From the Associated Press:

LOS ANGELES -- Christina Applegate is undergoing treatment for breast cancer, but the disease was caught early and the actress is expected to fully recover, her publicist said.

The Emmy winner's cancer was detected through an MRI ordered by a doctor and is not life-threatening, publicist Ame Van Iden said in a statement Saturday.

Applegate is scheduled to appear on a one-hour television special, "Stand Up To Cancer," to be aired on ABC, CBS and NBC on Sept. 5 to raise funds for cancer research.

The 36-year-old actress has been nominated for an Emmy and a Golden Globe for the show "Samantha Who?", in which she plays a woman who wakes from a coma with no memory of who she is.

Air and water pollution may very well have brought up the rate of all cancers. I wonder if, in China and India anyone is keeping tabs on cancer rates....as the pollution rates rise rapidly from year to year.

Good for you for coming out publicly about this and making sure that women know catching breast cancer early is the key to survival. It also means far less invasive treatment is needed and recovery is much faster. Bless you, and stay strong from a three year BC survivor.

Wow....how scary, but the good thing is that she was proactive and found the cancerous breast tissue early.

This should remind all of us women, especially those who are my age (mid 30's) and younger to continue to take better care of ourselves, or to start being more aggressive if we've gotten into some bad habits (such as my 10 pm Oreo addiction........). So many of our peers still believe that this can't happen to women under 40, but this demonstrates yet again that sometimes we have to pitch the established medical "norm" and follow our collective gut feeling.

But you guys aren't off the hook, either. Take care of your buttocks and get a prostate and colon cancer screening. Your anonymous poster/wife/sister/mom/spouse/co-workers aren't nagging when they ask you to go to the doctor's office...we're just showing concern.

Best of luck Ms. Applegate, and thank you for yet again reminding all of us how important it is to take care of ourselves.

Sad! I know it was a flawed movie (okay, very flawed) but I cannot get that one line from "Medicine Man" where Sean Connery plays a doctor looking for a cure for the "greatest gawddamn scrouge of the 20th Century". And now it is the 21st and still it spreads.

Don't smoke, people.

Perhaps I'm missing something here...just what is the connection between smoking and breast cancer? My mom, a non-smoker, is a breast cancer survivor. So while I would agree that smoking can lead to cancer, I would also say that I've known a number of individuals in my lifetime who have had cancer (some beat it, some succumbed to it) and none of them smoked. So while your "don't smoke" campaign is appreciated, it would have had more merit with some proper context, especially as it relates to THIS story.

Ms. Applegate, here's wishing you a speedy and healthy recovery.

"I would also say that I've known a number of individuals in my lifetime who have had cancer (some beat it, some succumbed to it) and none of them smoked."

So what? There are people who have broken bones without falling off of ladders, but that doesn't mean there's no connection between falling off a ladder and breaking bones.

Smoking causes cancer. That doesn't mean that nothing else does. And smoking doesn't just cause lung cancer; there's a positive correlation between smoking and other kinds of cancer, including breast cancer.
