Casey Shakes Convention Attendees From Torpor With "Four More Months" Line

Sitting up in the nosebleed seats at the Democratic National Convention, one was struck by how utterly distracted the audience was for large stretches of Tuesday night's program. Of course the night ended well, with a boisterous address from Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer and the roof-blowing finale from Sen. Hillary Clinton, though the crowd's attention was first engaged when Pennsylvania Sen. Bob Casey, Jr. bent the familiar "four more years" line into "four more months," approximately (but not quite) the amount of time left in President Bush's final term.

The phrase shook the crowd from its collective torpor almost immediately. While other speakers tried to berate the crowd into chanting along with their would-be slogans, Casey's meme took off organically, with the speaker wanting to move on before the crowd did. And after Casey left the stage, the crowd attempted to take up the chant anew -- only to be pre-empted by the convention house band.

Presumably, someone running this show will allow convention attendees to chant it a few more times tomorrow.

We picked up a few great lines last night:
No Way. No How. No McCain.
No Maverick but a Sidekick.
Drilling in McCain back yards and end up with a dry well.
Up America.

We are on a roll!!!!

I do not understand how the American public can ignore the fact that Casey and Biden are ignoring outright the fact that you can not be a Catholic and support abortion in any form. Yes, there are other issues, but the stand of the Church is that the Right to Life is paramont and not open for debate, period. Yes, McCain is an idiot! But, partial birth and late term abortion is an abomination. When was it a good time to abort Jesus. If you call yourself a Christian, you have to answer that question.

Keep religion out of politics. If you don't want abortion, work to prevent the causes, but the government has no business making private decisions for adults.

In light of recent events within the Catholic church, how dare they presume to tell ANYONE how to live. They have been the largest organized perpetrators of child abuse in the free world.

Religions are cults that tell adults that thinking for themselves is a crime. Ask questions and grow up.

I am a Catholic and yes, I think abortion is an awful thing... but the one thing I do realize is just because you make it illegal, doesn't mean it will go away. You can bury your head in the sand or hold your breath until your face turns blue, it just won't happen. So, I would be more inclined to believe you and your pro-life stance if I saw people like you acknowledge that abortion won't go away until you can reduce the number and provide REAL alternatives for those who feel their only option is abortion. A lot of women don't feel they can provide a good or safe life for a child. Not everyone has health insurance or the possibility of a future raising a child. There are a lot of women getting abortions and each one has their own reason for choosing abortion. Some may be callous and flippant about their choice, but I guarantee that most of them agonize over it and would rather have other options. But women have been aborting babies long before Roe v Wade. Pres. Bush and his bunch haven't done anything to lower the rates and probably have contributed to raising the number of abortions.

Unfortunately you must lack the depth to understand that a candidate can have a personal moral position and understand that it does not necessarily agree with a society's position. If you look at just the supreme court as an indication on how abortion is viewed by society.. the question is essentially a deadlock 5-4 split which could be overturned simply by the intorduction of one person either way. And so it is with society.

Morality is a tough thing to legislate especially when some pro-lif advocates believe in abolishing abortions even in cases of rape, incest and when the mothers life is at risk.

How can you be pro-life when you are willing to sacrfice a life to save a life. The philosphical argument is so difficult to qualify that even our nations top jurist go back and forth on the issue.

Stop being so sanctimonious and self-righteous.

Being a religious extremist or fundamentalist or literalist is far worse than being pro-choice. Historically, inflicting one's religious beliefs on others has caused and been used to justify the deaths/murders of millions of non-believers who chose not to believe. So-called Christians have enforced their religious choice on others for thousands of years. Religious zealots claim that the words of god are genuinely represented in whichever version of a bible their religious group subjectively pronounces as legitimate. And NEVER do they FULLY live their lives to reflect ALL the passages in their bible. They ALWAYS selectively pick and choose certain passages they declare resolute, while ALWAYS ignoring as many or more passages they choose to conveniently ignore. They is no one more self-centered, self-righteous, hypocritical or unrepresentative of the moral teachings of Jesus Christ than a politically motivated right-wing religious fascist.

Casey is pro-life. That was the point. That the Democratic party allows you to disagree but still welcomes you as a member.

From Michael Flynn at reasononline:
****

...he struck a rhetorical note that we don't want four more years, but just "four more months." This sparked the beginnings of a convention hall chant of "four more months", which pretty quickly petered out.

Someone must have looked at a calendar.

In four months it will be December 26th. The next President is sworn in on January 20, 2009. So, in "four more months", we'll have about one month left for the Bush Administration.

And these people want to set my tax rates?

yes, roughly four more months. Not 120 days. But in roughly four more months, give or take four or five days, it will be January, the "month" that GWB the WMD leaves office.

Concrete much?

"...in roughly four more months, give or take four or five days, it will be January..."

Thanks! That makes sense.

Maybe Casey is angling for Secretary of the Treasury...

It was a great speech and the 4 more months line could easily have been repeated by the crowd at other points in the evening. I was a little disappointed that they didn't use it again.

I'd like to add "ONLY four more months!".

Finally the truth. Anyone who thinks that McCain would be different from bush is well into delusion and denial.

Basically, this is the MOST IMPORTANT message from madame Sen. Hillary Clinton's speech ...

IF You support her and She supports Sen. Barack Obama, then YOU have to definitely support Sen. Obama for President of the United States of America ...

YOU KNOW WHY ???

Because SHE (Clinton) considers Sen. Barack Obama to be MORE QUALIFIED to lead our COUNTRY into the FUTURE ...

She IS a wise woman and I am going to believe in her ...

Democrats '08 ... ( and beyond ) ...
