DENVER — John McCain tapped little-known Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin to be his vice presidential running mate on Friday in a startling selection on the eve of the Republican National Convention.

Two senior campaign officials disclosed McCain's decision a few hours before the Republican presidential nominee-to-be and his newly-minted running mate appeared at a rally in swing-state Ohio.

Palin, like McCain, is a conservative with a maverick streak who has shown a willingness to clash with others in her own party. A self-styled hockey mom and political reformer, she has been governor of her state less than two years.

Palin's selection shocked numerous Republican officials.

At 44, Palin is a generation younger that Sen. Joseph Biden of Delaware, who is Barack Obama's running mate on the Democratic ticket.

She is three years Obama's junior, as well _ and McCain has made much in recent weeks of Obama's relative lack of experience in foreign policy and defense matters.

In making his pick, McCain passed over several more prominent prospects who had figured in speculation for months _ Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge among them.

Palin flew overnight to an airport in Ohio near Dayton, and even as she awaited her formal introduction, some aides said they had believed she was at home in Alaska.

She is a former mayor of Wasilla who became governor of her state in December, 2006 after ousting a governor of her own party in a primary and then dispatching a former governor in the general election.

More recently, she has come under the scrutiny of an investigation by the Republican-controlled legislature into the possibility that she ordered the dismissal of Alaska's public safety commissioner because he would not fire her former brother-in-law as a state trooper.

The timing of McCain's selection appeared designed to limit any political gain Obama yields from his own convention, which ended Thursday night with his nominating acceptance speech before an estimated 84,000 in Invesco Field in Colorado.

Public opinion polls show a close race between Obama and McCain, and with scarcely two months remaining until the election, neither contender can allow the other to jump out to a big post-convention lead.

McCain has had months to consider his choice, and has made it clear to reporters that one of his overriding goals was to avoid a situation like the one in 1988, when Dan Quayle was thrown into a national campaign with little preparation.

Palin has a long history of run-ins with the Alaska GOP hierarchy, giving her genuine maverick status and reformer credentials that could complement McCain's image.

Two years ago, she ousted the state's Republican incumbent governor, Frank Murkowski in the primary, despite having little money and little establishment backing.

She has also distanced herself from two senior Republican office-holders, sen. Ted Stevens and Rep. Don young. Both men are under federal corruption investigations.

She had earned stripes _ and enmity _ after Murkowski made her head of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission. From that post, she exposed ethical violations by the state GOP chairman, also a fellow commissioner.

She and her husband Todd Palin, have five children. The latest, a baby, was born with Down syndrome.

This choice is a Smack in the face to a Strong fighter for women like Hillary Clinton, and such a sham to fool Hillary supporters to even think of voting for the Same ol politic the Republicans play........
The Republicans were the worst critics of Hillary, and made the most sexist comments one could ever hear........
The pick is a joke a sham, so please do not be fooled.
The McCain agenda is still the Same agenda.....
be on the look out for the next Carl Rove endorsed ad form the campaign
They will tell you next, that riding the subway is un American and expect you to believe it.
WAKE UP AMERICA !!!!
Hillary will play an important role in the Obama/Biden Administration..She and they will fight for better and more affordable healthcare for All Americans. Instead of seeking to destabilize the best part of our current healthcare system as John McSame has pledged to do.
have no doubt.

Those Republicans are crafty. Just never for Hard Working Tax Paying Americans. This is evident in the last 8 yrs. Remember they took over the house and Senate in 2001 then they got a Republican president to boot because we were asleep at the wheel after our votes were stolen in 2000.

They had the power to pass laws, and strip our civil rights as citizens...they did, and Americans lost job, lost industries, lost homes lost safety,

If they used half of their intelligence and craftiness to help America be better, instead of tearing down and ripping thru our constitutional rights.

We, America would be so much farther along in all aspects of life and world leadership.

But no they sell us out at every turn. And regardless of the VP pick, the Republican agenda will still seek to overturn Roe v Wade; Will not address Pay in equities for Women and minorities.

Will destroy our current healthcare system and leave the employed and unemployed at the nonexistent mercy of the Free markets,

Their policies will push us further into deficits that our children, our children’s’ children will still be paying on 100 yrs from now.

And lastly for now McCain still wants to be at war somewhere in the world for 100years…at a cost of 10 billion per month…….

