LITTLETON, Colo. — Vice presidential candidate Joe Biden thanked Delaware delegates Tuesday for standing by their home-state senator and served up a mea culpa for his foibles and imperfections.

Biden, known for an unscripted style that sometimes gets him into trouble, told a small breakfast gathering that he couldn't have weathered personal failures without their help, and allowed that his spot on the ticket will come with challenges, drawing knowing laughter from the crowd.

"It's all out there, in the clear public view," Biden said. "I didn't always comport myself in the way that I wanted to."

"My private life has been lived in the public arena because y'all got me started so young," Biden said. "I hadn't been out of law school but a year when I got involved in the Democratic Party."

Aides said Biden was referring to his tendencies to shoot from the hip, and set a sometimes condescending tone.

Biden first won his Senate seat in 1973. He's run two unsuccessful presidential campaigns, including a 2008 bid that that ended after a disappointing showing in leadoff Iowa. The chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee noted he's not used to playing a supporting role.

"I've never been a team," he said. "I should've been a one-man band."

Biden, at times emotional and ignoring prepared remarks that praised both Barack and Michelle Obama, also offered personal thanks as his large family listened.

"The only reason I came by is to tell you that I love you," Biden said.

But Biden _ the quick-witted, sharp-tongued banterer _ kept his signature humor.

"This is the first time I've ever had security. Senators don't matter," he said to laughter.

He also took credit for the updated seating chart on the floor of the convention, where Biden will be nominated on Wednesday.

"The only reason I accepted the nomination ... so the Delaware delegation could be moved up front," Biden said. "As the old joke goes: How about them seats?"

Later Tuesday, Biden stopped by Michelle Obama's round-table on women's economic issues. Again, the humor came when he noted most of the audience were women: "Thank heaven for small favors."

He also noted his seniority in the Senate but also reminded them he took office at age 30.

"There's still 44 senators older than me. I want you to know that. I don't give a damn if you remember anything else."

Biden's failed 1988 run was marred by plagiarism of speeches and law review articles.

As he began his second presidential run, Biden found himself apologizing for calling Obama "articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy." He also drew criticism for his remark that "you cannot go to a 7-Eleven or a Dunkin' Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent."

Joe Biden & his connection to a credit card company, MBNA, has drawn the attention of Erick Umansky of the site PRO PUBLICA which should induce Barack Obama to drop Joe Biden from the VP slot as George McGovern did when dropped Mark Eagleton, MD from the ticket. Biden voted for a bill which made it much more difficult for a consumer burdened by credit card debt to declare bankrupty. MBNA, MBNA's successor & the credit card industry can now stop a debtor from getting the relieif from debt the old bankruptcy law gave them due to Joe Biden's support for the new bankruptcy bill. Thanks, Joe [from the credit card industry].
BHO should drop Joe Biden as his VP unless BHO wants McCain to become POTUS # 44.

Biden is from Delaware where all the large banks/credit card companies are located. If he was from Iowa, he'd have to be pro ethanol. It's the system which needs to be changed. I agree the bankruptcy law is outrageous. Look for that to change over the next few years. Biden's not the senator from Delaware anymore after January. He'll be in a totally different position.

Really? So now people can't borrow thousands of dollars from banks and then not pay it back like they used to? What a tragedy. I think there should definitely be some serious regulation on the way that banks hand out credit cards like candy to people who don't have any real resources (like students and unemployed,) but at the end of the day, an adult still has to be responsible for his/her actions, or what's the point of being an adult? I agree with the other comment here that disapproves of the lack of an exception for people facing huge medical bills, but for most people, I say if you ran up the bill, pay it.

I'd like to see the bankruptcy thing organised in such a way that those who actually can take advantage of the bent system can't live in mansions and be driven around in limos while not paying their bills. The middle and working class schlubs who go broke the old-fashioned way lose everything lock, stock and barrel before they even discover that bankruptcy isn't an option

Yeah Biden even voted against Kennedys amendment to allow folks with the burden of crushing medical bills from a sudden and expensive illness to seek relief from the credit card companies.
Biden Voted with the Republicans on that issue over and over and over again.
The Daily Kos has been very good covering this issue.

I believe that this type of lopsided bankruptcy law wmboldened credit card companies to continually offer people credit, like the subprime business this is destroying our credit markets and subjugating the workers in America to the elite classes.

I was devastated to have Biden on the ticket for just this issue.

Nominating Biden brings shame to the Democratic ticket he has sold out so many hard working struggling folks.

Selling out to big banking? Is that the wobbly plank that the party wants to stand on?

Thre is something lovable about Biden. The guy is humble enough to admit he makes mistakes. Have we once seen Cheney do that, or Bush? Have we once seen actual emotion from the GOP ever? Biden is a guy who has been through real emotion. Losing a wife and daughter at one time is about as horriffic as it gets. The potential to lose a son to the iraq war is scaring the hell out of him, he admits it. Bush and Cheney never put thier kids up to go to war. Won't know how it feels if they were to come home in a body bag. Biden not only loves this country, he really loves the people, all of us. He isn't a problem for Obamma, he is an asset. He brings home the message, this is about all of us, and he gets our issues, listens when people write him and want him to investigate something. He does it. Bush and Pelosi block him from going farther. Biden isn't corporate, he is one of us. Let eh media have thier fun, when we go to vote them in, and we will, we and he get the last laugh.

If Biden can't censor himself and that big flapping moth of his he will wreck Obama's chances. I am a firm, dyed-in-the-wool Billary hater but I'm not sure that Biden is the best candidate to help keep McBush from winning this election. I shudder to think what will happen to the country if Obama loses.

When Pres. Bush shed one tear, ONE, at a service for another son/husband/brother who came home in a body bag, the media were all over it. "See!" the seemed to be saying, "He does too have human emotions". Still lacks a heart, brain, spine, but the tear ducts work just fine. (after pulling a nose hair)

I have so much respect for Joe Biden. He's a good guy, not afraid to say what he feels, and not too proud to admit when he makes a mistake. He's a role model, with a positive attitude. That is so refreshing in today's politics of cynicism.

I also like Biden's style. I don't see anything wrong with either statement. As far as referring to Senator Obama in part as articulate and 'clean', we older people always referred to good guys as 'clean cut'; nothing wrong with that. Regarding the 7-11's being run by 'Indians'; a lot of them are; Parkistani too, so what? Biden's funny and not always covering up just to be politically correct. I like him.

As a black woman, I have been on the receiving end of backwards "compliments" like, "you're so clean" or "you don't seem black" or "you don't talk black" (I went to law school---what am I supposed to sound like---"I be a lawyer, oh lawdy, I don't know nothing bout birthing no babies"??), by people who are basically ignorant of how those comments are received and haven't been around enough people of other races to understand. That being said, there are bigger issues to deal with right now than minor racially insenstive remarks. So while, at the time those statements were said, I was slightly offended, it just didn't rate as an important issue for me. I am enthusiastic about Biden as VP---and a few slightly insensitive comments should not be the sum of anyonen's life or career. I like Biden and think all in all he's a good person and smart as hell and will help Obama navigate the old Washington to turn it into the new Washington.

A man that cannot cry also cannot show or have real empathy for others. Bush/Cheney cry for no one but themselves, so it was easy for them to watch what happened after Katrina, to shield the bodies of our dead children shipped home in boxes, to tax the poor and elderly until they committ suicide. Yeah, I want a President and a VP who is very in touch with his emotions and manly enough to show a full range of feelings. McBush has one public emotion so far and that is anger. He is out of touch with his emotions and out of touch with ordinary people.
