an executive order of another president. He's just pandering to the left now. He's throwing you guys a bone and you're happily fetching it up.

President Bush just reversed his father's executive order banning offshore drilling.

Good gravy, where did you come up with that comment? Bush just rescinded his dad's executive order about offshore drilling! Hint: before you say something so blatantly wrong, try Google: Bush rescind Clinton Executive Order, and you will get dozens of hits on executive orders that are routinely reversed by the next president of the other party! Your comment shows a shocking lack of knowledge on the subject.

Not if it could get her a platform; she could swill some more booze and drop a few g's from her words and maybe get enough people to vote for her that she'd further ruin the democratic candidate's chances so SHE could go again in 2012. Class has never been her strong suit.

Hillary Clinton/ Ralph Nader ticket would be a special gift to McCain. It would definitely guarantee him the presidency.

Obama will "review"? After FISA, this statement falls a little short.

Exactly, if you look at the FISA vote you can see where he is going to go. he wants everyone of the tools the Bush Admin has put in place for his admin to use. Why do you think he voted yes on FISA?

Let's see it happen. Bush's signing statements and executive orders require intense review and removal; when necessary. I am happy to hear Obama considering such a review.

Obama's advice to the new Panistani Prime Minister is straight out of the book of great presidents such as Truman, Roosevelts, Lincoln, Jackson, Jefferson, Washington and our founding fathers. Unleashing opportunity for the world's traditional people who have been bound by ideology and chained to servitude for centuries, is the fundamental principle for unleashing a new golden age for all mankind.
Unleashing opportunity requires the rule and habits of law that protects the negative freedom of the many from intrusion by the powerful few--both private and public. His promise to re-establish the Constitution in our own government, while bringing to account the trespassers, is part and parcel of re-establishing opportunity and growth for all our own citizentry.
All these pronouncements support my (and others) repeated asssertions that Obama is a learning leader who thinks before he acts. He also exhibits courage while encouraging citizens to express their own best ideas. His leadership will bring forth the latent great leadership in all of us in turning our ship of state away from the deadly shoals straight ahead.

In combination, the Bushes have left us with the towering legacies of Dan Quayle (separated at birth from GW Bush, have you ever noticed how exactly alike they are in every way, and realized why GHW Bush felt so comfortable with Quayle????) and Clarence Thomas from the first Bush and now, with the even less of a namesake, limitless extra detritus (where to start, Cheney?) and fecal matter to clean up after them, like aged poodles with diarrhea leaving the White House where they have been allowed to foul everything for 8 extra years.

OF COURSE IT WILL HAVE TO BE CLEANED UP!
