NEW YORK — Here's a couch potato's dream: What if a drug could help you gain some of the benefits of exercise without working up a sweat? Scientists reported Thursday that there is such a drug _ if you happen to be a mouse.

Sedentary mice that took the drug for four weeks burned more calories and had less fat than untreated mice. And when tested on a treadmill, they could run about 44 percent farther and 23 percent longer than untreated mice.

Just how well those results might translate to people is an open question. But someday, researchers say, such a drug might help treat obesity, diabetes and people with medical conditions that keep them from exercising.

"We have exercise in a pill," said Ron Evans, an author of the study. "With no exercise, you can take a drug and chemically mimic it."

Evans, of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, Calif., and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute reports the work with colleagues in a paper published online Thursday by the journal Cell.

They also report that in mice that did exercise training, a second drug made their workout much more effective at boosting endurance. After a month of taking that drug and exercising, mice could run 68 percent longer and 70 percent farther than other mice that exercised but didn't get the drug.

Both drugs have been studied by researchers for other uses. The no-exercise drug is in advanced human testing to see if it can prevent a complication of heart bypass surgery.

Evans noted the drugs might prove irresistible for professional athletes who seek an illegal edge. He said his team has developed detection tests for use by the World Anti-Doping Agency. Evans said he has no financial interest in either drug or the test.

Resveratrol, a substance being studied for anti-aging effects, has also been reported to enable mice to run farther before exhaustion without exercise training. But the drugs in the new study appear to act more specifically on a process in muscles that boosts endurance, the researchers said.

Still, it takes more than just altered muscles to turn a sedentary mouse into a distance runner, Evans said, and "honestly, I just don't know how that happens. Whether it would happen in a person, I don't know. I think it's a small miracle it happened at all."

In fact, Evans said that when the experiment with sedentary mice was suggested by an outside scientist who was reviewing the lab's research, "I didn't think it was going to work."

The no-exercise drug is called AICAR. Previous experiments suggest that it might protect against gaining weight on a high-fat diet, which might make it useful for treating obesity, Evans said. But it would have to be taken for a long time, he said, so its safety in people would have to be assured.

Experts who study muscle agreed that a drug like AICAR may prove useful someday in treating obesity and diabetes. Many drug companies are working on such drugs in diabetes because in animals, AICAR stimulates muscles to remove sugar from the blood, noted Laurie Goodyear of the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston.

People who can't exercise because of a medical condition like joint pain or heart failure might also benefit from such a drug, experts said.

But Eric Hoffman of the Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C., noted that AICAR mimics only aerobic exercise, not the strength training that might be more useful to bedridden people or the elderly, for example. He also cautioned that it's not clear whether the new mouse results can be reproduced in people.

Goodyear said exercise has such widespread benefits in the body that she doubts any one pill will ever be able to supply all of them. "For the majority of people," she said, "it would be better to do exercise than to take a pill."

But the act of exercising can be so rewarding. I don't understand how people could loathe exercising. I take a 3 hour hike on monday mornings up in the hills interspersed with trail running and calisthenics. For another 3-4 days a week I do boot camp style training in a warehouse with about 12 other people. I have a membership at the Y, I ride my bike everywhere, I swim, etc...

It FEELS GOOD to push my muscles and frame to the limit. And I feel good about a lot of other things as a consequence of this hard work: don't have to worry so much about caloric intake, crave healthier foods, sleep better, have massive amounts of energy to get things done, etc... I am stronger than most women (and some men) my age (mid-30's)- if we could just dispel this myth that exercise sucks we would solve half the problem. It feels good people! Forget the stupid pill! All you need to do is prioritize your health- it must come first and a pill isn't gonna do it.

A pill is all well and good but will it accelerate your heart rate long enough to get the vascular benefits of exercise?

Wanna burn fat? Eat less calories than you burn. Pretty simple. Most of the people that will use this have fork to mouth disease. If you have an injury and can't exercise, then eat less.

Most of these people are just plain lazy. They are the type that will sit in their cars and wait for the closest parking space at the local Costco then go immediately to stuff their face with the free fried food samples given as tasters. Also, try and eat real food, not processed and fast food. Having a few shreds of iceberg lettuce on your big mac does not count as vegetables in your diet.

