Smart Car

Stuttgart - For most of its 10-year history, Daimler's (DAI) Smart car division has had a reputation for making small cars that lose big money. In 2005 and 2006, Stuttgart-based Daimler recorded more than $3 billion in restructuring costs for the division that produced the diminutive two-seater. Frustrated execs at one point vowed to sell the division or kill the quirky vehicle if they couldn't fix the chronic money loser.

Turns out the Smart may simply have been ahead of its time. Suddenly, Smart sales are soaring, even in the U.S., where the brand has been available since January. Smart USA has sold more than 14,000 cars in the U.S.--about double what Daimler expected--and there is a yearlong waiting list. Worldwide, Smart sales are up 57% this year, to 81,300 vehicles, and Daimler has added shifts at its factory in Hambach, France. Daimler doesn't disclose results for Smart separately, but analysts expect operating earnings of about $75 million on sales of $1.5 billion. The 5% margin compares to about 8% for Mercedes cars as a whole.

STATUS SYMBOL

Gas prices only provide a partial explanation for the Smart's surge. True, the Smart, with a three-cylinder engine and colorful plastic body panels, gets great mileage. At 41 mpg on the highway, the Smart is the most fuel-efficient nonhybrid gasoline car on American roads. A diesel version (not available in the U.S.) gets 71 mpg.

But Smart buyers aren't your average penny-pinchers. Many are affluent, design-conscious folks who have seen Smarts during trips to Europe and own at least one other car. To Daimler's surprise, only 5% of U.S. customers choose the $11,590 base model, instead ordering spiffier versions such as the $16,590 convertible. Though some drivers say the Smart feels like a mouse among elephants on the highway, Ron Moreau, a 74-year-old Williamsburg (Va.) resident, says his two Lexus models have hardly left the driveway since he bought a $16,800 Smart Passion in July. "You don't want to be picking your nose while you're driving the car, because everyone's looking," he says.

My doubts were roadworthiness... it never looked like it could take a curve safely at any speed. After a vacation to Europe a few weeks ago, we were passed with startling regularity. Either the cars are designed for high speed curves or the drivers are bat guano, I don't know which. But when you are doing 85 and get passed on the inside of a curve... something's happening I don't understand.

And 70 mpg for the diesel... come on down! But I do wish it weren't from the brain of Mercedes Benz. I don't have much faith in American designers where economy is concerned.

You couldn't take it on vacation because you would have to leave the family at home. May be you could tie them on top, of course that would lower your gas mileage.

I can't even afford the smart car at the price it cost to make it.

One thing about the smart car. That would be the end of carpooling.

I had a 1965 Datsun 410 - one of the first cars Datsun (now Nissan) ever imported into the US.

Probably a bad link but....

It got 40 mpg until struck from behind by a semi trailer.... ouch! Turned that tiny sucker into the tinier, very first, Smart Car!

I had a Simca best car I ever owned. Rear engine front wheel drive in 1968. As long as it didn't drag the snow it would climb a tree.

Look at the size of that thing. It looks like it was squashed. Just wait until it get in a head on collision with the Hummer.

The biggest sales pitch going for the behemoth-mobiles is survivability. They are like ten ton cannon balls flying down the road. Those battering-ram drivers should be held libel because they are no different than lethal weapons on our streets.

Until they roll over. Statistically they don't have the kind of safety record people think they do.

I'm also surprised the gas millage isn't all that great. That thing should be getting 60 mpg. I'd rather ride a scooter for errands close to the house.

I'm trying this again only because when I posted this the first time it was found to be unsuitable for consumption on HuffP.

I drive a Prius, which gets around 50mpg on the highway and 45 in town. It can seat up to five people, and is completely competitive on the road, size-wise, speed-wise, etc. The problem with the Smart Car is that it is built by Mercedes, which has one of the poorest quality reputations in the auto world. Next to Land Rover, they are worst. I have a friend who is a Lemon Law attorney, and most of his cases are for Mercedes products. Once you get over the "cute" factor of the Smart Car and really look at it, you'd be much better of getting a Prius, a Civic Hybrid, or another smaller gas-only car like a Honda Fit or Toyota Yaris. The Smart Car, for all of it's totally compromised size, should get MUCH better mileage than it does. I guarantee you that if Honda or Toyota built a car of this size, they would get 60 - 70 mpg, PLUS you'd get unassailable quality. This is the I-Phone of cars - and not much bigger than one either.

As a Benz driver and Merc enthusiast, can I just say that I've never heard such blasphemy in my life!
The 3 pointed star is synonymous with quality. Although the M Class SUV's have had many problems - but they were built in the US and not at the Stuttgart plant, so go figure.

Hate to burst your bubble. Just check out ANY quality ratings in the auto industry. Mercedes is near the bottom on all of them. I have owned one and they are wonderful cars to drive. I've also owned many VW's and Audis. I was german car snob. But no longer. But by nearly every measure Mercedes has quality problems throughout all their lines. The Japanese cars, although not as fantastic to drive (with the exception of the new Infinitis - which are terrific) are simply miles beyond the European and American cars in quality. Quality is not defined by how perfectly they seem when they are new. Quality is defined by the service issues that arise over the life of the car. The sometimes boring Toyotas and Hondas are generally bulletproof. That's my real-world experience.

The older Mercedes were pretty bulletproof but I've the newer ones are prone to electrical problems.
