NEW YORK — Fewer Americans are reading newspapers and are instead getting their news online, but television remains the leading source of news in the country, according to a survey released Sunday.

Not surprisingly, younger people tend to get more of their news on the Internet, while older folks use traditional media such as television and newspapers, the Pew Research Center's biannual survey on news consumption habits said.

Pew said the results show an increasing shift toward online news consumption, but that there is now a sizable group of a more engaged, sophisticated and well-off people that use both traditional and online sources to get their news.

The Pew researchers referred to these people as "integrators," and says they account for 23 percent of those surveyed, spending the most time with the news on a typical day.

"Like Web-oriented news consumers, integrators are affluent and highly educated. However they are older, on average, than those who consider the Internet their main source of news," the survey said.

It is this group that advertisers typically like to target, which helps explain why newspaper publishers have seen sharp declines in ad revenues as spending shifts online.

Pew found that the largest group of news consumers _ 46 percent of those polled _ have a "heavy reliance" on television for their news at all times of the day. This group is the oldest, with a median age of 52, and least affluent, with 43 percent unemployed. They are unlikely to own a computer or go online for news.

Overall, among those who get some of their news from TV, fewer are watching the 6:30 broadcast network newscasts, and instead opting for cable news sources such as CNN or Fox News Channel. CNN's audience is now majority Democratic, while 39 percent of Fox News viewers are Republicans, 33 percent Democrats, with the remainder independent or didn't specify.

The group that relies most on the Internet for news is the youngest at a median age of 35. It is also the smallest, at 13 percent of those polled. Fewer than half of them watch television news on a regular basis. Eighty percent of this group has a college education and they are twice as likely to read an online newspaper than a printed version.

The emergence of this group and the shift among integrators online led to an overall decline in the percentage of people who said they read a newspaper the day before, to 34 percent from 40 percent two years ago, the researchers found. That is also reflected in a shift in the industry that has seen circulation figures slip in recent quarters.

The beneficiary of less print newspaper consumption has been other online news sources, with about 25 percent of the people surveyed saying they go to an Internet site for news at least three times a week. That's up from 18 percent in the 2006 survey.

Pew found that consumers of online news tend to be more educated than those who get their news from traditional sources, with 44 percent of college graduates saying they read news online every day. Just 11 percent of those who topped out with a high school education go online for news.

About one-third of those younger than 25 said they get no news on a typical day, up from about 25 percent in 1998.

The survey was conducted by Princeton Survey Research Associates International. It polled 3,615 adults 18 years or older by telephone between April 30 and June 1, and has a margin of error of 2 percentage points.

Having spent the first eight years of my life in the U.K. [1946-1954] the only sources of news were the radio and newspaper. Upon immigrating to North America we, of course, were introduced to television and news coverage. Now, with the increasing dominance of the internet I am entering the period where I am increasingly using the internet for news. I believe that this is the way of the future however I definitely hope that books will still be a tactile thing.

I now refer to CNN as_Commercials, Not News_with Wolf telling us that if we stay tuned he will “reveal the whole story right after this break.” Does he truly think I am breathlessly waiting to learn that a FedEx truck overturned on a Texas Interstate and its contents are strewn all across the median. Geez, that ain’t news it’s just “fluff”.

JEREMY HERRON: "The group that relies most on the Internet for news is the youngest at a median age of 35."

I didn't realize my median age was so young. Like Jack Benny, I have claimed to be 39, despite being--mostly--somewhat older.

Except for "The Daily Show," I get all my news on the Internet, including the online version of "The Seattle Times," for local/regional news.

When I first had cable TV in the 80s and early 90s, CNN and CNN Headline News were the best sources of news available—real news, gathered by thousands of journalists, presented in an intelligent manner. Ah, the “good old days,” when the news was presented as news (and MTV really was Music TV, rather than Garbage TV).

