Obama: Let's hope lessons of Katrina were learned

BOARDMAN, Ohio — Barack Obama expressed hope Saturday that the lessons learned from Hurricane Katrina three years ago would help to protect the Gulf Coast from Hurricane Gustav this time. His running mate, Joe Biden, urged people to pray that the levees in New Orleans hold.

Obama and Biden visited a diner in this Youngstown suburb, an area that Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton carried during her failed presidential bid. Trying to connect with those who are economically struggling, the Democratic candidates and their wives chatted with diners and told reporters that a properly orchestrated evacuation would be key to protecting the Gulf Coast.

"It wasn't last time, and hopefully we've learned from that tragedy," Obama told reporters as he left the diner, heading to a memorial service for the late Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones, the first black woman to represent Ohio in Congress. She died Aug. 20 from a brain hemorrhage caused by a ruptured aneurysm.

On the way to an evening rally in the Columbus area, Obama spokes to Federal Emergency Management Agency chief David Paulison, Louisiana Sen. Mary Landrieu and New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin. He also spoke with Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal.

Biden also spoke with Jindal and messaged Landrieu.

While at the capital-area rally in Dublin, he joked about the marathon primary season: "After 19 months of traversing through every state except Alaska," Obama began, referencing the home state of John McCain's vice presidential pick Sarah Palin and earning laughs. "Which now that I think about it, we're going to have to go there now."

Northeast Ohio, a Rust Belt region where the economy has struggled, supported Clinton's presidential bid back in March. Obama carried the Democratic stronghold of Cuyahoga County, with Cleveland, but lost 83 of 88 counties.

Since then, Obama has been a frequent visitor in the area, trying to connect with the white, working-class voters who have eluded him thus far.

Biden said the Gulf Coast appears better prepared for a major hurricane this time than it was for Katrina, which left New Orleans and surrounding areas submerged. He said it appeared officials had learned from Katrina, and he praised moves to make major highways one-way routes out of the storm-targeted areas.

"It looks like they're incredibly well prepared, much better than they had before," Biden said. "Just pray to God that those levees hold."

The Bush administration's handling of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 has been lambasted by both parties' presidential candidates. Republican John McCain has called the response shameful, and Obama regularly blasts President Bush.

Gustav gathered strength as it barreled toward Cuba on Saturday, on track to hit the U.S. Gulf Coast. The storm already has killed 78 people in the Caribbean.

Speaking of Katrina, McCain voted against (twice) an Independant Comission into Katrina response and then lied about it in NOLA. Said he "always voted in favor of..."

What Bush had to offer on Katrina, along with his deal to sell US port operations to UAE for 100 million $ and tried to quietly push it through.

BHO should make the first move and call McSame and offer to co-chair/lead the relief effort. BHO should reach out to GWB and do the same.

Leadership doesn't begin just because an oath of office is sworn.

All eyes are on the GOP right now. They will either milk this for everything they can or provide a top-notched response.

But wait, aren't all our national guard troops overseas??? Where will the manpower come from?

BHO and his team should lead a large relief effort.

He should also be very vigilant of any efforts to politicize this potential disaster.

No one should use any footage in ads.

Let's see what the candidates do.

Yeah, the lesson was that if you have a Category 3+ hurricane hitting a coastal city that's below sea level and a large number of the population refuses to evacuate . . . you're gonna have a problem.

McCain is willing to spend billions of dollars in Iraq to prop up his manhood but only offers an acceptance speech for a political office to prop up his humanity.

Bush will have NOLA clean in a day this time. It will show what a republican goverment can accomplish when it's an election year.

Hope is good and all Barack, but hope is sorely misplaced in the Bush administration. The answer is "no" they did not learn from Katrina.

The hell with the politics, people!

We are talking about human lives here; THAT is what is important. Death and destruction doesn't have a (D) or (R) after it. Let's just hope everyone gets out safely, families stay together, and the area comes through Gustav as best as it can.

And PLEASE let's hope politicians and don't take advantage of the situation for personal gain. What a soulless thing to do at the expense of your brothers and sisters. It would truly disgust me to no end if it happened.

Godspeed to all in the area...thoughts and prayers will guide you.

