Powell

Former national security adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski tells the Huffington Post that he "expects" Gen. Colin Powell to endorse Barack Obama for president.

Late Wednesday afternoon, the political world skipped a heartbeat when Fox pundit and eminent neoconservative Bill Kristol predicted that former Gen. Colin Powell would endorse Barack Obama, and even potentially speak at the Democratic National Convention.

In response to an emailed question, Brzezinski agreed with Kristol about the endorsement, writing simply: "I sort of expect he [Powell] will."

Though he worked for President Carter, Brzezinski keeps close relations with the "realist" camp of Republican foreign policy heavyweights like Bush 41 adviser Brent Scowcroft, who also worked with Powell. The Huffington Post reported earlier that Scowcroft has decided to stay neutral in the presidential race instead of taking the more expected route and explicitly backing McCain.

UPDATE: A spokeswoman for Powell denies strongly that he will be at either convention, though seems to have stopped short of closing the door entirely on an Obama endorsement.

Out Damn Blot: A Letter to Colin Powell
By Ray McGovern August 15, 2008
http://www.consortiumnews.com/2008/081508a.html
You have said you regret the “blot” on your record caused by your parroting spurious intelligence at the U.N. to justify war on Iraq. On the chance you may not have noticed, I write to point out that you now have a unique opportunity to do some rehab on your reputation.
.....................
Let me suggest that you offer yourself as a witness to help clear the air on these very important issues. This would seem the responsible, patriotic thing to do in the circumstances and could also have the salutary effect of beginning the atonement process for that day of infamy at the Security Council.

If we hear no peep out of you in the coming weeks, we shall not be able to escape concluding one of two things:

(1) That, as was the case with the White House Situation Room sessions on torture, you were a willing participant in suppressing/falsifying key intelligence on Iraq; or

(2) That you lack the courage to expose the scoundrels who betrayed not only you, but also that segment of our country and our world that still puts a premium on truth telling and the law.

Think about it.

With all due respect,

Ray McGovern

Barack Obama and the Democratic Party does NOT need Colin Powell, just like Clarence Thomas is NOT welcome in the African American community. Mr. Powell is welcome to vote for whomever he wants to but he's not doing Senator Obama any favors by voting for or endorsing him. When he sat at that hearing and allowed himself to tell a lie and he knew fully well he was lying, He's Done!

It's not really much of a prediction. it's a yes or no question meaning anyone has a 50% chance of being right. Try predicting something where you have a higher chance of being wrong and I'll be impressed

I suspect Colin Powell stayed with the Bush Adminstration as long as he did because of a sense of duty/responsibility: that said: when he saw a way out...the bellowed out. I won't be so hard as to say that he is an Uncle Tom although his party affliation is perplexing.

His endorsement would be welcomed, I believe...there are still a lot of folk who admire his ethics. Remember he tried to stop Bush from going to war "You break it, you bought it!" statement?

Powell;s star has fallen. Powell should have resigned immediately when he realized he had been used by Cheney and Rumsfeld to sell their illegal war. Not doing so damaged him. At this point Powell's endorsement of either candidate would carry little weight.

Powell knows he commited a great farce when he testified before the United Nations. The whole world was watching, yet only the ignorant believed him. Powell lied to the people of the US and world. Powell lied about "proof" and "evidence" presented on behalf of the Bush Neocon cabal with an agenda for a wastless dirty war. He was instrumental in carrying out the BIG LIE - where People die. Crimes against humanity linger in the ethers of fear. Powell could have kept the "Chenney War" from even starting. "Shock and Awe" followed!
Instead Powell's lies succeeded also in silencing others, those within the aministation who could have, in the very least, been honest and exposed the Neocon conspiracy for what it was -- a domestic covert operation to illegally and fraudulently lead our nation to war!
This blood lust could have been avoided.
Powell's days in public service are over -
He would make a great witness at war crimes trial, however.

Colin Powell wounded by the corrupt Bush regime will probably do the right thing and endorse Barack Obama. I'm sure he doesn't condone all crimes theBushies have commited while he was Secretary of State and after. Powell was against going into Iraq, but was tricked into presenting fraudulent intelligence, to sustantiate Bush and Cheney claims concerning Iraq. He would make an excellent Secretary of defense in Obama's cabinet.

Yea right - "Just following orders." defense didn't work for the Nazis at Nuremberg and it won't work here. Powell ignored those like Scott Ritter who actually knew there were no WMD's and went for fabricated evidence from Chalabi and Curve Ball
Powell would probably be given 20 years in the big house for his role in this international crime.
The only reason ALL these turkeys are not in a Federal prison is the fact the Senate and Congress didn't do their homework either and believed the lies fabricated by bush and his gang of killers. So the result is only those Representatives who did not vote to fraudulently attack Iraq (Kucinich) are the only ones speaking out. The others, Powell included, can't say much since they participated in the conspiracy.
The drawings of the so called mobile bio labs were of drawings of US equiptment by the University of Maryland.

General Colin Powell is one of the finest military men this nation has ever had. He has the distinct honorable record of HAVING SERVED this country.

His endorsement will have a TREMENDOULSY POWERFUL IMPACT ON THIS ELECTION>

I HOPE HE ENDORSES OBAMA!!

Hey lady49, put a cork in it - Once Colin Powell started "carring water" for bush and his neocon pals, his credibility went in the crapper. I knew there were no WMD's in Iraq as he made his UN speech. He said he was conned by bush. Well if he isn't any smarter than I am - I wouldn't want his endorsement - If he endorses Obama, to me, it is another nail in Obamas election coffin.

Regardless of the UN speech an endorsement provides a ready response to everybody who sends an anti-obama e-mail, especially one featuring a neocon's assertion of not being qualified. Just throw it back in their face.

I know it won't change any minds. But it sure is fun watching them spit and sputter.

It is so pathetic that people refer to the UN Speech as "Powell's lie".

THE REPUBLICANS lied to the UN, the American People, and the rest of the world about the Iraq War. Yet people are calling this Powell's lie?

The Secretary of State does not set American foreign policy - that's the President's job. The Secretary of State serves the President and noone else. In his UN speech, he presented the flawed intelligence that the President, Rumsfeld and Cheyney deliberately handed to him.

Powell is an honorable American soldier who followed the orders of the Commander in Chief. He repectfully resigned from his position after realizing that he was being used as the face of the Republicans illegal and unjust war conspiracy.

And for the people who think that Powell's potential endorsement of Obama is based strictly on the fact that they are both African-American, it's time for you to realize how much damage the Republicans have done to this country over the past 8 years.

Colin Powell is an American who loves his country. He had the bad luck of being appointed Secretary of State by the worst President in American History.

Powell is no better than Bush-and a coward for not speaking out sooner and louder.
His endorsement of Senator Obama...if it comes...will probably help a bit.
-But I support Obama because he represents a move AWAY from hollow men like Tom Powell.
