WASHINGTON — Anthrax-laced letters that killed five people and severely rattled the post-9/11 nation may have been part of an Army scientist's warped plan to test his cure for the deadly toxin, officials said Friday. The brilliant but troubled scientist committed suicide this week, knowing prosecutors were closing in.

The sudden naming of scientist Bruce E. Ivins as the top _ and perhaps only _ suspect in the anthrax attacks marks the latest bizarre twist in a case that has confounded the FBI for nearly seven years. Last month, the Justice Department cleared Ivins' colleague, Steven Hatfill, who had been wrongly suspected in the case, and paid him $5.8 million.

Ivins worked at the Army's biological warfare defense labs at Fort Detrick, Md., for 35 years until his death on Tuesday. He was one of the government's leading scientists researching vaccines and cures for anthrax exposure. But he also had a long history of homicidal threats, according to papers filed last week in local court by a social worker.

The letters containing anthrax powder were sent on the heels of the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and turned up at congressional offices, newsrooms and elsewhere, leaving a deadly trail through post offices on the way. The powder killed five, sent numerous victims to hospitals and caused near panic in many locations.

Workers in protective garb that made them look like space men decontaminated U.S. Capitol buildings after anthrax letters were discovered there. Major postal substations were closed for years. Newsrooms were checked all over after anthrax letters were mailed to offices in Florida and New York.

The Justice Department said Friday only that "substantial progress has been made in the investigation." The statement did not identify Ivins.

However, several U.S. officials said prosecutors were focusing on the 62-year-old Ivins and planned to seek a murder indictment and the death penalty. Authorities were investigating whether Ivins, who had complained about the limits of testing anthrax drugs on animals, had released the toxin to test the treatment on humans.

The officials all discussed the continuing investigation on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

The Justice Department is expected to decide within days whether to close the "Amerithrax" investigation now that its main target is dead. If the case remains open, that could indicate there still are other suspects.

Ivins' attorney asserted the scientist's innocence and said he had cooperated with investigators for more than a year.

"We are saddened by his death, and disappointed that we will not have the opportunity to defend his good name and reputation in a court of law," said Paul F. Kemp.

Ivins died Tuesday at Frederick Memorial Hospital in Maryland. Relatives told The Associated Press that he killed himself. Kemp said his client's death was the result of the government's "relentless pressure of accusation and innuendo."

For more than a decade, Ivins had worked to develop an anthrax vaccine that was effective even in cases where different strains of anthrax were mixed _ a situation that made vaccines ineffective _ according to federal documents reviewed by the AP. In 2003, he shared the Decoration for Exceptional Civilian Service for his work on the anthrax vaccine. The award is the highest honor given to Defense Department civilian employees.

Ivins conducted numerous anthrax studies, including one that complained about the limited supply of monkeys available for testing. The study also said animal testing couldn't accurately show how humans would respond to anthrax treatment.

The Fort Detrick laboratory and its specialized scientists for years have been at the center of the FBI's investigation of the anthrax mailings. In late June, the government exonerated Hatfill, whose name has for years had been associated with the attacks. Then-Attorney General John Ashcroft called him a "person of interest" in 2002.

Investigators also had noticed Ivins' unusual behavior at Fort Detrick in the six months following the anthrax mailings. He conducted unauthorized testing for anthrax spores outside containment areas at the infectious disease research unit where he worked, according to an internal report. But the focus stayed on Hatfill.

Ivins' friends, colleagues and court documents paint a picture of a flourishing scientist with an emotionally unstable side. Maryland court documents show he recently received psychiatric treatment and was ordered to stay away from a woman he was accused of stalking and threatening to kill.

Social worker Jean C. Duley filed handwritten court documents last week saying she was preparing to testify before a grand jury. She said Ivins would be charged with five capital murders.

"Client has a history dating to his graduate days of homicidal threats, plans and actions towards therapist," Duley said, adding that his psychiatrist had described him as homicidal and sociopathic.

Authorities have been watching Ivins for some time. His brother, Tom Ivins, said federal agents questioned the scientist about a year and a half ago. Neighbors said FBI agents in cars with tinted windows conducted surveillance on his home. A colleague, Henry S. Heine, said that over the past year, he and others on their team had testified before a federal grand jury in Washington that has been investigating the anthrax mailings.

On July 10, police responded to Fort Detrick to speak with Ivins. He was ultimately removed from his job and taken to a hospital for psychiatric evaluation because of concern he had become a danger to himself or others.

The victims of the attacks had little in common.

Robert Stevens, 63, a photo editor at the Sun, a supermarket tabloid published in Boca Raton, Fla., was the first to die.

Thomas Morris Jr. 55, and Joseph Curseen, 47, worked at a Washington-area postal facility that was a hub for sorting the capital's mail.

Kathy Nguyen, 61, who had emigrated from Vietnam and lived in the Bronx, worked in a stock room at Manhattan Eye Ear & Throat Hospital. Ottilie Lundgren, 94, who lived in Oxford, Conn., was the last to die.

