Ever head to Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and feel a calming mood wash over you?

Perhaps that peaceful feeling came from the soft sand and the lapping waves of Lake Michigan.

Perhaps not. The National Park Service on Thursday announced the park is home to another naturally soothing resource: marijuana plants.

Rangers and local law enforcement said the recently discovered plants appear to be wild instead of cultivated, and are growing throughout the park and on adjacent property.

You can't smoke the stuff, unless you like 3 day headaches.

There seems to be a lot of marijuana plants that grow wild in that area. There is an area northwest of the Dunes that was formally a dump site for slag from the various steel mills. Miraculously, vegetation covers the area and marijuana plants are quite abundant. I guess marijuana plants thrive in heavy industrial polluted areas.

What have we humans come to that we must destroy wild growing plants that present no harm to anyone or anything? And the real kicker is that if those plants are descendants of cannabis grown for hemp fiber you cannot get high from them anyway! Industrial hemp and recreational hemp are different strains, and you cannot grow them anywhere near each other because cross-breeding will render both useless for their intended purposes.

Your tax dollars at work! And another hit to American industry: Hostess, Dolly Madison, Mars, M&M, Doritos, etc.

I grew up in that area and the same plants, well, the plants older relatives, were growing there 50 years ago when I was a kid.

Tfhey grew a bunch of Hemp for rope during the War in the area.