Americans must Wake up and Fight for what is good for all of America or our future is in dire peril………

OBAMA/BIDEN 08
FOR CHANGE

Question : "Senator McCain, what about Mrs Palin foreign policy experience ?"

Answer : "Well, huh! She's a hockey Mom and we all know it's an international sport. There you go. And she goes to The International House of Pancakes regularly."

This VP pick is a combination of Clarence Thomas and Dan Quayle. The expectations will be very low--a game the republicans are good at playing.

What a slap in the face!
Mitt Romney and Pawlenty must be piss*d! After all the fuss about Obama not choosing the second place person. McCain does not choose any of the Republican top three. I guess his ego could not take having what the other candidates said about him in the press come back to hit him in the as*.

Interesting choice! I've lived in Alaska and in Wasilla when Palin was first elected as the Mayor of that town. Her conservative values are rational and of the non-rabid type. Her positon in the state of Alaska has been one that has not simply rubberstamped the State's GOP agenda and even has exposed corruption that was emanating from herown party. Good for her and good for Alaska....and good for Obama because as noble as her selection by McCain maybe, she is NOT going to cause many non-voters, or young voters, or disenfranchised urban voters, or women voters who are not already voting for McCain to vote for him and very few women will switch from their Dem affiliation simply to vote for a woman without regard for her leadership ability and experience. Nice try, McCain, and good Luck Sara...you're both going to need it.

The demagoguery of Republicans knows no bounds, and they are more than welcome to have the gender voters. This will only make the Democrats stronger.

Well, if the dems don't want the "gender" votes, we'll be glad to take them off your hands! I don't quite see how that will make the dems stronger, but if you think that will work for your party, we'd be glad to help you out!

I don't know how the GOP thinks Palin will make them stronger. That's a laughable concept.

This is ridiculous. But I am told all goes in politics. Is this woman (and mind you, I am a woman too) ready to lead the country once McCain chokes on fish bone and croaks. Are you kidding me??? And there are all these shady things about Sarah palin under investigation, her husband working for BP...makes me shudder.

How many of you have had a four month old infant?

She also has four other children!

I know when I had two children and had my third I did not have the energy to put on my makeup, let enough lead a nation.

Where was McCains brain ?!?!?!

She is probably a bit more qualified than BO......what exactly does being a "community organizer" prepare him for? Check out this lady's resume.....it might surprise you - and she has done it while raising a family.

Palin has never even stood on the national stage and when she does I bet she falters and it's going to be funny watching the GOP try to explain it.

She's going to look clueless when the debates start and it will become apparent to the GOP that they made a huge mistake, as if picking McCain wasn't a big enough mistake to begin with.

I'm glad your party choose this woman, because you could have actually picked someone who was qualified to do the job or someone who was actually popular with voters.

If I was excited about the election last night I am positively glowing about it today, thanks to McCain's wonderful pick for VP.

Are you sure the GOP isn't trying to throw the election to the Democrats?

Wow, Palin is so tied to the oil and gas industry it's not even funny. She is the 2008 Chairman of the IOGCC (The Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission ). They're going to go after the "drill at home, drill now" crowd - playing to the lowest common denominator of intelligence. What a bunch of knuckle-dragging neophites these people are.

After his lack luster perfomance last night, I am not sure your statement rings true. The "hollywood" set he had built was more impressive than his speech. He really had nothing new to say, nor did he give specifics in regards to how he would carry out even the most bland proposals he talked about.

Please, what performance were you watching? The reaction was unanimous, Obama nailed it. Even your own Republicans were sniveling last night on CNN saying whoever wasn't McCain's VP pick was lucky.

This election is Obama's to lose, and I guess if I were in your position I would be a bitter little tr0ll as well.

Your party is in trouble, about to go the way of the Whigs and the funniest past about it is that you brought it on yourselves by trying to implement all the policies you thought were so great, but in action they failed. What a surprise.

I don't think this selection is going to sway the Hillary supporters to McCain. Any woman considering voting for McCain-Palin needs to look at her record - www.ontheissues.org

Strongly pro-choice
Strongly favors the death penalty
Strong opposes gun control
Does not support more funding for health care
Strongly pushing to open oil drilling in the ANWR

This election isn't about gender - it's about the future of Americam and Palin is as out of touch as McCain is.