Associated Press writers David Dishneau and Chrissie Thompson from Frederick, Md., and AP researchers Susan James and Jennifer Farrar in New York contributed to this report.

If the "stellar" record of the FBI on this investigation is to be my guide, I can only infer that they probably have hounded an innocent man to death. The FBI will probably count this as a victory but I can't but wonder if the person who did this is out there giggling over a flask of anthrax as he plots his next dastardly deed....

This man did NOT commit suicide, he was murdered like so many other biochemists and biowarfare researchers around the world who have turned up dead since 9/11. Look at the two young French biochemists in the Uk last month who were stabbed over 200 times...because someone wanted to steal their gameboys??? WRONG! their computers were stolen first they discovered something.

What worries me the most right nnow ifs that this feels like the summer of 2001 and we may be in for another big something before you know who leaves office.

Also look at a biotech company based in New Jersey (where the anthrax was mailed from in the fist place!) a cxompany with millions in contracts post 9/11 called Elusys which makes anthrax vaccines and was started by venture caputal put together by Neal Bush the bro of president while working out of past presidents office in Houston. Put together in 99.

WAKE UP AMERICA!!!!!!!!

Having just read a more full account of events here: http://www.salon.com/opinion/greenwald/2008/08/01/anthrax/ - and having taken a few minutes to reflect on my own recollections, I am now more forgiving of my fellow Americans who I have long thought morons for their linking of Iraq with the events of September 11, 2001. This article makes it clear that there were deliberate - and effective - efforts by the main stream media, and primarily ABC News, in putting forward this propagandistic meme.

We all know now that Iraq was NOT involved in the September attacks, however, back in 2002, we should give our fellow citizens some slack - more than we might have - for being deceived...

“Only the small secrets need to be protected. The big ones are kept secret by public incredulity.” - Marshall McLuhan

There was never any intention to keep this, 9/11, or JFK completely secret. The perpetrators expected that *some* people would find out the truth. They also expected that the majority would believe whatever they were told. They further knew that it would be a simple matter to dismiss us as crackpot tinfoil-hat-wearing conspiratorial nut-jobs.

There are people posting here right now on the Huffington Post who know the truth. The question is, what can we do about it?

It's not a rhetorical question. What can we do about this?

Anonymously posting our outrage on some message board rather than taking real action will only give the perps the satisfaction of knowing they got away with it again. It will embolden them.

I absolutely don't advocate violence against the state. In fact I would be terrified to advocate violence against the state. I'm afraid I would disappear in the night or have an accident. Does anyone else feel the same?

I'm afraid we have already been defeated. We are helpless. There is nothing we can do.

The atrocities can get worse and the ranks of people who see through the lies can grow, and yet nothing will change because we are terrified. All we can do is feebly type on the internet and hope someone else will magically save us.

The Founding Fathers are weeping somewhere.

I agree.

But I am not some random guy: I am working to bring about change.

It's not too late. We have had ONE great marvel appear before us like an angelic host: The Internet. So long as we can keep it free and available, even though our words might be recorded, we have a chance for both gathering information for ourselves and we have a chance to communicate and peacefully assemble.

The pendulum CAN swing the other way. It's going to take dedication and sophistication.

I think our priority has to be on purging the Democratic ranks of Republican-Lite DINOs - we can let the FISA bill vote serve as our guide: just less than half have to go. By my count, there were 150 real Dems and 140 DINOs - Senate: 15 good, 35 DINO, House: 135 good, 105 DINO. If we can manage to keep out the Rs that will want to infiltrate in '10, we might get the party back, and in so doing give ourselves a real chance at earning our democracy back.

But we'll need to fight in a more sophisticated way, using PRIMARIES that so many today are ignoring - they are the real battleground now. And, we need to be willing to vote Independent sometimes, and help fund each other's campaigns...

Here's the fight I'm working on now: Remove Nancy. If you can, please donate generously to CindyForCongress.org. Thanks.

Our only "power" is economic and they're making sure we lose that, too.

In the mean time, snap your wallets shut and START A GARDEN! Food is next. The American spirit is to be broken . . . unless we refuse to allow it. Dig deep for that pioneering DNA.

Cuba faced a similar crisis during the fall of the Soviet Union. Google Havana Cuban Urban Farming to see what they did about it. It's AMAZING. If you don't believe a city can feed itself without imports or petroleum products prepare to be awed.

This is not hyperbole: Food is next. Research the history of the Stalin purges. They didn't teach you what happened in the southern provinces of the Soviet Union for a reason: More people were killed via starvation and concentration camps than were killed during the H olo cau st. All because the farmers rejected the kind of statism the neocons and the neobo lshev iks are shoving down our throats today.

Well looky! All previous references to the guy who probably really did it - - the guy who was caught on that lab's security cam at a suspicious time doing a very suspicious thing when he had no business being in the lab cause he'd been fired - have been deleted AGAIN!

