Chet Edwards: Obama's Vice President?

AUG 22 -- Officials Say Edwards Is A Finalist: The rarely-mentioned Edwards is on Obama's short list, Democratic officials say.

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama prepared to name his running mate, perhaps as early as Friday, from a small field that included at least one dark-horse finalist.

Democratic officials said little-known Texas Rep. Chet Edwards was one of the few Democrats whose background was checked by Obama's campaign and he was a finalist for the job. [...]

Edwards is a favorite of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who praised his "extraordinary credentials" on ABC's "This Week" on Aug. 3 and said: "I hope he will be the nominee."

One Democratic official with knowledge of the conversation said Obama told Pelosi recently that she would be pleased with the choice. Other Democratic officials said he was on the short list. All spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss Obama's selection process.

Edwards, chairman of the Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations Subcommittee, is a nine-term moderate Democrat representing the GOP-leaning Texas district. He is well-known in Texas but does not have a national profile.

The Case For Edwards: By Matt Glazer of the progressive Texas blog Burnt Orange Report:

He is a nationally recognized veterans champion in Congress, with strong military support in deep connections in the U.S. Army and at the Pentagon. Just this year, he's been honored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. And as chair of the House Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations Subcommittee, he just authorized the largest increase in veterans' funding in the history of the VA.

Edwards is fresh face who won't overshadow Obama. He's a southern, moderate, white male in his late 50s who brings geographic and demographic balance to the ticket. He has humble blue collar roots, and has been known to speak Spanish from time to time.

Chet Edwards is a pretty darn good campaigner, with a record of winning in Republican turf. But in spite of (or perhaps because of) his broad appeal to Democrats as well as Republicans and Independents, he is well respected on Capitol Hill - with a wide range of support among liberals and conservatives. (An example: Congressman John Lewis, a liberal African American from Atlanta who fought beside Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, has been known to campaign with Edwards in Central Texas).

The Case Against Edwards: By Dylan Matthews at the American Prospect:

While the appeal of picking a Texas Democrat, especially one who has beaten back adversaries like DeLay in past elections, is understandable, Edwards would be a poor choice. Not only did he vote for the Iraq war authorization in 2002, a vote which could undermine the Obama campaign's emphasis on foreign policy judgment, he has an, at best, mixed record when it comes to votes on withdrawal.

While he voted for the House leadership's Responsible Redeployment from Iraq Act in 2007, he also voted for a Republican resolution in 2006 rejecting an "arbitrary date for withdrawal or redeployment", and for a 2007 emergency appropriations bill for the war without a timetable for withdrawal (he even voted against an amendment adding such a timetable). The latter two votes, along with his votes in 2007 and this past week for telecom immunity have led to his inclusion on Matt Stoller and Chris Bowers' list of "Bush Dog Democrats".

His conservative record doesn't stop with national security issues; he voted to make permanent the repeal of the estate tax, in favor of the Bankruptcy Reform bill, for drilling in ANWR, and against the 2007 House renewable energy bill. Perhaps most egregiously, he was one of thirty-six House Democrats to vote in favor of the the Federal Marriage Amendment in 2004. Is it really too much to expect the Democratic vice presidential nominee to be, at least, not to the right of John McCain on LGBT equality?

AUG 3 -- Pelosi Suggests Chet Edwards: The Speaker says she hopes Edwards will be the VP nominee.

In an interview Sunday, Pelosi said, "I didn't want to see a discussion of candidates for vice president without showing the House of Representatives... I just wanted people to be aware of the extraordinary credentials of Chet Edwards. And I hope he will be the nominee."

Pelosi told ABC's "This Week" that "for years, our colleagues have said to him, why don't you run for president? He is an extraordinarily talented person. He is a champion for veterans in the Congress. Under his leadership, we have passed, including just on Friday, the biggest increase in funding for veterans' health benefits and other benefits in the history of our country. "

Our next President Barrack H Obama has made the best decision of his life !!

Not chosing H Rotten Clinton has to be the one thing that puts him above all issues ............
to have that exhausting pressure by so many lunatic people that claim to be Democratics
has to be tough

His judgement once again has proven to be impecable !!!

The Clinton's assesinated his character, it is down to them all the smears have become
what they have become , so much so...........that they are running her ADS against our next President and even McCain is using her rethoric.........

They are behaving now - if you can even call it that - because they know if they do not, their political carrier plus their ability to make money talking nonsense will suffer.........
In Africa they think CLinton is still our President ????? and he does not persuade them of the opposite.... He is a bitter old man , just like McCain

perhaps they should become Republican those two....they will be paid well for their current favours

and as for PuMAS , they are such a joke !!!! could not even save their candidate from her debt
it is just so SAD>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Go figure what she would have done to our economy when she run her campaing into debt
because she was so ambitious

Sad Lady, sad old pinky man !

I will never vote for a Texan in the White House after this current infestation, as it is the place needs to be fumigated...!

I pray Obama doesn't pick this guy, all Texas politicians belong in Kansas...!

Leavenworth to be specific...!

Heh, that reminds me of a Bill Maher routine where he said Texans should be barred from the Presidency. And to prove he wasn't being partisan, he reminded the audience that Lyndon Johnson was from Texas and responsible for the Vietnam fracas.

