McCain Backs Away From Abortion Pledge To Make Rape, Incest Exception

ABC News' Teddy Davis and Rigel Anderson Report: John McCain's campaign signaled on Wednesday that the Arizona senator is backing away from his previously stated goal of changing the GOP's platform on abortion.

"There's a process in place for the delegates to work on the platform and we are going to let that process work itself out," McCain spokesman Brian Rogers told ABC News.

McCain's plan to take a hands-off approach with the abortion platform stands in stark contrast with the position he took during his first presidential run.

Rape/incest abortion exceptions are weasely, cowardly political hack positions. Anti-abortion crusaders usually say that the reproductive cells have a soul from the moment the lovers' eyes meet. So are all zygotes humans with souls in ultra-miniature, or are some zygotes more human and soul-ful than others? The rape/incest exception betrays the truth: anti-abortion is about punishing women for having sex for pleasure.

Republicans had better face the reality that those wishing to ban all abortions took over their party a long time ago. They tell themselves that the present laws will not change if McCain wins. They are wrong. The facts: he has a very questionable attitude toward women, he has said he would replace 4 of the less conservative Supreme Court Judges if possible. The only woman on the court is one of those four. He only needs to replace one to make it easy to remove all women's reproductive rights. Next they will be either dishing out Burkas or demanding women strip to the waist to be judged (a la Sturgis).
