David Duchovny In Rehab For Sex Addiction

Duchovny

LOS ANGELES — David Duchovny, who plays a sex-obsessed character on Showtime's "Californication," has entered a rehabilitation facility for sex addiction.

The 48-year-old actor said he did so voluntarily, in a statement released Thursday by his lawyer, Stanton Stein. He added: "I ask for respect and privacy for my wife and children as we deal with this situation as a family."

Duchovny's publicist, Flo Grace, confirmed the report, which first appeared on the Web site People.com. She and Stein both declined further comment.

"All of us at Showtime wish David and his family the best during this very private time," the network said in a statement.

The second season of "Californication" begins Sept. 28.

Duchovny starred as the conspiracy-minded Fox Mulder on "The X-Files" TV series and in two films. "The X-Files: I Want to Believe" opened in theaters earlier this summer.

He and his wife, actress Tea Leoni, have two children. The couple married in 1997.

I'm surprised. But greatly respect a man going for help instead of indulging in this gratification that he must have seen and known it was hurting him and his wife and kids. I'm impressed he's getting help--though I have to ask, couldn't he have hidden this? Gone undercover? Slip to another country and kept this private because when he gets out, the press is going to bounce on him and he'll be shown no mercy with the jokes and stupid questions "how many women before you knew it was an addiction, what was your lowest point?" Keep your head up David.

It could be worse for him and his kids... instead of having a supportive wife like Tea Leoni, he could have been married to Christie Brinkley and been publicly castrated for his failings.

@johncitizen 2008 - Agreed. Sex addiction is a diagnosis sprung straight out of prudery and symptomatic of a society obsessed with conformity.

"People who are having lots of great sex with people that they love and feel close to aren't considered sex addicts, and they don't need therapy," Ren said.

Some people who claim to suffer from sexual issues have "lots of sex, little feeling," she said.

"It's poor impulse control layered onto desperately unhappy relationships."

Great article, hotdowny.

Also...if "sex addition" is being used in this situation as a synonym for compulsive masturbation and pornography...well...is that fair? Doesn't pornography at least save as many marriages as it wrecks? And, if you're single...it's not a bad way to pass the time.

It's comments like the one above from CaptianInIndustry that seem thoughtless. Why is an actor a "creep" just because he's in a work titled Californication? And what do one's daughters have to do with anything???

I just wish there were some way for American society to retain it's childlike spirit and diversity without hanging on to this Puritanical madness, which wants to make everything the same.

Is this a case of reality imitating art or the other way around?

There is no such thing as sex addiction.

The biological world is teeming with it, and for millions of years its been the driving force of existence.

There must be more to this story, right? Or has another great male figure just given in to the insanity of a backward thinking society?

Oh well. As long as Bill Maher doesn't check into rehab...it'll be okay, I guess.

CBS did a nice pices on Sex Addiction - my questions is the same as many others - Is Sex addiction a real mental illness - is it an addiction or is it qualified as an obsessive compulsive disorder.........

He might be able to share a room with John Edwards or Bill Clinton. I have a feeling Mulder doesn't like tralier trash, though. That's a special type of addiction.

It is really kind of pathetic. I saw Duchovny on a late night talk show a few weeks ago and was shocked at how seedy he looked. His poor wife.

All men are sex addicts. Many just can't do very much about it.

This story is incomplete to say the least. Was the guy making too many demands on his stunning Hollywood wife to satisfy his "addiction"?

Was he going outside of his marriage to satisfy said 'addiction"? Why would he release a statement requesting respect for his family's privacy when so little information is offered in the first place?

Scully!
