In this image, made from television, Russian military vehicles are moving towards the breakaway South Ossetia republic's capital, Tskhinvali, on Friday, Aug. 8, 2008. Russia's Defense Ministry says it has sent reinforcements to its peacekeepers deployed to South Ossetia to help end bloodshed. Georgian officials confirmed that the Russian convoy had crossed the border and was advancing toward Tskhinvali. Georgia launched a massive attack Friday to regain control over South Ossetia, using heavy artillery, aircraft and armor. South Ossetian officials said at least 15 people were killed Friday and an unspecified number were wounded. (AP Photo/APTN)

DZHAVA, Georgia — Russia sent an armored column into the breakaway enclave of South Ossetia after Georgia, a staunch U.S. ally, launched an offensive to crush separatists. Georgia reported early Saturday that warplanes attacked three of its bases and some key oil facilities.

Witnesses said hundreds of civilians have died in the fighting, which threatened to ignite a wider war between Georgia and Russia and escalate tensions between Moscow and Washington.

Georgia said it was forced to launch the assault because of rebel attacks; the separatists alleged Georgia violated a cease-fire.

The South Ossetian capital of Tskhinvali was reportedly devastated. Ossetia spokeswoman Irina Gagloyeva said the city came under prolonged fire during the night "but it was suppressed" by the armed forces, the Interfax news agency quoted her as saying Saturday.

"I saw bodies lying on the streets, around ruined buildings, in cars," said Lyudmila Ostayeva, 50, who had fled with her family to Dzhava, a village near the border with Russia. "It's impossible to count them now. There is hardly a single building left undamaged."

The fighting broke out as much of the world's attention was focused on the start of the Olympic Games and many leaders, including Russia's Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and President Bush, were in Beijing.

The timing suggested Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili may have been counting on surprise to fulfill his longtime pledge to wrest back control of South Ossetia _ a key to his hold on power. The rebels seek to unite with North Ossetia, which is part of Russia.

Saakashvili agreed the timing was not coincidental, but accused Russia of being the aggressor. "Most decision makers have gone for the holidays," he told CNN. "Brilliant moment to attack a small country."

Seeking to prevent an all-out war, diplomats issued a flurry of statements calling on both sides to halt the fighting. The U.N. Security Council held two tense emergency sessions 12 hours apart with both sides using the forum to launch accusations. As the meeting recessed, officials promised a third council session Saturday.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice urged Russia to halt aircraft and missile attacks and withdraw combat forces from Georgian territory. Rice said in a statement the United States wants Russia to respect Georgian sovereignty and agree to international mediation.

The leader of South Ossetia's rebel government, Eduard Kokoity, said about 1,400 people were killed in the onslaught, the Interfax news agency reported. The toll could not be independently confirmed.

As night fell, there were conflicting claims as to who held the battlefield advantage.

Saakashvili said "Georgian military forces completely control all the territory of South Ossetia" except for a northern section adjacent to Russia. But Russian news agencies cited a Russian military official as saying heavy fighting was under way on the outskirts of the regional capital.

Early Saturday, Interior Ministry spokesman Shota Utiashvili said the Vaziani military base on the outskirts of the Georgian capital was bombed by warplanes during the night and that bombs fell in the area of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline. He also said two other Georgian military bases were hit and that warplanes bombed the Black Sea port city of Poti, which has a sizable oil shipment facility.

Utiashvili said there apparently were significant casualties and damage in the attacks, but that further details would not be known until the morning.

Earlier, Georgia's Foreign Ministry accused Russian aircraft of bombing two military air bases, inflicting some casualties and destroying several military aircraft. Rustavi 2 television said four people were killed and five wounded at the Marneuli air base.

Twelve Russian troops were killed and 30 wounded in the fighting, said Russian Ground Forces spokesman Col. Igor Konashenkov. Saakashvili said late Friday that about 30 Georgians had been killed "mainly members of the Georgian armed forces."

It was unclear what might persuade either side to stop shooting. Both claim the battle started after the other side violated a cease-fire that had been declared just hours earlier after a week of sporadic clashes.

The United States was sending in its top Caucasus envoy, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Matthew Bryza, to try to end the bloodshed.

It was the worst outbreak of hostilities since the province won de facto independence in a war against Georgia that ended in 1992. Russian troops went in as peacekeepers but Georgia alleges they now back the separatists.

Russia, which has granted citizenship to most of the region's residents, appeared to lay much of the responsibility for ending the fighting on Washington.

In a telephone conversation with Rice, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Georgia must be convinced to withdraw its forces, according to a ministry statement.

