BEIJING — Order is restored in international basketball. The United States is back on top, but not by that much anymore. Culminating a three-year mission to end years of embarrassment, the U.S. Olympic team survived a huge challenge from Spain, winning 118-107 Sunday in the gold-medal game.

After overwhelming everyone for seven games, the Americans led by only four points with under 2 1/2 minutes to play. Then the U.S. proved it could handle a close game that seemed would never come in Beijing.

Their prize: the first U.S. gold medal since the 2000 Olympics.

"Much respect to Spain, but the U.S. is back on top again," LeBron James said.

Argentina won the bronze with an 87-75 victory against Lithuania.

Dwyane Wade scored 27 points for the Americans, who found a much gamer Spanish team than the one it humiliated by 37 points earlier in the tournament. Kobe Bryant added 20 points.

In a game so devoid of defense that it felt more like an NBA All-Star game than one with a title at stake, the Americans had too much offense down the stretch. Bryant converted a clutch four-point play with 3:10 remaining, holding his finger to his lips to quiet the rowdy Spanish crowd behind the basket.

Wade added another 3-pointer that made it 111-104 with just over 2 minutes left, and only then could the Americans relax a little.

They began to celebrate during a break after some technical fouls on Spain with 26 seconds left, then partied at midcourt when it was over with "Born in the USA" blaring over the arena's speakers.

"We played with great character in one of the great games in international basketball history, I think," U.S. coach Mike Krzyzewski said.

Nobody else had been close to the Americans in Beijing. This team's only Olympic competition had been history, in a Dream matchup with guys named Jordan, Magic, Bird and the rest of the U.S. team that dominated the Barcelona Games in 1992.

Forget comparisons to those guys. The Americans were lucky to be better than Spain on Sunday.

Rudy Fernandez scored 22 points and Pau Gasol had 21 for the Spanish, the reigning world champions who were hoping to win their first Olympic gold.

U.S. players appreciated the game Spain gave them. After the contest they hugged the Spanish players. Bryant had an especially long embrace for Gasol, patting his Los Angeles Lakers teammate on the back.

"They did what they were supposed to do," Gasol said. "We fought hard all the way."

Seeming to appreciate the moment, after congratulating Spain, the team joined in a circle, jumping up and down at center court and waving triumphantly to the crowd as Krzyzewski applauded on the sidelines.

The Americans had won their first seven games by 30.3 points, including a 119-82 rout of Spain. But they never had control of this game, giving up open looks from the perimeter and plenty of points in the paint.

But Bryant, who waited so long to finally wear the red, white and blue, hit two 3-pointers in a big fourth quarter to add the gold medal to the only piece of hoops hardware he didn't already own. The NBA MVP pounded his hands toward the floor in celebration at the end.

James scored 14 points, while Carmelo Anthony and Chris Paul had 13 apiece for the Americans, who had won bronze medals in their last two international events, the 2004 Olympics and '06 world championships.

The U.S. started planning for this game after that first event, the low point in its hoops history, following a sixth-place flop two years earlier in the world championships. Jerry Colangelo was given control of USA Basketball and constructed a national team program in 2006, requiring those who wanted to play to commit to three years.

He got Bryant and James quickly on board and landed almost everyone else he asked for, finding a group of NBA stars eager to give up their summer to get back what they felt belonged to their country.

And he needed all of them against a Spain team that on this day would have likely beaten any other recent U.S. squad.

Jason Kidd ran his record to 56-0 in senior international play and collected another gold to place alongside the one he earned in 2000, becoming the 13th U.S. player with multiple golds.

That elite list, which includes Michael Jordan and seven other Dream Teamers, could grow in 2012. Paul and Dwight Howard said they would be in London if asked, and perhaps half this team could join them.

James ran out for pregame warmups with his finger in the air, already believing the U.S. was No. 1. But even though the Americans were shooting better than 70 percent for most of the first half, it would take a long time to prove it.

James and Bryant were both on the bench after picking up two fouls in the first 3 1/2 minutes, and though Wade came in and picked up their scoring load, the U.S. reserves couldn't open their usual cushion.

Spain hit seven of its first nine shots, leading for much of the first quarter. A quick burst of 10 points by James and Wade had the U.S. advantage up to 14 points with 4 minutes left in the half, but Spain chipped away and trailed only 69-61 at the break.

