Crazy For The Red, White & Blue!

Crazy For The Red, White & Blue!

Glynnis already wrote about this, but since we're viciously competing for scoops I am too: Look at how excited Denver is for the convention! So very excited, if the neighborhood supermarket ("King Sooper" on Speers St.) is any indication. We walked into a delicious — and spacious, for those accustomed to New York! — patriotic paradise of foodstuffs, festooned with balloons and all dressed up in its very best red, white and blue. There were delicious cookies, cakes, and cupcakes along a patriotic theme, plus flowers, flags, and numerous patriotism-themed displays. And did we mention balloons? Oh and also, everything there was significantly cheaper than in New York. Like, dollars cheaper for things like shampoo and face cream (Neutrogena shampoo for $5.99, which is usually $7.99 at my local Duane Reade; and anyone familiar with the face cream aisle would have gone into a little bit of reverse sticker shock. And cereal for under $4.99? Wow.) But I digress - so here are some examples of Denver's hometown convention pride.

Flags n' flowers! These were actually really pretty.

These baked goods look Yankee Doodle Dandy!

Everyone knows that cupcakes are more delicious when enjoyed along with the execution of one's civic duty. Also, ipso facto, it is always patriotic to eat a cupcake. Update: These are cookies. I am a terrible reporter. But there were cupcakes!

Balloons! (And fresh, delicious mountain produce.)

These cookies look delicious. I may go back and buy some for the HuffPost Oasis, unless they are not sustainable enough (the Oasis is all about sustainability. I hope they'll let me in there with my Diet Coke!).

Even the NYT is getting in on the action - this was in our neighborhood Starbucks.

p.s. Patriotic musical theater lovers will recognize this headline from the song "Don't Put It Down" from Hair (see here and hear here). Arguably a pretty patriotic musical, depending a lot on how you feel about the Vietnam war.
