DENVER — Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama agreed Monday to limit a divisive roll call for president, giving delegates a brief but historic choice between a black man and white woman.

The deal would allow some states to cast votes for both Obama and Clinton before ending the roll call in acclamation for the Illinois senator. Clinton herself may cut off the vote and recommend unanimous nomination of Obama, according to Democratic officials involved in the negotiations. They discussed the deal on condition of anonymity while details were being finalized.

Some Clinton delegates said they were not interested in a compromise, raising the prospect of floor demonstrations that would underscore the split between Obama and Clinton Democrats.

"I don't care what she says," said Mary Boergers, a Maryland delegate who wants to cast a vote for Clinton.

As part of the deal, Obama and Clinton activists teamed up and circulated three petitions on the convention floor Monday night _ supporting Clinton, Obama and vice presidential candidate Joe Biden. Each needed 300 signatures to be nominated.

The dealmaking indicates the divided nature of the party: Obama does not have full control over a convention that includes many delegates who are enthusiastic Clinton supporters. But both senators have an incentive to help make peace between their opposing sides _ Obama so he'll have their backing in November and Clinton so she'll be well positioned for a future run.

Clinton herself said she wouldn't tell her backers how to vote, but she told them she would cast her own vote for Obama. "We were not all on the same side as Democrats, but we are now," she said.

Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, the eldest child of the late Robert F. Kennedy and a former lieutenant governor of Maryland, said the animosity that some Clinton delegates feel toward Obama "is getting worse."

Townsend, a Maryland delegate, was a strong Clinton supporter but now is fully behind Obama. She said she partly understands why some of her colleagues have not joined her yet.

"There's a moment that you want to enjoy your bitterness," she said.

Clinton advisers have been holding talks almost every day on the question of how to handle the roll call, and they were still struggling to solve the mechanics of honoring Clinton without getting bogged down in time-consuming counting.

Obama said he isn't involved in negotiations over the roll call and is letting campaign manager David Plouffe work out the details with the Clinton team.

As part of the compromise in the works for weeks, the New York senator will be the headliner Tuesday night. Her husband, former President Clinton, will speak Wednesday _ part of her request that he be on a separate night, negotiators said.

An official familiar with conversations between the Obama and Clinton camps said Hillary Clinton fully realizes it would hurt her politically to be seen as anything other than 100 percent behind Obama. Bill Clinton "is not as far along" in reconciling himself to his wife's loss, said the source, who would speak only on condition of anonymity because private conversations were involved.

However, the former president is eager to draw sharp distinctions between the policies and visions of Obama and McCain. Clinton is in discussions with Obama aides over how broad the speech should be, the source said.

It was not clear whether there would be floor demonstrations for Clinton after her name was placed in nomination, a spectacle that could detract from Obama's political coronation.

The animosity in Denver is not just on the Clinton side. Susan Castner, a Clinton delegate from Portland, Ore., said six people insulted her as she walked alone down the street Saturday night wearing a Clinton T-shirt, telling her to take it off and calling her a profanity.

"I know this is not coming from Barack Obama, but his supporters are helping us decide who to vote for" in November, Castner said. "I hate the feeling that you shouldn't wear your Hillary gear unless there are two or three of you together."

The split pales in comparison to past political convention battles like the 1980 fight between Jimmy Carter and Ted Kennedy. President Carter beat him in the primaries, but Kennedy supporters tried to take away the nomination at the New York convention. Kennedy didn't have the votes for the nomination, and at the convention finale he shunned the hugs and clasped hands that are customary at adjournment.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who is chairwoman of the convention, said the party must move past their primary divisions, but there should be a full roll call vote.

"I can't imagine not going into a convention and hearing 'Alabama!' and the whole world looking up to see what comes next," she said. "But as typical of these roll calls, at a certain point, somebody has the votes and the protocol and graciousness come through and that will have its own dynamic."

I hope she let's O win. No roll-call. Put Bill on 5 second delay.

Let the chips fall.

Lost in all the arguments and accusations is the fact that some delegates are rule-bound to vote as they were sent to, now however they might want to choose. Getting chosen as a Hillary Clinton delegate from some states back in March doesn't mean you can just roll up to the convention and vote for Obama. Many delegate votes are decided in the primary (as it SHOULD BE *coughidioticcaucusescough*) and aren't subject to release. I'd be very upset to find out that the delegates from my state went and voted a way in which I and the other winners of our primary did not choose. How can you despise any kind of "backroom dealings" (which is what you that the Clintons would be up to) when there is going to be a blatant front room theft of properly apportioned delegates?

