I want to know why Al Gore uses as much energy in his Tennessee home as 11 average US households.
He doesn't.
His home, which was built in the 30s, has been retrofitted extensively to make it a far greener consumer of energy. It is a large home, and consequently will be using more energy than a smaller home (like the average US home) but it uses far less than equivalent larger homes do. Gore also buys carbon offset credits.

A very appropriate point. All Gore has done since leaving office has been very commendable. His environmental contributions are iimmense, no doubt. But there still remains the cloud of Gore's support for NAFTA during his VP role under Clinton. Gore has never repudiated "Free Trade" ( which American Labor rightly views as being akin to unilateral disarmament). I don't think it would be a good thing if Obama got too cozy with a possible corporatist, even a popular one. And for God's sake, keep Hilliary at a distance!!

Those qualifications are offered by Caroline Kennedy too, and ever since I read that Michael Moore is putting her out there for VP I haven't been able to dismiss the idea.
I think that Gore is probably THE senior statesman, other than perhaps Carter, that will actually strive to mentor and lift up Obama. I believe that there is a grand value in not only honoring your elders, but having elders that acknowledge your propensities and advise potential snares.
We need elders that are not threatened by talent. We need leaders that are not tone deaf to advice.