This is another example of how big pharma is looking for opportunities to capitalize on the poor health of the world.
The only way to true health is to eat REAL food, natural and satisfying enough that we are not starving an hour after a meal and filling up on processed snacks as a result. Real foods are foods that have been consumed throughout history, like eggs from free-range chickens, natural meats from grass-fed cows, and dairy products (raw from grass-fed cows) if your digestion is healthy enough to handle it. Ensuring that we get adequate fat soluble vitamins A and D through food is a great way to better health, as vitamin D has been shown to reduce the rate of insulin release, and a deficiency in which is related to autoimmune diseases. B12 is related to a host of bodily functions, including brain function and is only available to the body through animal products, contrary to popular opinion. Eating the typical low-fat diet that is pushed by the government and everyone else is a sure-fire way to deficiencies in these vitamins.
And, since the country's only gotten fatter since it was spearheaded in the 80s, low fat apparently hasn't helped the obesity problem. Also, outpatient treatment of depression has increased 300% since we've all reduced our cholesterol, which is responsible for serotonin production, and half of all heart attacks happen to people with low cholesterol.

Or do we work so many hours that any kind of exercise time is a luxury we can't manage? In my socioecomonic bracket everyone works two jobs, like I do, or massive overtime like my son and boyfriend. No time for anything but work and keeping up with daily chores and responsibilities.

If you are in a socioeconomic class that necessitates two jobs than you must be fit as can be from running around and not having any time to overeat? Fat poor people, what an oxymoron!

Clearly we are but that is not the point really. What these compounds do it actually alter your genetic make up. This means that nature and nurture are interconnected and we are not compelled to live with the genes we inherited from our parents. We can actually switch on genes through our diet and behavior. First it was transmax resveratrol which was shown in the Harvard study to switch on the SirT1 sirtuin, then Aircar that increases muscle efficiency and strength and just a couple of days ago a simple alcohol found in citrus was shown to have extraordinary effects against pancreas cancer. This science is advancing at a phenomenal rate and will have a huge effect on our health and well being.

THey still have not come up with the anti-dumb pill, which is what Americans truly need.

Transmax resveratrol, a concentrated form of the compound found in red wine used by scientists to study its anti-aging effects has been shown to have the same effect and can be obtained now at relatively low prices. Since the Harvard study on resveratrol's ability to double physical endurance was published in Nature a flood of dubious companies have sprung up selling resveratrol. One even makes his capsules in a rented house in Florida. Consumer Lab, an independent testing authority, evaluated the major brands and found many lacking in content and quality. The highest potency and best value products that passed their evaluation were Biotivia, Transmax and Bioforte. A product by Life Extension Co. failed badly with only 26% of the claimed resveratrol. Another brand, Revatrol, had virtually no trans-resveratrol in its supplement. The ConsumerLab test results are available on their web site. It is no good wasting money on a supplement that does not actually have the compound you are looking to use in it.

I'm a Type 2 diabetic who exercises 9 hours a week at the gym to control my sugar. While I'm encouraged about a drug helping my muscles to metabolize sugar and double my workout results, I'm cautious about magic pills. I'm terrified of the long-term side-effects, and while these so-called "miracle" drugs treat one problem, they can cause other problems, like the Lipitor that's helping to control my cholesterol while slowly destroying my liver.

FYI, diabetes is an allergy to the sugars in food. With Type 2, my pancreas still produces insulin, but my body no longer uses it to process the sugars needed to fuel my cells. Insulin is the thermostat that maintains blood sugar levels, but diabetes broke that thermostat so now I have to manually keep my levels normal with constant micro-management. I need rigorous exercise to force my body to burn off excess sugars.

Poorly-managed Type 1 diabetes just killed my husband's 24-year-old cousin a few months ago so believe me, NO ONE would be happier that I would to see diabetes cured in my lifetime. If I could replace the arsenal of pills I use to control my diabetes with just one pill that would cure it, I'd have to take it. But eating properly and regular exercise would have helped me AVOID DIABETES IN THE FIRST PLACE. I don't know that I want a pill to do it all for me because I live healthier now.

they always say stuff like this and you never see it, or it turns out that it causes embarrassing anal drip. (I'm not even joking).

This one probably send your thyroid into outer space.

I don't see how it could work. If you are lying on the couch, the only muscle working is the heart. The only way it could work is to spend up the heart. This is a gimmick. I remember a pill they came out with about 10 years ago, that prevented the indigestion of fat. Yea, I just checked, it is still on the market (Xencal).