The roll call needs to happen, uninterrupted, otherwise this convention will stand out as the lone year out of the past 40 in which the Democrats couldn't get through a roll call vote at their own convention. That would truly be disgusting.

I agree that Hillary's race performance led directly to the problems that exist now. By attacking Obama in Rove style antics, she caused a major split that is not necessary. Yet, I believe these attacks have little to do with disenchanted women and more to do with an old Party elite that is losing its power. like a cornered and defeated animal, it is doing everything it can to hang on. So much of their way of doing things reflects Republican style approaches to power and electoral control. They reflect a feudal system down to candidates visiting local campaign bundlers in their visits and private sessions with the nominees promising access for dollars.

The 2 million strong Obama donor juggernaut is blowing all of this asunder. With all of their passion, Hillary people can't get her out of debt. Yet the real issue is that Clinton has lost and continues to lose support in her home state from those who have a vivid memory of her divisive attacks and republican inspired campaigning tactics. She needs to address these issues before a credible opponent rises up to challenge her Senate seat.

And we would believe MRS Clinton because?

Mrs Clinton doesn't want to get blamed if Obama loses the election, however, as I mentioned in another post her actions insured a fractured party. Now at the last minute she wants to be viewed as helping and cooperative..... give me a break. I think the actions of the Clinton's are really starting to irritate too many people and she knows that if she wants to remain in any good standing in the party she has to start acting conciliatory. Unfortunately it is too late for her to be believable, and the fact that her supporters are like Rendell and Carville are acting like indolent children who just didn't get their way are fracturing the party... and I believe their actions are not so innocent. Gov. Rendell said if Obama was the nominee they would stand behind him, however, all their actions don't speak of support ,and he is too seasoned a politician not know that his comments are causing more damage to Obama.. They want Obama to lose, it opens the way for Mrs Clinton to run in 2012. People who have lost races or nominations and exited with style and class get more support in the long run.

If Hillary supporters cause Obama to lose the election as they seem to want, it will destroy any future political career she envisions. Obama supporters, many of whom I have spoken with at length on this subject, would walk a mile in the snow to vote for Ronald McDonald for POTUS before they would cast a vote for Hillary Clinton. Bill would have to move his office because he would no longer be safe in Harlem. No longer would Obama supporters vote for a candidate, they would vote against Hillary for anything, even latrine cleaner.

That is, if there is any country left to vote in by then.

I hope the response to both Clinton speeches is tepid. It's a polite way of sending a message that the Bush/Clinton DYNASTIES ARE OVER!! We could all use some fresh air.

Just because Hillary got 18 million votes does not mean that she has that many committed supporters. These "left-overs" are republicans trying to throw a monkey wrench into the process. People only "imagine" they constitute a threat. Well they couldn't get her the nomination - so what are they? What do they want? Do they expect to change somebody's mind? They are dumb, delusional or republicans. Say they get their "way" - through some twist of fate: what the HELL do they expect the Obama supporters to do? Hillary couldn't fill a high school gymnasium. You'd think with the number of supporters they claim to have that she'd be out of debt. Somebody needs to tell these haughty nuts that they're the ones playing with fire. They whole "movement" is bogus.

McCain will be 72 years old this Friday and his policies are the same policies as Bush. Do you want 4 more years of the same old policies that have our country in the mess that it is in now?

McCain is for NAFTA, and Obama is against NAFTA. Barack Obama will keep jobs in our country and he will fight for the rights of American workers.

McCain owns 7 houses and he will give tax breaks only to the richest of Americans who make over 200,000 per year. Barack Obama will give tax breaks to the middle class and the poor.

Will McCain have a military draft if he is elected President? He can't have a 100 year war without a military draft.

The Republicans are the party of the rich and the rich oil companies. The Democrats are the party of the people. Get to the polls in November and vote for Barack Obama and lets get a win for the people!

VOTE FOR BARACK OBAMA AND LETS GET A DEMOCRAT WIN IN NOVEMBER!

Why do Tv talkers feel they need to repeat GOP talking points that have been proven false to present "balance" to one the greatest speech ever given by a future first-lady.

It was a great and sincere speech. It warmed me up to Michelle.. I'm a male under forty who supported Senator Clinton. But the issues at stake demand unity now. I am continually amazed at how our so called free press manipulates. The way they repeatedly played Michelle Obama's critical commentary of her experience of this country. When I saw her tonight, I realized the extent the media went to to distort and mislead. Good show Michelle. Sincere and heartfelt speeches yes, the "greatest"? You should listen to some delivered by Ellinor Roosevelt and....dare I say, even Hillary.

