Obama Calls McCain Out After Day Of Distortions: "It's Like These Guys Take Pride In Being Ignorant"

Obama

On a day in which both presidential campaigns focused all their rhetorical might on debating energy production, Barack Obama claimed the most iconic moment. The quote was so lacerating, John McCain's own campaign immediately sent out a response to reporters, hoping to blunt its impact.

But since McCain aides had been twisting the truth on Obama's energy policy all day long, it's far from clear that the GOP can spin this line their way too.

Speaking to a crowd in Berea, Ohio, Obama went off on a riff, laughing at Republicans who are isolating his call for tire inflation as the linchpin of his energy plan. After noting that his energy policy has a lot more to it, Obama circled back to wonder why Republicans were choosing to mock an idea, small though it was, that could actually help matters.

"Now two points," Obama told the crowd. "One, they know they're lying about what my energy plan is, but the other thing is they're making fun of a step that every expert says would absolutely reduce our oil consumption by three to four percent. It's like these guys take pride in being ignorant." At that point, the crowd let out a collective laugh. A couple lines later, Obama had them on their feet.

The McCain campaign couldn't resist taking these remarks out of context. Spokesman Tucker Bounds wrote in an email: "Please see our campaign's response to Senator Barack Obama's insistence that if Americans simply inflated their car tires it would be a more effective solution to America's energy crisis than expanding our domestic oil drilling capability."

All well and good, except that's not what Obama actually said in Ohio on Tuesday. (He has previously, and ABC's Jake Tapper caught him out on it, but not today.) The narrow quote Bounds takes from Obama -- "we would actually probably save more oil than all the oil that we'd get from John McCain drilling" -- is meant to suggest that Obama believes efficiency savings from tire inflation could outstrip all hypothetical offshore drilling, a claim for which there is no hard evidence. But, traveling past the place where Bounds chooses to stop quoting, it's clear Obama was not making his exaggerated past claim again, but rather setting up a joke.

In full, Obama's sentence reads: "I said you could inflate your tires to the proper levels, and that if everybody in America inflated their tires to the proper level, we would actually probably save more oil than all the oil that we'd get from John McCain drilling right below his feet, wherever he was actually going to drill."

Obama was referencing a dig at McCain from earlier in the day. As CNN reported Tuesday:

"Instead of offering a real plan to lower gas prices, the only energy plan that he's really promoting is more drilling," Obama told supporters at a town hall meeting in Ohio. "That's what he talked about yesterday. I want to drill here. I want to drill now. I don't know where he was standing. I think he was in a building somewhere."

But twisting Obama's remarks on energy was something of a playbook in the McCain campaign all day long.

At a nuclear power plant in Michigan, McCain himself made the claim that "Senator Obama has said that expanding our nuclear power plants 'doesn't make sense for America.'"

That's a downright dishonest reading of what Obama actually said during his July 24 speech on renewable energy.

"Meanwhile, the oil companies already own drilling rights to 68 million acres of federal lands, onshore and offshore, that they haven't touched. 68 million acres that have the potential to nearly double America's total oil production, and John McCain wants to give them more. Well that might make sense in Washington, but it doesn't make sense for America. In fact, it makes about as much sense as his proposal to build 45 new nuclear reactors without a plan to store the waste some place other than right here at Yucca Mountain."

As the Obama campaign noted in its own press release today, Obama is not dead set against bringing more nuclear plants online. He just wants a better plan in place to deal with spent fuel before that happens. That balanced approach actually earned Obama some grief from John Edwards in primary season.

The "menu of options" Obama advocated then sounds an awful lot like the "all of the above" rhetoric on energy solutions that McCain pressed today. But you'd never know it from McCain economic adviser Doug Holtz-Eakin, who, on yet another conference call with reporters, said: "[Obama] has said no to nuclear power. He has said no to domestic supply on all fronts. ... He is happier with higher gas prices."

After all of that distortion, perhaps Obama was owed the opportunity for a sharp comeback on the topic of ignorance.

We just posted ringtone-ready audio of the "ignorant" line over at Entertonement: http://entertonement.com/clips/11728/Politics-News/Barack-Obama/Inflate-Your-Tires/Take-pride-in-being-ignorant

He's right, you know. Repubics DO pride themselves on their stupidity.

Actually, the Repubs pride themselves on getting over on the average American's stupidity.....

We might bemoan the fact that O is seemingly going negative, but I say... Get even MORE negative.. That seems to be the only thing that the Repub voting base seems to understand...

I'll forgive you O.... it's for a good cause..