Georgia, which borders the Black Sea between Turkey and Russia, was ruled by Moscow for most of the two centuries preceding the breakup of the Soviet Union. Georgia has angered Russia by seeking NATO membership _ a bid Moscow regards as part of a Western effort to weaken its influence in the region.

Saakashvili long has pledged to restore Tbilisi's rule over South Ossetia and another breakaway province, Abkhazia. Both regions have run their own affairs without international recognition since splitting from Georgia in the early 1990s and have built up ties with Moscow.

Georgia has about 2,000 troops in Iraq, making it the third-largest contributor to coalition forces after the U.S. and Britain. But Saakashvili told CNN the troops would be called home Saturday in the face of the South Ossetia fighting.

A senior U.S. defense official said Georgian authorities have asked the United States for help getting their troops out of Iraq. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the discussions have been private, said no formal decision has been made on whether to support the departure, but said it is likely the U.S. will do so.

Also, Pentagon officials said Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, has reached out to his counterparts in Russia and Georgia, but has not yet connected with them.

Russia's Defense Ministry said it was sending in reinforcements for its troops in the province, and Russian state television and Georgian officials reported a convoy of tanks had crossed the border. The convoy was expected to reach the provincial capital, Tskhinvali, by evening, Channel One television said.

Putin warned in the early stages of the conflict that the Georgian attack would draw retaliation and the Defense Ministry pledged to protect South Ossetians, most of whom have Russian citizenship.

Chairing a session of his Security Council in the Kremlin, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev also vowed that Moscow will protect Russian citizens.

"In accordance with the constitution and federal law, I, as president of Russia, am obliged to protect lives and dignity of Russian citizens wherever they are located," Medvedev said. "We won't allow the death of our compatriots go unpunished."

On Friday, an AP reporter saw tanks and other heavy weapons concentrating on the Russian side of the border with South Ossetia _ supporting the reports of an incursion. Some villagers were fleeing into Russia.

The Georgian state minister for reintegration, Temur Yakobashvili, said Georgian forces had shot down four Russian combat planes over Georgian territory but gave no details. Russia's Defense Ministry denied an earlier Georgia report about one Russian plane downed and had no immediate comment on the latest claim.

Yakobashvili said one Russian plane had dropped a bomb on the Vaziani military base near the Georgian capital, but no one was hurt. More than 1,000 U.S. Marines and soldiers were at the base last month to teach combat skills to Georgian troops.

South Ossetia officials said Georgia attacked with aircraft, armor and heavy artillery. Georgian troops fired missiles at Tskhinvali, an official said, and many buildings were on fire.

Georgia's president said Russian aircraft bombed several Georgian villages and other civilian facilities.

A senior Russian diplomat in charge of the South Ossetian conflict, Yuri Popov, dismissed the Georgian claims of Russian bombings as misinformation, the RIA-Novosti news agency reported.

The Georgian attack came just hours after Saakashvili announced a unilateral cease-fire in a television broadcast late Thursday in which he also urged South Ossetian separatist leaders to enter talks on resolving the conflict.

Georgian officials later blamed South Ossetian separatists for thwarting the cease-fire by shelling Georgian villages in the area.

I know the theme of this conflict is less important for Americans than upcoming elections.

I don't believe media sources. They work fot those who pays them. But I am lucky to be able to read both sides information. As somebody said, the truth is usually somewhere in the middle. I am sorry for civilians killed. I am sorry for kids, women and older people who got involved in this situation.
I am sorry we speak about cold war again. I hope it does not happen.

I hope people will finally figure out who is right and who is wrong. Russians do not want war, I assure you.

Honestly, there is no difference between South Ossetia and Kosovo.
If the US and NATO reckon Kosovo was handled correctly, then the Russians are doing a great job and should be supported, period.

Here sits America - full of hot air and NO way to back up what we say.

Nice to have a President that cannot rule the world the way he has ruled the US.

There is a god.

Remember to vote all.

:-)

Pray for all the troops.

I'm no Bush fan, but he chewed-out Putin, has protested, and demanded he stop. And will protest in the UN....You'll say thats nothing. Ok, so let me ask:

What would Obama do different? What would McCain do different? What has the EU done?

Come on, tell me? All you tough guys. You same folks cry because we're in Afghanistan. Even though the people hiding out there and who were sheltered by that govt. killed 3000 of our people.

But back to what should we do now. Well, tell us. What did LBJ when the Russians invaded Czechoslovakia in 1968? What did IKE do when the Russians invaded Hungary in 1956? What did Truman do when the Russians trampled into Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, E. Germany, and so on? ........Come on, inform me?