I dont' know if at this late date HRC can control her extreme supporters--that is, assuming she wishes to. She was instrumental in appealing to their very worst, most base sides of their psyches and it will not be easy to undo the damage.

So I have a proposal that is not very "nice" but would be effective. That is, if any contingent attempts to disrupt the conventionn with some half cocked demonstration undermining Obama's very legitimate position as our candidate and the leader of our party, thousand of Obam delegates should simply rise and drown out the troublemakers.

I know, I know--we have to show Unity. But the what is worse? A little break in the unity picture or listening to Wolf Blitzer talk about Hillary Clinton and the putative 18 million Clinton supporters for the next two weeks, or more likely--the rest of our lives!

By "they" I'm sure you politically savvy folk don't mean the majority of those who voted for Hillary, because most of those will now support Obama based on the issues, not necessarily out of infatuation.. Might be helpful to The Cause if you guys were just a little more exacting and clear on this.

Indeed. Totally and completely psycho.

What is sad is that Hillary called out the racist vote in order to get the popular vote to give her a better chance of winning. Now, she can't control them. I firmly believe that the pooomas problem is not their support of Hillary, but their unwillingness to support an African American.

Their prejudices are so very obvious. If they cared about Hillary they would stop, if they actually was supporting her cause, they would stop. They are ruining any chance of her running for POTUS, ever again.

Hillary should take responsibility. She called them out to support her, and now they won't go away.

As always there are a bunch of Clinton haters.

I "think" that when Hillary and Bill speak at the convention, that they will put their full support behind Obama. I mean both of them have already done campaign stops for Obama. Both of them have stated publicly that they are and will work to elect Obama.

I'm afraid that no matter what they say or do, it won't be enough. Those that think they are scheming lying opportunists will be unconvinced. The bile and invective will continue. I'm afraid it's a conundrum.
These people would never admit that they "may" have been wrong about the Clinton's.

While we will know in a day or two just what the Clinton's will say at the convention, I'm afraid that it will not matter to many of you people. These two people can help tremendously to get Obama elected. You don't care. There are millions of people whose lives improved during Bill's presidency. You don't care. His presidency dealt with important times and issues, always under attack from the republican congress. You don't care. He was forced to go through impeachment hearings, but GW gets a pass. You don't care. Your constant spewing of bile and invective may inspire someone to not vote at all, forget voting for McSame. You don't care.

I hear Bill and Hillary are talking about unity. You don't care.
It's apparent then, that it's you folks that don't want unity. Not them.

Let me refresh your memory about what the Clintons will "say" ...

Bill - "I did not have sex with that woman!"
Hill - "We landed under fire and had to run for cover!"

Don't get me wrong - I am not passing judgment, but I am just sayin' ... talk is cheap, and all of America knows that they will each lie on live TV when it suits their agenda.

Granted, you have good points. People's lives did improve (mine did!), his impeachment proceedings and GW's free pass are a deplorable indication of the heinous nature of the current government, Dem and Repug, and I was one of the brothers who referred to him as the first Black President. However, Hilly's campaign showed a different side of him, and her, that I was appalled to witness, and I truly felt betrayed and disrespected by their actions.

In the Marines, we had a saying:

10,000 attaboys = 1 ah, s**t!

Clinton supporters who are anti-Obama at this point are just hatemongers who Hillary stoked the racist and sexist fires of and linked those feelings unjustly with Obama's name.

The proof is that they literally HAVE no argument for why they hate Obama. He has always been aggressively in favor and has fought for ALL of the issues that Hillary Clinton would supposedly fight for were she the nominee, so they would see all their goals realized under an Obama presidency.

No, this is personal hatred, born of a nasty, sleazy, divisive, personal campaign Hillary directed at Obama, turning him as a person into an object of hatred for her supporters.

She hung sexism around his neck when he is sooo pro-woman and so deeply affected by the women in his life who have molded him (his mother, his wife, his 2 daughters, his grandmother).

And now they are so senselessly and irrationally hate filled that even if it means seeing all their goals and dreams dashed to pieces and this country sent spiraling into the abyss, they want Obama to lose.

Giving them a voice at the convention is tantamount to opening the floor to hate speech. They are a hate group with no other agenda but to see Barack Obama lose at all costs, regardless of who else wins.

There is no way to "heal" this group or bring them into the fold. They must be shunned and isolated like the Dixiecrats.