Spain was within four on a number of occasions in the third, and Fernandez's 3-pointer cut it down to 91-89 with 8:13 remaining. Bryant answered with a bucket, later added a 3, and things seemed safe when James scored to make it 103-92.

Spain made one last push to close within 108-104 on Carlos Jimenez's 3-pointer, but Wade hit one on the other end, and the final score became lopsided when the Americans hit a bunch of free throws after the Spanish became frustrated and were called for the technicals.

Am I the only American who is disappointed when the United States WINS the gold medal in mens basketball? I find it a joke that our country has to field a team of NBA all-stars just because other countries have been doing it for years. In a George Bush, totally classless society I would expect nothing less.

Sure this game was closer than many expected, but think about it -- The US team had just blown these guys away by 37 points in a previous game a week ago. They were clearly the superior team. The immense PRESSURE of winning the Gold for the USA was so great on this team. They had to fight the demons of past losses and I believe that played a HUGE role in the fight that they endured last night at the hands of Spain.

For the record, this is the 3rd consecutive victory for Team USA over Spain including a victory over this team in the 2004 Olympics.

There are some real CLASS IDIOTS who are complaining that the NBA players get paid too much. Really? They get paid from the revenue that they generate to entertain and thrill their American and international audiences. If they don't deserve their salaries then who should get the revenue?

This is a classic case of supply and demand in the American marketplace. NBA players are very specialized in their field of work. Not many people can do what they do and get people from across the globe to watch them play on television or attend their games.

There is a streak of very low class envy toward NBA players for very stupid reasons. People who are successful in their own lives are not complaining about what NBA players earn.

My question to all you complainers is, " What can you do that would pay YOU millions?" If you are not earning those millions its nobody's fault but your own -
Go to the mirror and give yourself a SMACK across the face - Losers!

NBA stars are paid to win NBA games not win Olympics!
They make tremendous sacrifices and take great risks to play in these games. The off season is usually a time for them to recover physically from their NBA season.

They did a great job. I have watched every game (except Angola '08) that Team USA has played since, and including the 2004 Olympics. This was a very good team and they represented the USA very well. Hats off.

Most of the players that they competed against are also professional basketball players from different basketball leagues around the world including many international players who play in the NBA.

A lot of critics that are posting here - from their comments- know very little about basketball

There are obviously very few hoop heads in the huf fpo crowd. Team USA's victory over Spain was a hard fought victory that was never set in stone until the clock reached all zeros. You discredit international basketball by saying "whoopededoo, the NBA millionaires won a game they play for a living..." There are five NBA stars on Spain's National team. THey are a good team. And USA hadn't won a gold in international competition since 2000. Get a clue, this was a great achievement of character for these guys and we should be proud to have people like them representing our country. They were there for the swim relay that helped Phelps clinch his medal total and Lezak credited Lebron and Kobe as inspiration for his magnificent finish. These guys are stars cause they can do incredible things and in terms of athletics they are some of the best in the world, not because of the money. Why is it so hard to be proud of anything American? These guys won and they did it with class. GO USA!!!

Hey world, if you want to win the game against the US you need to be able to do three things. Shoot from the outside, pass the ball and play team defense. The gold metal game showed that these US teams or maybe US pro players in general don't play defense and if their shooting game is off they can be had. The Celtics won because they could do these three things and it seems that the NBA hasn't learned from the experience. Even Kobe who recently faced the Celtics and is rated one of the best players in the pros, does not understand that you have to put the team first and guard your man. In the gold metal game the US players were shocked and acted like they were ready to run for the locker room when Spain did these three things. I wonder if all of the games would have been 100 to 50 for the US if these typical pro players had been replaced by the Celtics.

Hey letsgetsmart. You are a celtics fan aren't you. If you had been watching the entire olympic B-Ball tournament then I think you would know that the way USA got to that gold medal game was by doing those three things you mention. They were able to attack the zone because of good passing, cause if anyone played man against them the US athleticism would overwhelm their defense. They played great team defense in almost every game except the Gold medal game...and they won. Outside shooting was a problem to a degree and the team struggled. I think a lot of that has to do with the perimeter being more of a mid range NBA shot and the guys aren't as comfortable with that, and they have to catch and shoot which none of them often do. Spain put up a good fight and I bet the US was a little shocked...mainly because they had creamed Spain by 37 in pool play. The Celtics on the other hand, would be hard pressed to win in the international tournament. Ray, Paul and KG are amazing and KG should have been on the olympic team but they are as a team set up perfectly for NBA ball...not international. They run a lot of isolation and really focus on one player at a time attacking.