Obama and McCain haven't even so much as uttered a word, have they?...So tell us WHAT SHOULD WE DO?

Of course Bush will chew out Putin. But why doesn't he chew out Georgia also? They are as much of fault in this as anything else.

Georgia is a friend of this administration who trained, funded, and even armed most of the Georgian army. Arms dealers love the Repubs because they give them clients such as Georgia-- who will use what they learned from the US to wage war or to terrorize other countries.

Instead of trying to stop this war, watch Bush actually ship arms and materials to Georgia and proclaim as helping fight against tyranny and oppression or some other catch phrase which sounds good. But it will only fan the flames of more wars.

If our president was smart he'll also criticize Georgia for trying to take over that small piece of land up north. But I don't think he has the balls.

Obama released a statement that was very similar to the Bush stance. McCain released a statement that was more pro-Georgia, but of course Georgia is a client of some of McCain's lobbyist/advisors.

On Afghanistan, I hate to have to be the one to inform you of this, but 14 of the 911 hijackers were Saudi's. The Taliban has moved into Pakistan (like the Saudi's, another ally....if that's what you call them).

I agree there is little that can be done. Bush and Cheney have transformed the US into a Paper Tiger with a weak economy, a declining dollar, a military tied down fighting insurgencies in 2 nations, wrecked American credibility among it's peers and left the country so dependent upon foreign oil that even the mention of hostilities in the middle east risks damaging the economy.

Winston Churchill is believed to have said, upon returning from a visit to the front, "Nothing is so exhilarating as to be shot at -- without result."

This nicely describes our present situation. Consider well, as an exercise in the evaluation of President Bush's foreign policy, the situation which would have obtained were Georgia a member of NATO.

With regards to the Balkans and Eastern Europe, I prefer the observation of von Bismark:

"The whole of the Balkans is not worth the bones of a single Pommeranian Grenadier!"

The whole of Georgia and Ossetia is not worth the bones of a single National Guardsman from Iowa.

One could make the same argument about all of the oil in Iraq.

Putin just voted for McCain.

In the “World Electoral College”, Putin is his own “swing state.”

The McCain campaign will be out immediately with their "It's-a-dangerous-world-we-need-an-experienced-fighter-not-some-untested-kid" message.

The Obama campaign should PREMPTIVELY deliver this message:

"This is how John McCain and George Bush 'protected' us: By engaging in an 'easy war of convenience' in Iraq, thereby stretching, distracting and weakening our armed forces and deterrent capabilities.

While the US has been bogged down in Iraq, which had no WMDs, and did not attack us on 9/11, the Russians have first been energy-blackmailing our allies in Europe, and the countries and republics formerly under Communist rule, and now, literally attacking those countries with impunity.

The Russians realize, while Boy Bush is off in Beijing gazing again into Vlad's eyes (nice timing, Vlad!), the US is in no position to counter them.

Some say Ronald Reagan won the Cold War. John McCain and George Bush have been busy losing the Cold War.

This is why John McCain is not fit to lead. He might be a war hero, but he does not know how to defend the United States, if he cannot choose our battles. He failed this test in Iraq. Because in 35 years, he has failed to learn the true lesson of Vietnam - the real cost of wars of choice that do not protect the US.

John McCain. He cannot learn. He cannot lead.”

Georgians must be put in their proper place. Which is a humble neighbor of Russia. Especially in view that the biggest Georgian product ever was a monster named Stalin ( Dzhugashvilii) who destroyed most the achievements of the Soviet Communist revolution.

I have heard that many if not most of Stalin's administrators, those who ran his killing apparatus were of Jewish ethnicity. Is this true? Does anyone know the truth about the ethnicity, religious persuasion of Stalin's officers and secretaries?

If this were true the irony is that under the Soviet system *anti-semitism* was an accepted practice despite all of the official protests to the contrary.

Stalin's administrators were 110% *thugs,* regardless of their ethnic or religious persuasions.

Best keep your perspective clear on the matter.

For those of you tossing scripture about and standing in judgement, how convenient that you never mention Matthew 5:27 & 28

"You have heard that it was said, 'Do not commit adultery.' But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart"

These are words spoken by J E S U S himself!

...yet you seem so comfortable to dismiss them and sit in judgement.

As a student of scripture for over thirty two year, I find you modern day Pharἱsees very disgusting and more than just a little hypocritical.

