MSNBC News:

Sen. Pat Roberts (KS) is now the eighth Republican senator to announce that they will not attend the GOP Convention in St. Paul, Minn., next month.

Roberts spokeswoman told the Topeka Capital Journal today that Roberts will be campaigning that week, finishing up his 105 county statewide tour during the convention week.

Four others who've announced they won't be attending are -- Ted Stevens (AK), Elizabeth Dole (NC), Gordon Smith (OR), and Susan Collins (ME). All are running for re-election and are in close races. (Collins may have the easiest race, but she's never been a close ally of McCain.)

Roberts needs a lengthy appearance before the Senate Judiciary to answer questions about his role in covering up and protecting ideologues connected to 9-11. He acted like a traitor and should be treated like one.

He should stay clear of public places as there are too many Americans who know him well.

Here's the biggest irony of all -- as the Republicans scramble and stumble to get as far away from the Presidential toxic monster that is George W. Bush, it was their Rubber-stamp legislative approval of this President's programs and policies that put the seal on all that stinks in this country right now. They may avoid the convention, but they can't avoid the fact that they are the reason that Bush got away with everything that makes America hate him so much.

And by the way, I watched Senator Roberts on C-span carrying so much water for Bush that he seemed to walk with a slump.

From Kansas City to St. Paul is 5, maybe 6 hours by car. Maybe an hour, maximum 2, by plane. "Staying in my home state to campaign" is the new "retiring to spend more time with my family."

Levibatgirl,,, you would be surprised.

I was a Republican for 34 years,, went to all the events, a Party regular, deeply involved with education, community development, an Eisenhower Republican, with strong Reagan leanings.

Even voted for Nixon in 72,,, (Bowing my head in shame). Little did I know, Nixon’s secret way to end the war in Viet Nam, was the Atomic Bomb. Thank God the Generals of the day talked some sense into Nixon.

It is NEVER,,, all one way or the other,, a black or white thing.

As far as what others claim, of their being no loyal American or Patriotic Democrats,, that is total BS. The Democratic register of the young men that DIED fighting in Viet Nam is over 70%.

What you are seeing is a Vote by SHUN. Shunning, makes the point, without words.

Now, I will share another thing. Should McCain be elected,, these BRAVE Republicans have just sealed their fate, in the GOP,, that I know. What you are witnessing is COURAGE! Pure and Simple.

The loyal Bush-ies and McCain-iacs, the Neo-Con fringe,,, NEVER, NEVER forget!

I am telling you NOW,, you are witness to history,, you are seeing COURAGE, manifest in full display.

The RNC will NEVER forget.

The Neo-Cons,,, Instead of BUILDING America they chose Power,, ultimate POWER and for no other reason than they could.

JMO

All the best

It isn't courage. If they thought there was any chance McCain could win, they'd be there.

Not mentioning a lame duck is a good idea but what about the primetime fool? He is what the convention is for; you remember the guy that said that Put in was the president of Germany? He should be a laugh a minute or for GOP like crying in their Belguim bud beer.

Sen Roberts may have to rearrange his sock drawer(s) in KS & DC. Since mid-westerners are most methodical he could be tied up with that job from now till Sep 10, 2008. Ks people like to be orderly.

This is rich as rich can be. The Republicans are dissing their own convention, and by association McCrashandBurn.

Too bad, so sad. I hope the MSM BLOWS this little tidbit up. (I know, I'm a dreamer.)

eight and counting...i keep saying that these repubs secretly admire Obama but they're afraid to come out of the closet for the sake of their careers. Watch Colin Powell shock the American people and support Obama, and then the rest of them will come out of the closet. Can't wait. hehe

Coward! If you are so ashamed of your party that you won't attend the convention, do something about it: Either start changing your party's policy's so you are no longer ashamed or renounce your party affiliation to either join the opposition or start a new political party. To do otherwise is evidence of pure cowardice.

This coward is skipping the Convention because an Astrologer predicted that he would choke on a piece of stake if he showed up at the Convention. He is staying away for selfish reasons!!!

Republicans are scurrying from the GOP convention faster than a roach runs from light.
