Airbus's A380 superjumbo touched down at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport on Friday, marking the first commercial arrival of the giant, double-decker passenger plane on U.S. soil.
The Emirates aircraft, carrying 489 passengers in varying degrees of luxury, landed smoothly and on time after a 13-1/2-hour flight from Dubai.

One of the most stupid investment ever. Who the hell is going to fly on that and pay for the gas? They might start charging for the oxygen to make up for a bad investment.

You remind me of the time in the mid-sixties when Bob Dylan was touring Europe. All the folkies and intellectuals expected Bob to think like them and hate the U.S. of A. I've been on other flights when you could just see the pilot struggling to keep it 'straight' with the rush to the back about 30 minutes before landing.

I am amazed at the beauty of this aircraft. As a retired International Flight Attendant, I would love to work on one of these. I can imagine the state of the art facilities on board.
My concern is that when weather creeps into our cities and a bunch of these are diverted to alternative airports, how will we handle 1000s of more passengers that are stranded? As it is, people sleep in the airport and litter the halls due to lack of hotel space. This is going to be a huge mess. If one cancels, it will be horrible to try to get that many people on other flights and on their way. It already is a problem. The thought of the added load boggles the mind.

I remember reading that only a few airports in America can handle these monsters (maybe they need longer runways?) If an A380 can't land at O'Hare because the airport is fogged out, where are they going to divert it to, LAX?
There are only so many airports this thing could even divert into. Most airports don't have the infrastructure to handle something this size.