I do not care who you are voting for. Let's help our neighbors in New Orleans, Mississippi, and other states affected by the Hurricane.

the only reason why fema is attacking so quickly is because the governor of louisiana is a republican! they made gov blanco the scape goat because was a dem. that is the lesson they learned and lived by. as long as you're a republican, you're fine with us. if you're a dem, good luck.
10:30 PM on 08/30/2008
You are so right. Now that there's a republican there as governor - suddenly all this help is materializing. The Katrina event was one of the most shameful moments in US history - how our US citizens were treated and Bush called these good citizens who were suffering "Refugees." Excuse me?? They were totally neglected and it was a shameful thing to do by the Bush admin.

The Gov and the Mayor were too busy arguing on who was in charge .You
remember the dem mayor blaming the dem gov for the fiasco?
01:29 AM on 08/31/2008
And the best Obama can say is "lets hope lessons of katrina were learned" wow I would be expeciing something a bit more forceful than that,.Once again a failure to perform unless it is scripted.

It is not yet his place to do anything down there. Organizing help and working for the good of the people and staying out of the way is the best thing for now for both of the candidates.

After it is over then assess and assist. But to go down there and get in the way and cause extra stress to the security and evacuation would be totally the wrong thing to do.

All the hotel rooms will be needed by the workers and the displaced. Don't cause any more trouble for them for your little photo op.

Mc Shame is full of it. He was celebrating his 400th birthday with Dubya while people were drowning and watching their homes and memories float away. Happy F**king Birthday Johnny boy!

Rex - I suppose you were boxing up care packages for the afflicted area when the storms were raging. Too bad that didn't make the news.
11:20 PM on 08/30/2008
Wow! It's surprising how much you think you know about me! Fool.

You have no idea what I have contributed or how much I assisted down there nor do I need to defend those actions to the likes of you, so go back to the McCave you crawled out of and just leave the humanitarian work to humans since that is what your ilk are used to doing anyway.

Exactly, does McCain think that we forgot about the birthday cake photo while the victims of Katrina were suffering. He was with Bush at the time.

Thank you for praying for my beautiful city of New Orleans. We are packing the cars now and hope to leave around midnight to head north. The 2 dogs will be going with us (as always). We can't help but look around at everything we must leave and wonder if we will ever see our belongings again. Please keep us in your thoughts. We love our city.

Will future American historians look back on the events of this week and refer to them as the "Palin-Gustav Disaster"?

joeyp404 - you might educate yourself on Obama's numerous visits to the area and his legislation introduced and co-sponsored since Katrina. What has McCain done?! Nothing - but celebrate his birthday!

I will help you come out of your ignorance. Follow this link:

I'm aware of that. Thanks, vomit. But you didn't answe my question.
12:49 AM on 08/31/2008
Because a.) unlike Illinois, it's not his constituency. He had a much more valid, less pandering reason to be at the levees in IL. b.) he went to a place that hadn't yet been flooded as much, obviously to try and prevent that, but also so he wouldn't get in the way of the flood evacuation that needed to take place. His going down to a place where a Hurricane might hit, when everyone else is being evacuated, would be a drain on needed resources to deal with this. Do you know how much it takes to coordinate all the local law enforcement and Secret Service alone?

Which is why the Rethugs shouldn't go down there either, at least not before or during it. It would take away from the needed job the emergency services/FEMA need to do.

Obama has spoken up many times on the issue of Katrinna and New Orleans.
Sometimes he seems genuinely interested in helping, and other times he is just part of the big BS machine that sells us lie after lie.

Saying "let's hope we learned our lessons..." blatantly ignores the fact that we have not. Hell we can barely talk about the real nature of what went wrong in the first place.

What more do you expect of Obama. He spoke of the Katrina many times. He is the POTUS yet. You want him to lie in front of it. Give the man a break please!

YOu should be yelling at the Senator and Congressperson form LA. Illinois has nothing to do with LA getting the help that is needed. He has done 100time more than Mccain.

http://thinkonthesethings.wordpress.com/2007/08/29/when-the-cameras-are-off-barack-obamas-hurricane-katrina-record/

Plus he was talking about get out. He knows the Levees are not repaired. He said that in his speech on Thursday.
