***UPDATE: SEE BELOW FOR NEW SPEECH EXCERPTS***

When Michelle Obama takes to the podium this evening at the Pepsi Center in Denver, she'll be delivering a speech that she spent nearly a month constructing with her staff. According to a campaign source, Michelle was "integrally" involved not only in choosing the anecdotes from her own history with the presumptive Democratic nominee, but was deeply engaged at the line-edit level.

"The speech really is her creation," the source told the Huffington Post, adding that Michelle started working on a first draft before the family's Hawaii trip, because "she's not a politician, she's a a mom." Of course, it's not surprising that a campaign source would seek to give Michelle Obama the lion's share of credit for words she's set to deliver. But in this instance, the source repeatedly hit that note -- and said that even after the circle working on the speech widened, staff members quickly came to learn that Michelle "really is a good writer."

In a preview of the speech emailed out to reporters Monday afternoon, the Obama campaign said Michelle will talk about "building a family grounded in faith and values," as well as her upbringing on the South Side of Chicago.

"Her story is a great American story: modest means but big dreams -- and encouragement from loving parents that she and her brother could accomplish whatever they put their minds to if they worked hard," the memo read. "Like Barack, Michelle was also taught to give back to the community and the country that has given her so much. Now, as a working mother of two young girls, Michelle is continuing to give back to the community and country she loves. Like many moms, she's learned to juggle the responsibilities of work and family."

Did Barack Obama have any input on the remarks? The campaign source declined any knowledge of the Senator's involvement, though she's "sure he's seen it, since they're such good partners." But in the end, the source said, "it was her decision."

Excerpts from Michelle Obama's speech are below:

"But each of us also comes here tonight by way of our own improbable journey. I come here tonight as a sister, blessed with a brother who is my mentor, my protector and my lifelong friend. I come here as a wife who loves my husband and believes he will be an extraordinary president. I come here as a Mom whose girls are the heart of my heart and the center of my world - they're the first thing I think about when I wake up in the morning, and the last thing I think about when I go to bed at night. Their future - and all our children's future - is my stake in this election. And I come here as a daughter - raised on the South Side of Chicago by a father who was a blue collar city worker, and a mother who stayed at home with my brother and me. My mother's love has always been a sustaining force for our family, and one of my greatest joys is seeing her integrity, her compassion, and her intelligence reflected in my own daughters."

***

"And Barack and I were raised with so many of the same values: that you work hard for what you want in life; that your word is your bond and you do what you say you're going to do; that you treat people with dignity and respect, even if you don't know them, and even if you don't agree with them.
And Barack and I set out to build lives guided by these values, and pass them on to the next generation. Because we want our children - and all children in this nation - to know that the only limit to the height of your achievements is the reach of your dreams and your willingness to work for them."

***

"And in the end, after all that's happened these past 19 months, the Barack Obama I know today is the same man I fell in love with 19 years ago. He's the same man who drove me and our new baby daughter home from the hospital ten years ago this summer, inching along at a snail's pace, peering anxiously at us in the rearview mirror, feeling the whole weight of her future in his hands, determined to give her everything he'd struggled so hard for himself, determined to give her what he never had: the affirming embrace of a father's love."

Beautiful Warm elegant, smart, a mother a friend, a role model. Proud definitely and deservingly so, angry, no no no no never, how could anyone think that.
She ain't no pushover and she did not have a silver spoon in her mouth when she was born. Her story is like the story of so many Americans and so many families and so many women...........
Give her her respect, and get a grip.

I do not want to tear down Cindy, no need, but I will not accept trash talking a potential first lady regardless of party affiliation. Talk about the guys, but a lady is still a lady. Women are the back bone of our families and they need to be strong productive citizens. I believe Michelle shows a great work life balance, and level headedness that could benefit all American Families as a shining example of a darn good way to live.

Next was FOX NEWS Juan Williams (black FOX NEW analyst) as he critiqued her speech, he got choked up and teary-eyed (and then my tears came) as he talked about the proud moment for black people across America and the fact that a potential black first lady is addressing the nation.
This morning as I dropped my daughter off at school I listened to conservative Laura Ingram. She mocked Michelle's speech (ebonics style), said "Why is Michelle so angry?", "her kids are cute", her "husband is a rock-star", "she makes plenty of money".."she's just an angry black woman"! After two callers agreed with Laura and said "Michelle is an angry black woman, I’m not buying her speech” I got teary-eyed and turned the radio completely off.
I was proud last night, but so angry this morning. Whites still think she's an "angry black woman" and she has not done enough to prove her patriotism. What more can the woman do to appease her white critics? She is who she is. Sure, she's open to criticism as a potential first-lady...but for the media to continue to portray this woman as "the angry black woman" is truly bigoted.

