DENVER — It was a coup for Democrats: An emerging young evangelical voice, a registered Republican no less, accepted their invitation to deliver a prayer at next week's Democratic National Convention.

But Cameron Strang, the 32-year-old editor of edgy and hip Relevant Magazine, had second thoughts and pulled out of delivering the benediction on the convention's first night, Monday. Citing fears that his bridge-building gesture would be wrongly construed as an endorsement, Strang said he instead hopes to take a lower-profile role, participating in a convention caucus meeting on religion later in the week.

"Through Relevant, I reach a demographic that has strong faith, morals and passion, but disagreements politically," Strang wrote on his blog. "It wouldn't be wise for me to be seen as picking a political side when I've consistently said both sides are right in some areas and wrong in some areas."

Little known to outsiders, the Strang name carries weight with evangelicals, especially in the fast-growing charismatic and Pentecostal branches. Cameron's father, Steven, who like his son is based in the Orlando, Fla., area, founded a magazine, Charisma, that spawned a publishing empire. The elder Strang has endorsed Republican Sen. John McCain.

Democratic Sen. Barack Obama's presidential campaign has aggressively courted the young evangelical vote, and the younger Strang has been part of it. He was on the guest list when religious leaders met with Obama in June in Chicago, consulted the campaign on Christian issues and interviewed Obama for his magazine, which claims a print circulation of 80,000 and 450,000 unique Web site visitors per month.

Yet Strang's reticence to play such a high-profile role shows such relationships are a work in progress: While Democratic leaders are reaching out to more diverse religious groups, many younger evangelicals are striving for political independence and common ground without compromising on core issues like abortion.

The convention's schedule is studded with faith-themed events, including the first interfaith gathering to open a Democratic convention. Those delivering invocations and benedictions during the four-night convention include a Greek Orthodox archbishop, a Catholic nun, a rabbi from Judaism's Reform tradition and Joel Hunter, a Republican and Florida megachurch pastor who has made the environment a signature issue.

In his blog post, Strang wrote that he initially accepted the benediction invitation, in part, so he could pray in a forum where faith isn't typically emphasized. He also wanted to provide tangible evidence that "this generation of values voters doesn't necessarily need to draw political battle lines the way previous generations have, and that we can work through areas of disagreement toward common goals."

Those goals range from fighting poverty, torture and genocide to protecting the environment and reducing the number of abortions, he wrote. Strang calls himself a pro-life Republican.

Learning later that he was to speak on the main stage on opening night gave him "serious pause." Strang said Obama representatives understood his decision, and he wants to keep his good relationship with them.

Asked whether he got any pressure to reduce his role, Strang said Thursday he got a few e-mails, but it was a personal decision.

Obama campaign and convention committee officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Democratic officials have emphasized their faith outreach work is meant to recognize the nation's religious diversity and unite the religious and nonreligious around shared values.

Strang found a different young evangelical to take his place delivering the closing prayer on Monday night: Donald Miller, author of the popular spiritual memoir "Blue Like Jazz."

Strang's soul-searching prompted one other change: He switched his political affiliation to independent this week.

As for his presidential preference, Strang said he still hasn't decided.

The Bible says you should pray for your enemies as you pray for your friends. It also says you should pray for your leaders. Praying with someone or for someone does not mean you support their issues.

Jesus said if you be ashamed of me, then i will be ashamed of you in front of my Father. Strange should not care about what the Republicans or whomever might question his actions. When you walk in Faith by Jesus the Christ, you have nothing to worry about. This speaks a lot about his beliefs and the influence this world have on people, no matter what religious title you wear.

Question: Do you put a woman on trial if she has a miscarriage? When does life begin? (God breathed Life through Adam's nostrills after he sculped the body if I'm not mistaken!!!! So, abortion is a complicated issue and we have to continue to search for that answer through prayer!!

Strange don't let the enemy(satan) influence you from a good cause in the name of Jesus.....

Obama/Biden .....

Strang is more a follower of the Saddleback Pharisees. The voice of the Holy Spirit is consistent, true and does not vary. If Jesus had succumbed to the voices of Republicans and Pharisees in Gethsemene where might we be now? Strang doesn't walk the talk!!!!

What a hypocrite Strang is... If he were to be sincere in his prayer, he wouldn't care what anyone said or thought about him being at the Democratic convention!

Just a few e-mails, eh? I'll wager at least one of them was threatening enough to get him to change his mind. This is the Republican Party we're talking about here. Masters of political thuggery...

A prayer for America-

G-d, please remove the plague of evangelicals that you have inflicted upon us.

Yes, Lord please save us from those who would have us be Saved and who are only slightly weirder than those who are too superstitious to speak or write Your name.

When I recently started hearing statistics like eighty percent of Americans believing the world will end in their lifetime, or a similar percentage believing that Jesus will return in their lifetime, I started watching for the traffic jambs on Sunday morning. Guess what? There were no traffic jambs. In fact, most of the church parking lots near my home are half empty and very few cars leave my block on Sunday morning.

If so many are believers they're sure doing it in private. Not that there is anything wrong with that - it just makes you wonder. I personally believe that people will lie to a pollster about religion, or religious faith, more quickly than any other topic.

So... I agree. Their numbers are far fewer than the media will report and likely dropping steadily as they have been in Europe for decades. I read an article in Time or Newsweek a few years ago that said church attendance in Europe is at or below ten percent of the population. It wouldn't surprise me if it is not all that much higher here in the U.S. Consider this; What percentage of the population does it take to clog traffic at Christmas time? No way that church going believers are more than twenty percent of our population. No way!

Organized religion has bullied its way into cowling people from realizing one of the greatest attributes of this nation is its secular strength. Professing a believe in the invisible is purely a private matter. Because we do not know what happens after death, religion slips into fill the vacuum. Political manipulation of this human vulnerability, is a very cruel manipulation indeed.

I guess Strang doesn't believe in the "we are all equal in god's eyes" rhetoric. Yeah, he is an edgy person until such time when he has to put his words into action. Another fraud exposed. Use your god when it's convenient for you to promote your own agenda and your profit making magazine. Religion and politics are becoming one and the same, a tool to use to get one's personal views expressed at the expense of corrupting real religious values. Mr. "Edgy " Strang can join the ranks of Falwell and Swaggart.

The perfect person to open the convention with a prayer would be that wonderful minister who performed Jenna Bush's wedding and is an Obama supporter.

To pray or not to pray, that is the question. Well, to prey to God is part of our faith regardless of religion. Faith needs no religion I may say. However, to use a prayer as a political tool is hypocritical and divisive.
SO I pray to God and I am a Jew or Muslim, does that make evangelicals less different?
The issue here is simple, IGNORANCE and MANIPULATION.

Bread and CIrcus to the masses, and now a prayer!

Is he also going to call off their prayers for rain in Denver on Obama Thursday? What foolish, small minded people. Is that what Jesus would do?

Why does the democratic party keep thinking that they need to reach out tot he bigoted homophobic evangelical communiity is beyond me. There is a difference between being spiritual and being Christian than being an evengelical hater.

I thought that Barack Obama was not afraid to stand up for change...change means not kissing the butt of those of are intent on discrimating against LGBT people and have a history of doing the same thing to people of color....well until they figured they could draw in people of color into their joint homophobia via the "church"....

What would J3sus really do?

The right sees the left as the "enemy" of America not thier opponents.

The sooner the left excepts that fact the better.

Until then, nothing will change.