Poster above says-"we all know damn well, if this guy actually had a heavily documented long history of homicidal threats and psychopathic and sociopathic behavior, the US military would not keep him on for 35 years as their best and only Anthrax researcher and developer at the Army's biological warfare defense labs, obviously a potentially disastrous combination of factors"

NOT TRUE ! That's the REAL scarey part

But then again as our government goes, homicidal threats and psychopathic and sociopathic behavior may be a requirement for about any position.

Consider for a moment the motive of TRILLIONS of dollars of funding with very little oversight.

Also consider the risk of exposure in an open murder trial of extremely sensitive " classified"
documents that could provide a damning paper trail implicating certain insiders in the DOJ, CIA DOD, NSA and bio-weapons research facilities.

Consider the actual mailing date of these letters and the fact that numerous media and government
personnel were warned "in advance" to take Cipro. also how this mailing date related to the events
of 9/11.

Also consider the ridiculous likelihood that an advanced bio-weapons researcher would " do himself in" using Tylenol with Codeine.

Then consider how all of this might weigh as a motive to "Suicide" and " Discredit"
a witness who could very easily validate clear evidence that this administration used
false and misleading government sponsored propaganda to market their fear campaign
leading to the war in Iraq.

It is now clear that ABC News was complicit in the bombardment of misleading government sponsored
propaganda as are numerous media publications who also failed in their duty as responsible journalists to expose this story to the public.

All of this indicates a very strong "probable cause" to open a full investigation into what really happened and who exactly was involved.

This implausible "suicide by painkiller" excuse just stinks to high heaven.

I don't know how many people here are aware of a very similar case several years ago here in the UK, when a highly respected UK government weapons inspector, Dr. David Kelly, who had criticised the Blair government's "sexing up" of highly corrupted and manipulated pseudo intelligence on Iraq's nuclear and biological weapons status (The now infamous Downing Street Dossier) was found dead in a field one day, supposedly having cut his wrist with a 2" pen-knife and swallowing some co-proxamol painkillers.

The local coroner was not allowed to do the autopsy, several people stated that it was impossible for him to have died by taking such a small quantity of co-proxamol tablets, and the knife cut on on his ulnar artery couldn't have caused him to bleed to death either. There was no blood to speak of at the scene. It was a secret service hit-job, and everyone here damn well knows it, but the judge who carried out the so-called inquiry was a Blair place-man who delivered a perfect whitewash.

As someone else has said here, isn't it just astonishing how many micro-biologists have died under mysterious or violent circumstances since 2001?

If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it's a duck...

Was it seven long years? So the story goes the FBI were on the wrong track, that compares to the terrorists investigation of them going to fly planes into buildings, very convienient for the Bush administration to start a war using " slam dunk Tennet." Tme to clean house of these incompetents, who failed to find the spys, and traitors working for Russia , Israel, and who knows.

I just want to say:

Ivins is innocent. Why?

Because he is INNOCENT until proven guilty in a court of law...and that won't ever happen!

Don't trust the MSM and their demonizing of Ivins. None of us ever knew the man.

just read the Greenwald piece.

So why doesn't ABC News and Brian Ross tell us who those 3 or 4 sources who linked the anthrax to Iraq were?

Why maintain their cover after all these years?

Why maintain the cover of government officials who lied to them? Wouldn't they be willing to uncover the liars? How is keeping their identities secret good for the news business, ABC or the public?

Government officials can lie to the media in secret and the media will keep that secret?

Doesn't sound like a good business model to me. What is to keep them from continually lying?

Why are there no consequences?

Greenwald's Iraq angle today is ridiculous. There were many theories floated around that time, domestic, Pakistan, russia, on and on. ABC's source may be some low level blowhard, they will never admit they printed a story on such information. It is common.

The US government has repetitively stated the attack was by a domestic actor. Trying to relive the Iraq War via this story is foolish. The real story is who did it. There is less evidence this guy did it than Stephen Hatfield. Yet throw out the idea Mr. Ivins was religious, many bark he must be guilty.

I disagree.

I would bet the link between Iraq and anthrax came from Cheney's office.

Which is big news.

Why ANY secret sources.

But when the media have been played for fools why do they maintain the secrecy?

(...concluding my post above)

And if you had any doubts that this is a cover-up of high crimes in high places, out rolls Gerald "Oswald, the archetypal lone nut patsy did it" Posner, laughably introduced as an "Investigative Journalist" to peddle this latest official fraud to an all too gullible American public.

If one instead applies Occam's Razor, a much clearer picture emerges:

Criminals in high office in the Bush Administration attacked Americans in October 2001, just as they attacked Americans two weeks prior on 9-11, all to stampede this country into supporting/accepting police-state fascism at home and war-piracy abroad.

It's time we quit ignoring the elephant in the room and face up to this grim reality. Our government has gone rogue. Powerful elements of our spooked-up so-called national security establishment are committing treason against this Republic. We, the people, will either reign them in or be reigned in by them. Come 2009, war crimes and treason trials of high Bush administration officials (and all who collaborated with them) need to begin in earnest.