Michelle is not angry, those were vicious rumors and lies and to continue to perpetuate those horrible images against a real American family is disgusting, great job turning off the radio, I have found myself changing the channel more and more often..
FYI I watch alot more cspan lately I am disliking the commentary from almost all networks.
just negative divisive and has nothing to do with the issues at all and little to do with the truth...Michelle represent the success that every working family wants, and they serve as proof positive that hard work can pay off. I mean really families are failing apart every day and her story and Barrack’s story are true stories of heroism perseverance, dedication and determination. They are the college grads who come back to work in their communities to make things better for the less fortunate among us........
Recognize the truth; see the real people they are. We need some regular working people in the white house so that all of America Can be better.

Mrs Obama reminded me of my own mother and father who were just like her parents. Mom and dad would have liked her if they were still alive.

Thanks Michelle.

what i saw last night was the true meaning of cracking the glass ceiling. not just for the select few but for all. there were white women, black women, hispanic and asian women with tears in their eyes knowing that part of Michelle's experience was theirs too. I saw two little black girls who with the other little girls of this nation will know that they too can achieve and maybe one day be rewarded for their hard work. i saw a room full of people who realized that we really aren't that different and that once civil rights meant the coalition of interests of women, blacks, gays and grays. what i saw was what unity is really about.
that is what is missing in the misguided and divisive rants of those women who believe HRC represented that achievement for them. one of the reason the civil rights movement died was because the coalition's parts began to seperately persue their own interests. women's rights, gay rights, gray panthers. i remember, i lived through it. i also remember the failure of the ERA precisely because the true coalition for civil rights was broken.
we have a chance to correct that mistake if we remember as did the whites, blacks, men, women, jews, catholics, gays and the elderly remembered in the sixties that a crack in the ceiling for one is a crack for all...

You and your snide off-color remarks are the reason why prople hate America and that is also why their will always be race issues. Let me ask you a question. Are all the residents in your trailer park as crude as you are?

I don't want to limit my words so here's my two posts.

1.

As a black person, I don't know how much more a** kissing Michelle can do to prove to white people that she loves her country. She has been reduced to an angry black woman, by one statement she made. Black people were proud and choked up last night, while pundits tried to prove their point of the “scary and unpatriotic” Michelle”.
As I surfed channels last night Ben Stein ripped Michelle on Larry King and basically said he doesn't "buy her story" and there was nothing special about her speech..Of course he’s entitled to his opinion.

Fantastic speech. Do you think Fox and Friends will finally admit that she's a real human being and not a terrorist, after all?

FOX is here for the spin, and they spin it for the white house and the right wing....a bunch of pretty faces reading queue cards with minimal brains in the mix
CNN is confused and dazed, depending on the segment they may get to the truth or they may just repeat the lie told in fake analysis as to whether the lies were truth without giving pertinent info to form an opinion. They get so convoluted that they cannot even answer the question.
oh fyi...Larry King an his show have gone the way of the dogs, he isn’t even a pretty face but he no longer has input that is valid in any way shape or form..........
and the inde Lou Dobbs, he has some good stuff but his opinion on this race.it mired in mystery because I don't think he researches much himself, because if he looked at Obama's website he could see the solutions plans to implement to help Americans

She was wonderful and, of course, so was Kennedy.

But no one's mentioned another speaker I very much enjoyed--Michelle's brother, Chris. I thought his speech was so interesting and personable--really made me feel I knew Michelle and Barack much better (and the video helped, too, with her mother's narration).

I thought he was a really good speaker, too--natural, persuasive, and easy to listen to. Great job from everyone tonight!

I really don't see how McCain is going to be able to capture this kind of warmth and humanity next week. Maybe they'll just settle for "noun, verb and POW."

McCain will be 72 years old this Friday and his policies are the same policies as Bush. Do you want 4 more years of the same old policies that have our country in the mess that it is in now?

McCain is for NAFTA, and Obama is against NAFTA. Barack Obama will keep jobs in our country and he will fight for the rights of American workers.

McCain owns 7 houses and he will give tax breaks only to the richest of Americans who make over 200,000 per year. Barack Obama will give tax breaks to the middle class and the poor.

Will McCain have a military draft if he is elected President? He can't have a 100 year war without a military draft.

The Republicans are the party of the rich and the rich oil companies. The Democrats are the party of the people. Get to the polls in November and vote for Barack Obama and lets get a win for the people!

VOTE FOR BARACK OBAMA AND LETS GET A DEMOCRAT WIN IN NOVEMBER!