The future of our nation and our children

Hallelujah Barack! Just keep on telling the truth, with a sense of humor to boot. Keep on fighting their lies and telling your own story and your ideas for America. We need you so much now!
And please always remember and don't ever forget: John McCain is a lying, stinking, steaming, nasty sack of liquid crap!
Note: I am not running for President and I am sick of losing, therefore I have no qualms about name-calling. I would point out also that it is NOT a lie!!!

sounds like obama is starting to crack a little...let the wining commence, followed by a pretty speech about 'hope' and 'change' and cute little fuzzy puppies

Wining and dining.
I know what you meant, but in view of your sarcastic and negative attitude, don't expect me to cut you any slack over the fact that you can't spell.

The thing I loved about this clip, really loved, is when he said "They know they are lying."
He didn't say misleading. He didn't say misspeaking. He said lying.
He was telling the truth. Truth is beauty.
Obama's campaign is a thing of beauty. We haven't seen that for a long, long time.

I think he is right about them being proud of being ignorant. The more stupid the idea the more republicans you find backing it. I have said it many times before and it is absolutely true.
republican = insanity!

The opposition party keeps on playing this game election cycle after election cycle.
They just keep repeating the same lie over and over as if it is true and hope that it sticks.
There are a lot of low information voters out there who don’t take the time to educate them selves, as a result all they are left with are sound bites such as O’s a celebrity, his energy policy is nothing more than inflating tires, he is going to raise your taxes.
Haven’t we learned from these thugs by now if you repeat any thing often enough people will begin to believe it true!

Bravo Obama. Give no quarter. Finally... a glimmer of hope. I'm an independent and I can go either way at this stage of the game. If you want my vote I need to see the size of the fight in the dog... not the other way around.

It's not ignorance that drives these remarks, it's that the GOP does not have anything positive to offer the public on most of the important problems facing the nation, so, they make light of the issues! It's good to see Obama bringing these silly notions the GOP is projecting back home to roost in their lair! Go get them Obama!

never under estimate the pervasiveness of stupid. All john has to do is reply in a way that seems plausible, counting on Americans to be lazy and not check the facts. The MSM won't address it, most in the public won't bother, and those who don't like Obama will just take whatever John says as coin of the realm.

He has turned this issue into a real positive for him. How long has that been for a Dem presidential candidate.

He actually called the McCain camp and GOP liars and did it with humor and in a disarming way. He is a remarkable candidate. He also pointed out how the right revels in ignorance. H.annity, O'Rei.lly and R.ush say hi!

Just think back to B.ob D.ole's famous "stop lying about my record" sneering statement and how Ke.rry and Gor.e's responses to GOP lies.

"Spokesman Tucker Bounds wrote in an email..."

Tucker? What self-respecting mother would name her child Tucker? What an unctuous "Republican" sounding name. The only Google reference I can find for a possible source of the name Tucker is the 1948 Tucker Sedan. Some Parents name their children after the location they were conceived (Paris for instance). Sounds like good-old-boy Tucker's mom had fond memories of the back of daddy's old sedan.

Look, they arent ignorant and we all know that.
The problem is they do it on purpose and we all know that too.
This isnt by accident that they take everything said out of context and distort it.
Its not an accident that McCain flip flops on ever issue important to GOP power people.
Its not an accident that surprisingly money started flowing to his campaign a few months ago when
he BEGAN is major flip flopping.
Its not an accident that they tell outright lies, and create 527s or PACs that are completely patriotic and American sounding but then deliver a message of fabrications, lies, unconstitutional policy and hate.

Obama is still making statements that show a great misunderstanding of reality. It is true that experts agree that the energy savings between driving on grossly under inflated and properly inflated tires is three to four percent. But that means to make Obama’s statement accurate all Americans would have to be driving around on under inflated tires. That is just not realistic.

So everyone basically agrees with 0bama (Mc c ain, the WH, NASCAR, the EPA, the DoE) except for a small handful of right-wing distortionists, and you're saying 0bama doesn't understand reality.

I think I'll stick with all of the above; if you don't want to inflate your tires, don't do it. Nobody is forcing you to take good advice.

For a realistic energy plan that includes alternatives and renewables, take a look at 0bama's energy plan. Firmly based in reality.

No one is saying that properly inflated tires will not save energy over improperly inflated tires. The point is when Obama states that experts agree this will save 3-4 percent of oil consumption he is dead wrong. It may be that he does not understand the issues or that he is intentionally distorting the facts. Either way it does not say good things about Obama.

That might be true, but that isn't the point. The point is that McCain was going around making fun of what is true, that's the point. The point isn't whether or not every American would have to be driving around on under inflated tires. Secondly, this was a response to an individual. The fact that Obama suggested that people inflate their tires doesn't indicate that he's saying mostly if not all of Americans don't inflate their tires. Most people do ride on underinflated tires, otherwise people wouldn't have to to the pump as much.

That's not unrealistic when most people don't check to make sure their tires at at the correct level and most tires are probably are under inflated. This is why all those folks said we need to check our tire pressure long before Obama ever stated it.
