London's Daily Mail reports on Janos Baranyai, the Hungarian weightlifter who turned his elbow inside out in a horrific display in Beijing Wednesday:

This is the moment Hungarian weightlifter Janos Baranyai's first Olympics ended in agony when he dislocated his right elbow in the ugliest moment yet of the Olympic weightlifting competition.

Baranyai was trying to snatch 148kg in his third lift in the men's 77kg division, when his elbow popped out of its socket.

No longer able to support the weight of the barbell, his right forearm bent backward. The 24-year-old Hungarian fell to the floor in shock, shaking and crying out in pain.

Hungary's coaching staff and competition officials rushed to Baranyai's aid as he lay trembling on the floor, his arm limp and twisted out of position.

As ugly as it is he will be fine....The word is he will be back competing early next year. Dislocation...very painful...but nothing torn or broken.

My heart goes out to the guy and I am glad to hear that he was not seriously injured. I guess the silver lining to this is that this kind of injury, as in this case, is never as serious or permanent as one would think after seeing it take place.

For the record, this is the very first unpleasant event I have seen reported on Huffpo that at least one person hasn't tried to pin on Obama.

you cracked me up with that last line!

Huffpo seems to confuse being talked about with being worth talking about. Basking in someone's pain is FOX-worthy. Get your heads out of the p00phole, there's a lot of world worth seeing.

On the bright side, I'm sure he's on so much morphine or other opiate now that not only is he not in pain, he's probably feeling pretty good. Poor guy though. Hope he fully recovers.

Huffpo turning one man's suffering into front-page news... The New York Post would be proud. Last week you quoted the National Enquirer as a source of this non-story with John Edwards. The quality of this web site is inconsistent at best. And you're different from the other media outlets because...wait, why is that again?

I'm thinking maybe Bush had something to do with this...

Oh, of course. And I'm sure you noticed the "black helicopter" in the background. Ha!

This is precisely why I refuse to watch weightlifting competitions live. I have heard of such injuries occuring far more than I would like and my admittedly weak stomach would not be able to take the sight. I hope this young man makes a comfortable recovery but it puts into perspective the relative pointlessness of pushing the human body to these limits. I agree that physical fitness it tremendously important and the olympics are good to inspire young ones to get out and be active but I think there is a point where we are simply pushing too hard.

It looks bad but the guy is hung like a yak and has 6 pack abs. He'll be ok.
12:48 PM on 08/14/2008
The amazing thing is, half the guys in Hungary match that description. God, I love vacationing there...
01:38 PM on 08/14/2008
whoa, whoa, whoa ,whoa ,whoa

i don't want to hear about your attraction to hungarian yaks

And then the fact that the weights bounced off his back on the way down. That had to hurt, too.
09:19 AM on 08/14/2008
Ugh! Will Huffington Post please take that GD picture off your site! i can't stand it!!!

It happened to me when I was 12 during a wrestling match. It was not painful at all.
The doctor at the ER pulled my forearm, twisted it back in place then put my arm in a cast for a month, followed by a 3 month therapy to straighten up my whole arm from the rigid right angle position of the cast.
I this case, I thing the weightlifter pulled a few muscles too which made it so painful.

HERE'S THE LATEST ON JANOS...

Janos Baranyai was carried off the platform and taken by ambulance to a China-Japan Friendship Hospital in Beijing.

His injury looks really awful, but no bones were broken and his dislocated elbow was re-seated while he was sedated. His arm looks normal now and he is recuperating. It could take several months to heal completely.

If there's a light side to this, it's that the competative Janos is doing fine and watching the rest of the weightlifting competition on TV from a his bed in the hospital according to Tamas Feher, the Hungarian weightlifting federation chief.

Oh that is brutal. Hate to see a young person in peak physical condition damage themselves this way. This is what happens when we humans push the envelope to extreme levels. Screw the gold medal, just give the poor kid his arm back!