CNN may still have the journalists and stringers in the field, but the on-screen presentation has devolved into entertainment or—the kindest interpretation—“infotainment.” Even the CNN website has succumbed to the disease of turning information into entertainment. Sad—really, really sad.

I can’t judge who was at the forefront of the change from news to entertainment on TV, but the cancer has completely metastasized in America—every network, every local station, every cable channel is diseased.

Television is a very manipulative medium. The pictures and narrative can easily distort a story. Combine that with corporate ownership, and television is probably the worst source for news.

Reading is the only way to get reliable information. The journalistic standards for newspapers and magazines are still the toughest&mdash;which is why a reporter like Judith Miller does so much harm. She taints the reputation of the reporters who are doing good work.

But the big stories are always broken in print. The New York Times, The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair, Harpers, The Washington Post.

Reading is fundamental.

Reading is indeed mandatory.
That 'big stories' and 'journailistic standards' part is baloney.
Okay. Malarkey.

Older readers (I'm 65) also avoid the main steam media ... because it lacks integrity in its reporting. I no longer view ANY of the TV networks for "news".

Most of us tune in local news for weather, community occurances but find that as far as "journalistically" reportings to be pablum from the newswires that ALL on air in print use more often than not , find when flicking thru channels or pages, THE SAME STORY/REPORT, same pictures/video clips are what is repeatedly shown/presented. The difference in each, on air, voice inflection/raise of eyebrow/etc for emphasis to slant one way or another in accord with CORPORATE design masters who hold control which btw, is but 5 major corporations and lol, defintely NOT liberally bent but know good "marketing" , know such wails drives one segment or another they market to. Few NEWs organization have staff of own, most outsourced to such as AP, few send staff to cover in depth, when done but to "dramatize" as IF giving inside analysis /report. Tis a sad state in these critical times more than ever befor, KNOWLEDGE of what is what is critically important when as citizens make OUR decisions such as which candidates we could/should support to better OUR greater common good..instead, pablum, propagandic fluff marketed as valuable in making such determinations. Its how we got snookered supposedly supporting the error of invading Iraq...A true free press reporting factuals is critical to maintaining a workable democracy, instead we have been shim/shammed/scammed with too much utter propaganda therewith remain quite far too UN-informed consequently, we've been rolled over and over and over !!!

Young people have never seen a real news broadcast. For years they've given us nothing but manipulative drivel that's massaged to elicit a cheap emotional response, or to promote what's best for Disney or G.E. It wasn't that long ago that news stories weren't given names and tinkling-piano theme music and called "breaking news" for 10 straight days. The Olympics used to be authentic and enjoyable too. The Beijing Olympics is as over-processed and fake as a Twinkie. So is the evening news. It's bad for you. Don't watch.

I'm in Obama's generation and I've recommended the Huffington Post to everyone I know. ESPECIALLY my university age kids, nephews, and nieces who in turn have recommended it to their friends. It surpasses the accuracy and completeness of MSM by FAAAAAAAAAAR. I would hate for them to make the MISTAKE at relying on MSM to shape their view of events and the world. That is why WE are where we are now. It is time for CHANGE. Huffington Post is part of it!

Go Huff!

Exactly. For all the people who bash the print media, deservedly many times, many of the stories on here come from the ground work done by them.

It is a paradox. But sites like Truthout and Huff Post cull the newspapers and networks for important and truthful stories. The best standards of journalism still rest with the major news outfits, but often the stories that matter most are buried. Both Truthout and Huff Post are building their own staff of journalists, and at some point will probably do their own investigative reporting. The Real News is another outlet that follows this model, only with video. Their goal is to build a viewer supported cable news network.

There isn't much reliable reporting out there. Democracy Now, Bill Moyers, and Frontline are the outfits I rely on. But I find this site and Truthout invaluable for screening out the noise and digging out important stories.