You people must be idiots. The war to start is a leverage by the United States to battle the economic war going on with the EU and US. Did anyone watch the markets today. Did anyone see how Toyota is slowing production in Europe. Did anyone see how Russia's president tried to make their currency the currency for oil. Did anyone see how Russia blachmailed the EU. If you watch the BBC reports they are for Russia. The USA needs a war between the two to jack our dollar. We were headed for distruction. The EU is going to get what they deserve for trying to wage an economic war with the USA. Many European countries have had treaties with Russia long before US. As for Russia destroying Georgia, Georgia is still in control. Russia has no real army anymore, just weapons. Yes, Iseral is going into Iran, which Iran is backed by Russia. Russia can't afford two wars. Checkmate. Now, how do we stop those back door French and Gemans?

Spot on. Russia is flexing its muscle against weaker neighbors. After years of being devastated by "Western Capitalism", they want revenge. And empire. This is just the latest in moves in "The Great Game".

When Russia pulls this off, they will become bolder in their actions. Also, this will stop NATO expansion on their borders. In addition, Ukraine is being warned by this action. Russian is demonstrating NATO's lack of resolve and America's ineffectiveness on the world stage. Diplomatically and militarily, President Bush and his cronies have compromised America into near impotence in regards to responding to problems around the world.

Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia. Ukraine. Moldova. Belarus. Poland. All are wondering about Russia's intentions right now. America's impotence in responding to such a small crisis in Georgia effectively demonstrates New Russia's power in Europe and the decay of America's power.

I am sure Moscow had the blessing of Bush for this. After all, they are doing nothing different than Bush did. If its ok for bush, its ok for them, right?
And still I can not understand why Edwards affair is taking center stage to this obvious invasion? I guess because its because corporate America, including HUFPO here, can use it to fuel the flames for the GOP and make more useless and meaning less stuff that Rush, beck, and other brainless regurgitating spinsters can spew out into the masses. I can see it now. Obama bad because Edwards had an affair.

Meanwhile, the US, the UK and France are right now sending an enormous joint US-EU naval flotilla into the Persian Gulf. This whole Georgia fiasco could be a set up to distract Russia (China's already distracted by its silly games) while we go in and beat the crap out of Iran.

Looks like W and Cheney are trying to take care of some unfinished business before they leave office. Amazing how they solved the whole post 9/11 anthrax thing after all these years. Don't be surprised if they suddenly "find" Bin Laden -- probably timed between the two conventions to undercut Obama and add a touch of triumphalism to W's and Cheney's speeeches at the GOP shindig.

This is sad and unfortunate that we are willing to fight and risk the deaths of our young soldiers for a war that Israel can wage themselves. We do deplore the idea of Iran getting nuclear weapons. But other countries also have nuclear weapons including Israel. What does that make Israel? Certainly the top dog in the middle east in my opinion.

I think what's happening here is that Israel knows that Boosh is about to leave office and they want to get as much as they can get out of him. We already took care of Iraq and Saddam Hussein for them. Now they want us to wage war against Iran for them as well.

I don't know what the US sees in Israel. They are our friends of course. But it doesn't mean that we fight all of their wars for them.

If we really want to fight terrorism what the US needs to do is to encourage Israel to pursue peace with the Palestinians. They need to start some dialog between both those rival factions and to work on something that they agree on. I believe that the US should take charge of this. But because of the failed Boosh policies in foreign affairs, our country is even more in danger from terrorism.

A few points of history :

Georgia: one of the oldest countries in the world. It can trace it origins to at least 300BC. One of the first countries to become christian (4th century). In late18th century seeked protection by russia from Turks. Instead russia occupies it in early 19th century by force. Separates from russian empire after revolution in 1917. Establishes multi-party democracy. Recognised as independant country by USSR (1920) and Western countries. Invaded by USSR in 1921. After brutal conquest, USSR gave parts of Georgia to Turkey, Russia and Armenia.

Ossetia: One of the areas of Caucasus. From 12th century on the area keeps going in and out of Georgia control. During Russian conquest of Caucasus in 17-19th century allied itself with Russia. At the time of Russian conquest of Georgia in early 19th century , nothern Ossetia was part of Russia and Southern Ossetia was part of Georgia . When Georgia split from russian empire in 1917, the entire Ossetia was left in USSR. After USSR occupied Georgia in 1921, southern ossetia was given back to georgian republic. After Ingush (neighboring area to Ossetia) were viewed as a supporters of Germany in WWII, they were expeled and part of their land was given to north Ossetia which resulted in the Ingush-Northern Ossetia war after break up of USSR in 1991. The most famous terrorist act in russia, attack on the school in Beslan, happened in Northern Ossetia.