I will admit it Al that I am a Celtics fan and have been since Bill Russel played and one thing has always been true about this team is defense and team concept over individual athletic performance. When I was in college a bunch of us that hid from the cold in the gym volunteered to be a scrimmage team that the girls team could work out against because we automatically passed and defended. The coach thanked us a lot because the girls got pretty good at attacking our defense. This is the problem with the world in this sport, limited experience and you make my point for me when you mentioned the number of pro players on the team from Spain. If some country would assemble enough quality athletes and watch a lot of Celtic films you will see what I mean. After this last NBA season this is probably going to happen in the future.

Sure, they great transition looks cause of strong D but they certainly aren't the most athletic team. I think team USA that just won would cream the Celtics roster from this past season - HANDS DOWN. GO USA!

And in addition to the eye patch and knee play, let China put 5 year-olds in to dribble between the legs of the giant Americans and leap frog a dunk off Lebron's back.

Seriously this is news? The NBA all stars beat the rest of the world, wow who would have thunk it? I thought the Olympics were for armature athletes, but in this battle with China to see which country has more gold medals to prove who the superpower is to the rest of the world every medal counts, to me its sad and pathetic.

I personally salute the efforts of the dream team and all Olympic athletes, but I am not watching the Olympics this year, as it feel its very 1936, and fascism is back and it is China.

Let me say that I'm with you on the matter of personal protest: I refused to pay any attention to the Olympics because they were in China and China is run by a bunch of authoritarian thugs who belong in the Hague on trial not collecting accolades for presenting a showcase Olympics.

As for amateurism... that notion died more than 40 years ago when Communist states first developed the process of developing professional athletes with amateur standing. The West competing for 30 years against Warsaw Pact nations who set professional athletes to the Olympics to compete against legitimate amateurs; yet, more times than not, the amateurs won much to the humiliation of the Soviets and their puppet allies. After the fall of the USSR, the IOC adopted an imminently more sensible policy that permits competition by all athletes regardless of how they earn a living.

Athletes shouldn't be faulted when the world's government uses them for political purposes but those watching the Games should understand that often governments do use the Olympics to manipulate public opinion and perceptions. Hitler tried to do it in 1936, the Soviets in 1980, and the Chinese are trying to do it with the 2008 games. The IOC should never have granted them the games but that's another story.

I agree with your statements Indubio.
But why mimic the evil. Just think how great it
would be to keep the olympics with the masses
of great atheletes that actually work for a living.
And be proud of it.

C'mon people! It's not like the other teams didn't have world caliber players who star in the NBA. Gasol ain't no slouch and Spain was the reigning world champion until our team beat them to take the gold. The NBA is a better league because of the many talented foreign players and, if our team was made up of college kids, Spain would have wiped them out. Our stellar team beat a great team fair and square; our best beat their best to take home the gold and that's what the Olympics are all about.

Quit yer bitchin and celebrate. We don't have much else to celebrate anymore.

Yeah, you tell 'em, fellow wingnut !!

God gave sports to the USA! God gave us the third largest country (by population), thus ensuring a larger pool of talent to choose from. God gave us endless resources and wealth to waste on professional athletes. God hates the rest of those pathetic third-world countries !!!!!

Just look at the all-important medal count for proof.

Funny how winning a Gold Medal gives Kobe a full pardon for bending a hotel clerk over a chair and sodomizing her, and then hiring an attorney who ignored specialized in getting athletes off the hook by ignoring rape shield laws. His wife forgave him after he bought her a multi-million dollar gold ring. Apparently everyone else is happy to be bought off with a gold medal.

I still wish the Lakers would trade him. I'd rather cheer for the Lakers than the Clippers, but I won't support a team that includes Kobe.

Man, if I wasn't married, I'd ask for your number. You are one sports-lovin, patriotic babe.

What these latte-sipping commies don't get is that Kobe is an American sports hero! He can do whatever he wants, then go in front of the cameras and ask for redemption, and we are obliged to give it to him. That is the American way. Otherwise, all the money those shoe companies sink into these guys will be wasted. Do these people hate our economy that much?

Why don't you anti-US pukes move to a country where they don't worship basketball? What are you gonna watch on the TV then? Soccer?
