Sen. John W. Warner (R-Va.) said today that Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.) may be able to carry Virginia if he selects Gov. Timothy M. Kaine as his running mate, but predicted adding Kaine to the ticket would hurt Democrats nationally.

"I think he has been quite an effective governor in many areas, but at this point in time it is hard to see how he would bring strength to the ticket in the national security area, which I think the American public will be looking for in this election," said Warner, who is retiring after a 28-year career in the Senate, where he became an authority on defense issues. "But it may well be that his achievements as governor, which I think are considerable, and the high regard in the state for him could offset that."