Democrats LOSE because we whine and dwell on things that shoulds not be relevant. We may want to say the repugs stole 00/04 but we let them win with our continued pettiness and defiant attitudes.

Obama is about the electoral college which is what wins elections. It is not about the popular vote as Al Gore had a half a million more votes then Bush and lost because Bush had the electoral college. Obama won against Hillary because he strategically mapped out the delegate count and stratezied accordingly, and here we are whining about he can't win unless he picks Hillary, who had all the money, power, name recognization and influence yet us Democrats feel that SHE not US will be the ONLY reason Obama can win.

What is amazing is that the Democratic party has an influx of talent that will shore up any and every perceived weakness Obama may have and yet here we are once again whining and complaining - not realizing that WE THE PEOPLE are the government and Not Bill or Hillary or Biden or Chet or even Obama but WE THE PEOPLE. If you can't trust Obama's judgment after all he has proven he is capable of doing in the primary - then you don't deserve him as a president - and McCain is what you will have and what you will earn through your utter disregard to what is and always has been before you - THE POWER OF YOUR VOTE!

Not everyone feels she will be the only reason Obama can win.

Some say she will make him lose.
I read these threads everyday.
Yup, that's what they say.
How many people here actually say anything but that?

Not only that, if he does lose lots and lots of CDS'rs will blame her for his losing.
Will you?

In a way they will be right because the way they supported him fractured the party and they have done nothing to attempt solidarity and unity.
So by their constant attacks and venom there are a lot of people who will be staying home.
Not because HRC lost but because the OBots just took the life out of the whole thing.

And if you think its all HRC supporters you would be wrong. I know O supporters who feel the same way. I was one of them till I switched my support in part due to the extreme negativity and hatred being thrown out day in and day out on HRC and anyone who supported her-- or even said a decent thing about her.

I like Joe Biden a lot, and a Hillary / Biden ticket would have been a winner. However, Biden will not put Barry over the top. Unless Barry gets a backbone and picks Hillary, he's soooo over. He's got until Sat. morning to come to his senses.
11:03 PM on 08/22/2008
SlappHappy,
You're either an idiot, PUMA, or Republican. You are so wrong by not asking that @@@@@ to be on the ticket Obama is showing strength of character and backbone. He' s my hero for ending the self-serving, selfish Clinton stranglehold on the Democratic party, and resisting the extortion and implied threats from Clinton operatives in MSM. I am so proud of him for sticking to his guns on this critical decision.

It is time for people like you to deal with what is and not what could have been. It is time for America to face the reality of the times that we are in and how we got here and what is necessary to overcome. There will never be a Biden/Hillary ticket so why are you expending your energy with that nonsense.

Whether any of you want to accept it or not Obama has a backbone - he did overcome the powerhouse of the Clinton, a country full of racist, and a name that is being used as ridicule against him for no other reason than it is different. He has managed our money, won the primary, and stood up against a barrage of negative coverage and he did all these things without ever losing his cool or finding it necessary to tear another candidate or their family down - yet you seek a backbone.

Hillary had a backbone by your definition yet she lost, which is indicative of the fact that what you may perceive as weak another sees as strong Maybe you should accept that we are all unique and evil may be what you try to conquer up by saying Hussein but evil to me is really what you are when you do it.

You can trust that what you reap you will sow - if not now - definitely later. Guaranteed!

What she did in West Virginia ... and that RFK remark ... sealed her fate.

Verily I say unto thee: "Ye shall reap what you sew."

I got really excited as I attempted to post a commnt earlier. Please forgive me...
To recap, I think that the real sleeper choice for VP is BILL RICHARDSON! Yes, I said it...BILL RICHARDSON.
He fell off of the radar in a really weird way, don't you think? Further, I concluded long ago when the question about who was most qualified to be president arose, I firmly stated to all who would listern that in the democratic field of candidates, Bill Richardson IS hands down the MOST qualified to be President of the United States.
The big question...How would America take 2 men of color on the ticket?
10:23 PM on 08/22/2008
I cannot speak for aa's and hispanics. Whites vote on ideology and economy (jobs). By the way, I picked Richardson many months ago to be the VP. That would be the price for Richardson throwing his delegates over to Obama in Iowa. This was Obama's margin of victory and the reason he won Iowa and the rest is history.

I have become increasingly aware of gender identity politics - and I hate it! I am pleased to know that I have a Compadre in recognition of Bill Richardson.

Listen, I live in the Bronx, NY. As I left my house yesterday for a luncheon appointment, I was way layed by a neighbor who is pressing me to run for the City Council. Never mind that I am brilliant, progressive and proactive...his issue was demographic..."we need to hold onto this seat...if you don't get in the race, it may go to a Dominican..."
I don't give a rat's butt! If you are smart, intelligent, progressive, proactive, open and receptive, then you are my person!

P.S. I am a Black woman born to a North Carolina native mother and an Arkansan US Army draftee, born and initially educated in Italy who speaks Spanish (I live in the Bronx, Hello!).

I don't care about the color of anybody's skin, their religion, sexual orientation, etc.

Give me character and integrity!!!!!!!!!!
