NEW YORK — The colorful Olympics opening night ceremony from Beijing on NBC averaged 34.2 million viewers, making it the biggest television event since the Super Bowl.

It was the biggest audience ever for an Olympic opening ceremony not held in the U.S., and even eclipsed this year's Academy Awards and finale of "American Idol," Nielsen Media Research said on Saturday.

The numbers were all the more impressive since it was a Friday night in August, when many people have better things to do than watch TV. If they do choose to watch TV, the number of options are growing year by year, meaning most television events typically go down in ratings.

The most recent summer Olympics, in Athens four years ago, averaged 25.4 million viewers for its first night, Nielsen said. Sydney in 2000 had 27.3 million viewers.

"It was a magical and memorable spectacle and a great way to start the Beijing Olympics," said Dick Ebersol, chairman of NBC Universal Sports and Olympics.

It was good news for NBC and its advertisers, particularly since there was concern Friday about computer users finding ways to access non-NBC video feeds and watch portions of the ceremony before it appeared on the network. Due to the time difference, NBC aired the ceremony in the eastern U.S. 12 hours after it happened in China.

Instead, the tape delay may have helped NBC, allowing word of mouth to spread about the spell-binding ceremony, which featured an estimated 15,000 cast and crew members, many performing intricate dance moves with images that used Beijing's new stadium as a backdrop.

NBC's Olympics Web site didn't air video of the event before it was shown on TV, but it and many other Web sites did post still pictures. NBCOlympics.com registered 70 million page views on Friday, its heaviest traffic ever.

NBC Universal said it was working with Olympics officials to make sure video of events for which NBC has exclusive U.S. rights are not shown on other Web sites, network spokeswoman Kathy Kelly-Brown said.

Olympic authorities provide rights-holders with technology that prevents its coverage of Olympic events from being seen outside of their country. However, there were reports that the blocking technology didn't work for Germany's ARD network, allowing video to slip out beyond that country's borders.

After opening night, NBC is less concerned about video getting out, at least for the first week of the games. NBC's prime-time for the next week is concentrating on live events like gymnastics and Michael Phelps' bid for swimming immortality. Many other events are shown live on NBC Universal's cable networks or on NBC's Web site.

However, the second week of the games may present NBC with more of a problem. It currently plans to air most track and field events on tape-delay in prime-time, allowing for the possibility that pictures will slip out early.

The opening ceremonies were breathtaking.
NBC coverage did a disservice to this artistic achievement.

Does anyone know if exterior shots of the city are being controlled?

I've had it on pretty much and feel as if I've not left the venue. No exteriors as they take breaks and most often a night shot of the Bird's Nest. I'm looking for views like Athens or Lillihamer (apologies for that spelling, probably).

The opening ceremony was THE best ever, it was brilliant and spectacular, but the coverage by NBC was awful as usual.

Chinese did a great job.

For those bashing China .......... don't forget Bush is borrowing money for his Illegal Invasions from China!

NBC paraded their telephoto sports lenses around in a program designed for the whole rather than the individual..........................................................http://thefiresidepost.com/2008/08/10/the-birds-nest-cradle-of-the-future-video/

Way too many commercials. coverage is too scattered, no coherence to it at all.

NBC needs to show good numbers to keep advertisers happy. Frankly, I don't believe that 34 million people watched most of the opening ceremonies. I watched maybe 10 minutes -- am I included in that 34 million average?

I've given up trying to figure out what will be shown and when. The coverage is clearly rigged for advertising dollars alone, and they hope we'll forget about it by the time the next Olympics rolls around. That's what happened in previous years when the coverage was also mostly from tape...

Their schedule mostly says "multiple sports" for hours and hours on end. Do they really think most people are going to sit around and hope that their favorite sport pops up at a convenient time during these 8 hour broadcasts? Here's hoping that NBC gets what they deserve...

Everybody misses the point. This network (NBC) that always takes cracks at FOX, ABC, etc. is itself the network that sold its soul out to the brutal Chinese regime. So the hypocrisy and double-standards of people like Olbermann and Matthews is showing. They are 'quiet as a mouse'. Come on Keith, for NBC paying a billion dollars to the Chinese, why haven't you made "NBC the worst persons in the world".

In my neighborhood, Chinese take-out places did record ratings, too.

What a spectacular event! I envy the people that got too see it live... Unlike the NBC audience, they were not subjected to yammering network announcers and frequent commercial interruption. Imagine attending a Cirque de Soleil show or a Broadway play and having to listen to two announcers describe what you are seeing in play-by-play. The announcers and the many commercial breaks effectively took me out of the emotional mood the performers were working so hard to create.

It looked amazing. I found it very annoying to listen to Bob and Matt yammering away also.

Every country in the world saw it live, except us. Very disappointing, as usual.

The opening ceremony was unbelieveable. In HD, it was truly amazing. Whoever gets the next games is in real trouble trying to match that performance.

It's amazing what you can do with slave labor.

It's an American tradition. Nike and Wal-Mart only continue it.

Barring all the political crap with China, that opening ceremony was amazing. They definitely brought it. The London games has a lot to live up to.

Very Nice opening ceremony. I liked the drums and large LED screens on the floor and walls.

Also, I am wondering if anyone knows where there is a good TV schedule of events?
I am lost watching this. The TV guide is worthless and so is the listings in the paper and online. I know NBC covers it, but five or six other stations are covering it including TNT, CNBC and others. I need something that shows all the TV venue listings in one list. The time difference is also messing up viewing. I don't know if it is live or record? Any master TV olympic listing out there?

There are few good online maps for the venues. The one on the Olympic site is not that detailed and does not zoom well. The BBC site has one and I found a few others.

I bet you feel like a bonehead right about now, cause Liz said John told her all about it in 2006, while her cancer was in remission and before it came back. The same 2006, when the affair was reportedly began, and ended.

I guess you can't see the forest, for all the trees being in the way, right?? ;)
