Update: Keith Olbermann had Rachel Maddow on "Countdown" Tuesday night to celebrate and discuss the news. In the clip, Rachel said that the show will discuss politics and weird news — like stories on the Iraqi national soccer team and domestic crimes committed by naked men — and that she will remain on Air America.

Watch below:

Original Post: Rachel Maddow will replace Dan Abrams as host of the 9PM hour on MSNBC, the New York Times' Bill Carter reports. Just last month in a Times article by Jacques Steinberg, MSNBC president Phil Griffin declared Maddow "at the top" of a "very short list" for those who should have their own show, though at the time he said he "[didn't] know when" that would be. As Carter reports, the final stretch of the 2008 election season will be Maddow's debut as the host of her own MSNBC show:

Just in time for the closing rush of the presidential election, MSNBC is shaking up its prime-time programming lineup, removing the long-time host -- and one-time general manager of the network -- Dan Abrams from his 9 p.m. program and replacing him with Rachel Maddow, who has emerged as a favored political commentator for the all-news cable channel.

The moves, which were confirmed by MSNBC executives Tuesday, are expected to be finalized by Wednesday, with Mr. Abrams's last program on Thursday. After MSNBC's extensive coverage of the two political conventions during the next two weeks, Ms. Maddow will begin her program on Sept. 8.

MSNBC is highlighting the date, 9/8/08, connecting it to the start of the Olympics on 8/8/08, as a way to signal what the network's president, Phil Griffin, said "will be the final leg of the political race this year." He added, "We making that Rachel's debut."

Mr. Abrams, who is well liked at MSNBC, is expected to remain at both that network and at NBC News, where he is the chief legal correspondent. He will also serve as an anchor during some of MSNBC's daytime coverage, as well as a substitute host on NBC's "Today" show, Mr. Griffin said.

The last broadcast of Abrams' "Verdict" will air Thursday.

Abrams, the network's former General Manager, told the Times that he understood the decision.

"Putting my general manager's hat back on, considering where the network is right now, it is actually the right call," he said.

Almost immediately, Keith Olbermann took to DailyKos to celebrate the news, brag about his involvement in the decision — "Yes, I had something to do with it," he wrote — and remind readers that though Maddow's rise at the network was quick ("less than five months between first paid appearance and own show"), his was quicker ("I believe I still hold the MSNBC record: I came back to guest host for three days in 2003 and 39 days later I had a contract to do the 8 PM show.").

RACHEL, I WISH YOU WELL. I ALSO HOPE TO SEE DAN ABRAMS IN THE FUTURE. AS A MODERATE, INDEPENDENT VOTER AND VIEWER, PLEASE ATTEMPT TO KEEP YOUR POLITICAL COMMENT "FAIR AND BALANCED." AFTER YEARS OF WATCHING CHRIS AND KEITH, I NO LONGER CHOOSE TO WATCH THEM GIVEN THEIR OBVIOUS OBAMA BIAS. I TRUST YOU WILL NOT BECOME ANOTHER BLOVIATING, ZOMBIE FOR SEN. OBAMA.

So for all the criticisim everyone here at huffington does about Cnn and Fox news that hires bloviators MSNBC falls right in line and does the same thing.

Well, good luck, although with air america not turning out to be the wind fall folks backing it had predicted, I predict MSNBC will shuffle things around again here soon and still come up short in the ratings.

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! Whatever corporate god gave this spot to Rachel Maddow is a genius! She has EVERYTHING it takes and wow!!! Her show is PACKED with information, enthusiasm, excellent guests--AND SHE DOESN'T INTERRUPT THEM like every other "host" on TV! I LOVE RACHEL MADDOW!! I have not watched ANYTHING in years like I watch this show. PLEASE KEEP HER ON THE AIR!! SHE IS A BREATH OF FRESH AIR in a stagnant, stinky room full of idiots (except you, Olbermann!) Rachel Maddow is to FOX as fresh air is to rush's smelly cigar smoke. FINALLY, a smart, informed host to counter the blather and lies of FOX. THANK YOU AGAIN!!!

If one more guests starts an answer to a question with the word "absolutely" I am going to scream. Every guest on Countdown starts each reply with this word becasue they already agree with Keith on every issue. Absolutely they do. It's boring TV-don't fall into this oh-so-predicatable format, Rachel. You have the smarts to counter any neocon that comes your way. Can't say the same for Mr Olbermann. Keith is a light weight in the politifcal arena and I'm afraid idiots like Oreily or god-forbid Coulter could chew him up. And Limbaugh? Rush has chunks of guys like Olbermann in his stool.

Rachel Maddow is already out pulling Olbermann in critical age demographics (24-55)--Google 'MSNBC TV ratings' to confirm--she is definitely worth keeping an eye on and will swap time slots with KO before the year is out....best advice to Keith: grab a job on HBO while you still have some market value, dude. We still need your voice, but just not outside the asylum. And one more thing-those voices you hear-they're right.

Rach

Great show last night-sober based views without the emotional hestria typical on Countdown. I bet you swap time slots with Keith in less than 6 months-assuming he's still around. Go girl!

Rachel - Go Girl and get those neo-cons. You and Keith O need to do something about airhead talk show hosts. We have a few of those in the Dallas market that curse and rant about you and KO. This guy Mike Gallagher is such a racist and a narcissist, that someone needs to take him off the air. I have contacted my local newspaper to air my views, but have drawn blank. While I don't want you or Keith O to waste any airtime to slap this rascal on his wrist or someplace else, I am open to any suggestion to get this guy of the air. Wish you all the luck. I am in love with you!!

rocky start...more ideas and counter proposals to neocon policies and less personal attacks would help-give us an intellectual reason to love you, not the emotional pull that KO relies upon ...back up opinions with facts facts facts and then entertain us with news you can't use...go girl!

Oh boy! A Katie Couric moment for MSNBC. I always surfed away from Olberman whenever Maddow was on or on a panel so now I have to find something else to do after Olberman.

It was bad enough during the primaries when Olberman crawled so far up Obama's posterior that I couldn't stand watching him any longer (and I support Obama), but he'd bring this bit o' fluff on to gush more over his enthusiasm than the candidate himself.

I can't wait until tonight! I'm so happy for Rachel! She's a prominent LGBT analyst, and it's so exciting for a gay pundit to be able to have her own show. I hope it's feisty, energetic and interesting, and that she will continue this rise in her career.

Thrilled about Rachel, also sad about Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann. I don't quite get it. I strain to hear ANY news that is not biased in favor of the Right, yet when you have a couple of guys that are left-leaning, they are removed. What about removing Rush Limbaugh, etc.? Even ABC has been a thinly-veiled right-wing conspiracy for the past several months. Are we just going to lie down and roll over for the establishment and corporate-owned media? Good luck, Rachel. And don't worry, they won't change you. Stay true!

Welcome Rachael to the world of media comentators. Please, please get the "democrat" party to send in some pitbull commentators. Today, Chris Matthews tried his best to get Steve McMahon to land a few punches on the Republicans. McMahon repeatedly failed to hit home & tie the abuse of power to Palin. Chris tried to "guide" him.....her positions on the extreem right, anti-abortion, anti-evolution, pro creationism, etc. Check it out see the tape....we're going to lose if we keep this up.

Also what's happening with Todd Palin & the Alaska Independence Party? Nobody's talking about this.......& what about the money Sarah kept when the bridge deal fell through!

We have to link McCain's decision on Palin as his poor decision making & lack of judgement