People, let's make something very clear: HUFFPO IS **NOT** A NEWS SOURCE. They link to the MSM for news coverage, all they provide is a bunch of COMMENTATORS (bloggers) --many of whom I happily ignore-- and our own comments, filtered by the thought police. I come to huffpo to read and write comments, I do not rely on huffpo for news coverage, simply because there is none. There are alternative news sources available on the net, and I mean **REAL** sources with ORIGINAL news content and not just collections of MSM links interspersed with the ramblings of someone who tries to lecture you on how smart he/she is. Unfortunately, every time I tried to post links to these sites, huffpo either didn't post the message or scrubbed it soon after. Oh yes, censorship in China is soooo bad...

I'm seeing a pattern here on HuffPost: The folks who run it love to tout the decline of newspapers. I get it that more and more people are getting their news online - but what this article doesn't say is what those Web sites are. My guess is the vast majority of Web traffic belongs to local/national newspaper sites and news aggregate sites. I'd also say newspaper Web sites are gaining ground in Web traffic. An example: Azcentral (The Arizona Republic in Phoenix) is the most visited news Web site in that state. I enjoy HuffPost, but it's beginning to seem arrogant in light of this transitional phase the media is going through - namely in newspapers. It's funny, though, that the vast majority of content on HuffPost comes from newspapers and the AP. Looks like newspapers are going to be just fine - they just need to figure out how to make money off content suckers like HuffPost and other bloggers.

mmm, have you really checked out print papers recently ? or noted their announcements of staff cuts or IF while perusing noted decine of news reportings and thou still maintaining ad s for revenue, those too are in decline and signally further $$$ losses which indicate more cuts to come. Flick thru the channels and note, most of their reportings differ little to nil, same vid clips, quite often , barely a rewrite of the scripted "report" from one channel to the next or in print..just positoning differently in lineups..and that done to lineup with whichever corporate master is pulling their strings to promote whichever stance is deemd most advantageous to the corporation/etc. Fewer books printed, fewer papers or magazines printed and many seem unaware , there are a goodly majority of folks who are NOT digitally wired to access such so a large portion go tally without.

It won't be long before MSM goes the way of the eight track. And they should, because they have turned news into entertainment filled with spin. I was alive when CNN began and it looks like I will be alive when it ends. Can't wait!!

I'm 52. I stopped watching network news because they have proven themselves untrustworthy and willing to mislead viewers in the name of corporate expediency. My father ran two television stations, so I have a bit of a clue as to how it works, and with, what, five or six corporations now owning all national media there is little chance of heading back towards the unbiased truth without a major revolution.
While there are many immature viewpoints trying to masquerade as hard-biting and credible journalism (it's obvious who they are if you're over 30), the saving grace of the internet is the many eyes watching and commenting on the state of the world. This allows a person to cull enough to figure out what might actually be going on, and indeed, there are more and more perceptive and enlightening commentators each day featured on blogs and web sites.
As far as traditional television and MSM journalists - they can rot in hell for being so ready to sell out a sacred trust in favor of a fat paycheck. Most of them have ZERO credibility with me. I'd like to see some more Bill Moyers-style reporting, so we can call the SOB's who've been jacking us around for so long called to justice. OK, I'm off the soapbox...

Ever since faux news instigated the theft of the 2000 election as we watched all the other corporate news sources followed like unethical sheep, I have lost all faith in the hacks of MAIN STREAM Media. In 2003, not ONE network called foul on the lies spewed forth by the bush white house. Heck, even the NY Times cozied up to the murdering liars within this current group of traitors in the RNC, so there is not a single traditional avenue of NEWS I would call believable.

The Internet offers a wide choice of outlets from which I can personally vet for truthfulness. I go all over the world's media in order to find something like honesty. Sometimes I get lazy and stop here at the Huff-Post. The good news is that I have never been disappointed yet by this site.

My eyes have been opened now and I will never be complacent in giving my trust to another NEWS organization ever again. As Americans, we all have been burned. And, burned badly I might add. As such, we all need to be twice shy before ever giving our trust to any company owned news source.

Those who forget the past are doomed.......

Peace out!!
