CNN:

Vets for Freedom, a group of Iraq and Afghan combat veterans, is urging Sen. Barack Obama to acknowledge success of the surge in Iraq in a new ad airing Wednesday.

"Senator Barack Obama credits the improvements in Iraq to anything but the surge," says Sgt. Gabriel Herrera.

"But, I know the surge worked. I was there," Travis Quinlan adds.

It amazes me how these soldiers are willing to defend Bush and his cabinet for the mistake that they put them in. Not taking anything away from the soliders because they did what they were told to do. But I would think that after having the bush cabinet reject just about all the bills to help them while they are there, reject getting new equipment, amored vehicles and whatever else they needed, they wouldn't be so eager to talk up about this war.

I know they are proud but the accomplishment is not complete. I believe there are 8 things left on this plan to consider this war a victory but if you listen to McCain and Bush they just keep saying how the surge worked and we won't leave without victory. Please define Victory in this war. What will constitute victory in their eyes. It appears to me the troops feel it was successful but for some reason the repubs keep saying we not leaving till we have won. What else is there left to win? We need to leave and let them be and get on with their lives and start paying us back all this freaking money we have spent on this damn war.

The idea that there is a senate resolution just to say that the "SURGE" worked, backed by graham and lieberman, is patently idiotic. What is the f-ing point of this?

I passed a resolution after lunch stating that I succesfully ate a turkey sandwich.

HERE ARE THE FACTS:

In mid-2007, John McCain showed up for only four out of the past 14 Senate votes on Iraq.

In 2008 John McCain didn't show up for any votes on Iraq or veteran issues.

McCain‘s voting record of supporting the troops since the war in Iraq began:

April 2003, McCain "tabled the motion" to provide over $1 billion of National Guard and Reserve equipment.

October 2003, McCain "tabled" an amendment to provide an additional $322 million for safety equipment for U.S. troops in Iraq.

March 2004, McCain voted against eliminating abusive tax loopholes that would have increased veterans‘ medical care by $1.8 billion.

March 2006, McCain voted against closing corporate tax loopholes that would have increased veteran medical services by $1.5 billion.

April 2006, McCain voted against providing an extra $430 million for veteran outpatient care.

May 2006, McCain voted against $20 million for veteran health care facilities.

March 2007, McCain was a 'no show' on a resolution to start redeploying troops from Iraq by March 2008.

September 2007, McCain voted against Senator Webb‘s amendment that would put into place rest periods for troops in between deployments.

May 2008, McCain opposed Senator Webb‘s GI bill and was a 'no show' when the bill was voted on.

In 2008 McCain was a 'no show' for the resolution honoring the sacrifice made by the fallen.

Here are the facts:

The dems are starting to panic
Every day they get hit, bruises are getting painful
They have no defense
They do have the support of the Association of Neighborhood Organizers
Obama and his adopted daddy Biden are weaker together than they are individually

We have not come anywhere NEAR fixing what we have broken. We hammered this country into the stone age for no good reason. It's still in the stone age. Now all the warhawks are taking this brief decrease in violence as an opportunity to declare victory. It's sickening.

We were told so many lies, so what we're told about the surge might also be a lie...

It was SUPPOSED to buy time for the Iraqis to get their government together, to treat each other fairly regardless of religious sect, and get it on down the road.

That didn't happen.. The surge has destroyed even more Iraqis and infrastructure, and displaced more, and the republicans want to forget what it was for, and claim it was a success...

It wasn't, and everyone knows it. Even the republicans who want to use it for their advantage.

The surge has not work because the political reconcilliation which is the basis for the surge is not accomplished yet. Check it out on the article below.

In addition, I agree with a previous poster, 99% of the soldiers in Iraq would like to return home, and 99% of the service men and women state side do not want to go to Iraq including my husband. I don't know where McSame got those guys on the add from, but they are being used by McSame for his surge propaganda. Why doesn't McSame agree that the political reconcilliation has not happened in Iraq? This just shows how out of touch McSame is with the events in Iraq.

No to McSame and "Yes We Can" to President Obama

.
Perhaps a group of people in surge costumes [basic box with "surge" written on it] could dance with people in a POW box costumes while someone in a box costume labeled "made trivial with overuse" circled them at the repug convention.

As much as a respect the ordinary soldiers in Iraq, I strikes me that they would NOT be the most knowledgeable regarding whether or not the surge was working, as their understanding of the innumerable other factors at play is very likely minimal.

But the real question is how long will it keep working.

Saddam supposedly killed 500,000 and Bush killed 2 million Iraqis. I guess one would think that is
fair to fight for freedom. What nonsense. The surge has not worked since we are paying the Iraqis
not to attack us. And we are pulling out in 2012 I guess that means we won the war too eh?

I put myself in the place of a young Iraqi who does not want his country occupied. If I see no hope of the occupiers ever withdrawing I might risk my llife to fight them. If there is a chance that the occupiers will withdraw without my risking life and limb, I would certainly stand down and wait.

I think that the Iraqi's now see a chance that we will leave without continual war and that is why the violence in Iraq is subsiding.

These guys are hilarious. they will make you believe the surge worked and support McCain, and yet he continually turns his back on veterans of all wars!

The surge didn't work - what did work was maintaining a consistent presence in specific areas known to be problematic. Troop levels had nothing to do with it.
