Wooden Keycards

At least during the Democratic National Convention, traditional plastic hotel key cards will go the way of the Whig Party.

Sustainable Cards LLC of Boulder has donated more than 70,000 wood hotel key cards to use at hotels throughout the Denver area. The wooden cards, made from sustainably harvested birch, carry the logo of the Denver 2008 Host Committee.

Wooden hotel key cards have been in use in Europe for about seven years. This will be their first use in the United States.

The key cards will be used in 90 hotels in the area --- virtually every hotel downtown and in the Cherry Creek, Stapleton and the Denver International Airport areas. Some hotels that still use metal keys, such as the historic Oxford Hotel in Denver, won't switch to the key cards.

Even better - anything that can be done via internet or TV should be done that way. So much money is spent on junk mail that no one EVER reads anyway - wasting paper, wasting time, wasting money

Why? So humans can continue to hate each other, as you are so fond of declaring we all do?

an even better idea is an actual metal key that can be used over and over again for 20 or thirty years.

Cool. In addition to burning about 800,000 gallons of jet fuel to get everyone to Denver we now also deforest a small birch grove. That's just got to make all the difference in the world to the environment.

That may be true (I really don't kno), but what good does it do to make MORE cards rather than use the ones in existence already? It's a waste!

That seems to be the first and most obvious question. Don't they break?

Nice idea.
Every week I get a discount card from Staples LAMINATED IN PLASTIC. I hope Staples gets this message - time to go to recycled materials.
