Reid Lieberman

Senator Joseph Lieberman's decision to speak at the upcoming Republican National Convention is being met with deep consternation among Democrats and is compelling leadership to reassess his political assignments and future within the party.

"[Majority Leader Harry] Reid has indicated that he will take another look at things after the election specifically regarding committee assignments," said a well-connected Hill aide.

It has long been expected that Connecticut Independent Democrat's antics and surrogacy on behalf of John McCain would endanger his standing among Democrats. But for the most part, Reid and company have shied away from discussing whether Lieberman would retain his chairmanship for the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. Asked in May if Lieberman's position was at risk, the Senate Majority Leader said "no." Later he said, without elaboration, that such a scenario was possible but very unlikely.

"He is non-committal now, said the Hill aide on Wednesday, describing it as a shift towards a more hard line stance. "He is going to take a look at things after the election."

The possibility that Lieberman would address the GOP convention has been kicked around for weeks. Democratic activists have responded by pinning for the party to kick its 2000 vice presidential nominee out of the caucus. But with the party's Senate majority at a scant one vote, it seemed nearly impossible that they would sever ties. And so, leadership, advisers, and former Lieberman supporters have been forced to swallow their pride and stomach his behavior.

"The party is clearly in a tough place," said Steve Rabinowitz, a long time Democratic media consultant. "I used to personally be there. It was a dilemma for me when Joe lost his primary for Senate and I am a big partisan Democrat. But I sucked it up and pretended to support him in the general election and he promised a million times that he would caucus with the Democrats that he would stay a Democrat. This thing, that he is supporting McCain because he is a friend -- there are a million Senators who are good best friends and drinking buddies with folks form the other side of the aisle -- they never endorse them for president, campaign for them, and trash their opponents. He really lost me with the McCain endorsement. And now I am done personally."

On Wednesday it was reported that Lieberman would be speaking at the GOP convention on Monday evening -- on the first day, but not in the most prestigious slot. The Senator is expected to continue his sharp advocacy on behalf of McCain. Whether he attacks Barack Obama's patriotism, which he has done in the past, could go a long way in determining how the Democratic Party handles the situation going forward.

The only Senate Majority Leader in US history to declare a war lost. Any other country, he probably would have been tried for high treason. Luckily, our soldiers and commanders ignored this coward and fought on to victory.

genserici3, this is America. We NEVER attack a country that has not attacked us. George W. Bush and John McCain INVADED Iraq under the false pretense of wmd. The "con" was all about oil and control. We are now in 2 wars. It takes more than being a bully to be a real man. If John McCain is elected, you can count on World War III visa vi Russia. McCain is just itching to bomb them. His "tough" talk is not what is required or needed at this time to calm those tensions. That is adding fuel to the fire and angering that country. If I have my facts correct, we will need Russia to help with Iran and their ambitions. If John McCain pisses them off, then what happens to our country? We have no troops to fight another war, and no economy to sustain such. America is in serious trouble. All I can ask is that Americans really pay attention to the election and vote for what is in America's best interest, as well as your own. Being homeless is no joke. But for the GRACE OF GOD, there go I.

Who would convict someone for telling the truth?

Oh yeah. Republicans.

The photograph of Reid holding his chin is misleading. It implies that Reid is thoughtful. On the contrary, Reid hardly thinks.

Reid is emblematic of the democratic party's weakness and ineffectiveness. The democratic party has not a single statesman left, no champion of the people, no spokesman for the middle class (what's left of it). The democrats have joined the republicans and both are now wholly owned subsidiaries of corporate America.

Reid's lack of leadership to remove Lieberman from the causus and chair assignments further reinforces the weakness of the Senate Majority Leader role in matters beyond this turncoat. It just reinforces the set backs (and failures) of the majority since February 2007. Reid may have to step down as a result of his failures. Obama can't afford him quarterbacking his initiatives in 2009.

Harry,

Please call Nancy and see if you can get your balls back off the shelf. Then loose the Liebermen and resign yourself. Admit to yourself that you are innefective and get the hell out of the way so we might get out country back.

The Dems will do nothing because if Holy Joe goes over to the GOP then the Dems lose control of the Senate and they all have to move out of their offices into smaller digs.

They'll whine a little, and they will "consider" and "reconsider" doing something to Joe, but do not expect the Dems to put principle over power.

Lieberman is the most powerful man in the Senate.

Yep.......for a couple of months more. But he will pay dearly for that deal he made with the devil.

Move over Harry... you're in Hillary's seat.
1st order of business, kick Lieberman out. The Dems will have picked up enough seats that they don't need his limp fearmongering around anymore.

The leaders are elected by the Senators of their party.

That will NEVER happen to Mrs. Bill Clinton.

If the Dems had completely antagonised Joe, and he had declared for the GOP, the Dems would have then lost their majority in the Senate. "Growing a pair" isn't the same thing as thinking with the wrong brain.

If Lieberman had been honest and run as a Republican in 2006, he would have lost the election

Bear in mind that when Reid takes away an assignment, it has to be given to someone else. Considering there isn't going to be anything happening between now and November, maybe it's not such a bad idea to see who wins (or loses) in the elections before trying to figure out who should take over Lieberman's positions.

At a time when the democrats need unity - why instigate a battle over committee assignments?

Now Harry "Useless" Reid is considering Lieberman's role in the Democratic Party?

We considered Reid's role as the Senate majority leader when he supported Dubya's war mongering policies after his false 2006 campaign pledges to do something about the war and cleanup Washington.

Reid should do the only honorable thing he can, resign, go back to Nevada and start feeling guilty about how he let the country down. The soldiers' blood on his hands won't wash off.

What is there to consider?
Uncle Joe is going to address the Republican Convention.
What is there to consider.?
He needs to be stripped immediately of all Democratic Committee positions.
What is there to consider?

"...What is there to consider?...."

Whether democrats will allow Reid to be minority ranking member on his committee assignments. With McCain rising in the polls, I think rethugs are going to retake the Senate. Especially after Lieberman switches parties.

Whether I support Obama is irrelevant, whether I support Clinton is irrelevant, I supported neither. The way McCain is climbing in the polls, if Obama selects anyone but Clinton for VP,iow makes his decision for emotional reasons instead of pragmatic political reasons, he's a damned fool and will lose. Clinton is Obama's only chance to win.

What should have been reconsidered long ago is the position of Mr. Reid himself as majority leader....

Sen. Reid has "led by example" and " set the daily agenda"......which has been as follows:

Get up early;........ hustle down to the capital........and find a Republican to surrender to........... in order to leave the balance of the day for lunch with those lobbyists ever EAGER to show their gratitude for legislative inaction.

Reid's exhaustive knowledge of the arcane Senate rules is often cited for his rise to the leaderership (even ...modestly..... by himself!)

To what end is all this knowledge being employed?? Every Republican initiative sails through like the 5 O'clock express train.....and every initiative important to Democrats fizziles, sputters and eventually grinds to a halt in the sand followed EVER by the hangdog lament... "we just don't have the votes"

Funny.... this is never heard from those in the ACTUAL minority.

No, Harry......it is you and Speaker Pelosi (slightly ...ONLY slightly better) who have FAILED to marshall those votes.

Lieberman? Lieberman Shmieberman.....he's a Republican with an I next to his name....Ignore him!

Just as Mitch McConnell is the very FACE of Republican intransigence.....Harry Reid is that of Democratic impotence and inaction.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way, Harry!
I strongly suggest the latter
