As numerous outlets have reported upon McCain's choosing of Sarah Palin to be his running mate, the Alaska governor, who has a reputation for being a reformer in a state fraught with corruption, faces her own state ethics investigation.

The basics, from Bloomberg News:

The Alaska Legislature voted last month to investigate allegations that Palin dismissed the state's public safety commissioner after the official resisted pressure to fire a state trooper involved in a contentious divorce from Palin's sister.

The Legislature has hired a former district attorney to investigate the case and asked him to issue a report by Oct. 31, just before the Nov. 4 general election, state Senator Hollis French said in an interview.

The vote by the Legislative Council to authorize the probe was unanimous, said French, a Democrat from West Anchorage. The council conducts state business when the Legislature isn't in formal session.

Palin fired the public safety commissioner, Walt Monegan, on July 11. Several days later, Monegan said he had been pressured by members of Palin's administration and family to fire state trooper Mike Wooten, according to the Anchorage Daily News.

French said it ``remains to be seen'' whether the investigation embarrasses Palin. The important issue, he said, will be whether evidence emerges that ties Palin directly to efforts to pressure Monegan.

ABC's Blotter blog, which has a well-detailed account of the history of the incidents that led to the investigation, notes that Palin "is likely to be deposed soon in the case, according to State Sen. Hollis French, who leads the state Senate's Legislative Counsel Committee."

Walt Monegan, who was fired by Palin, gave an interview to the Washington Post Friday in which he discussed the background of the case:

Monegan, 57, a respected former chief of the Anchorage Police Department, said in an interview with The Washington Post's James V. Grimaldi on Friday that the governor repeatedly brought up the topic of her ex-brother-in-law, Michael Wooten, after Monegan became the state's commissioner of public safety in December 2006. Palin's husband, Todd, met with Monegan and presented a dossier of information about Wooten, who was going through a bitter custody battle with Palin's sister, Molly. Monegan also said Sarah Palin sent him e-mails on the subject, but Monegan declined to disclose them, saying he planned to give them to a legislative investigator looking into the matter.

Palin initially denied that she or anyone in her administration had ever pressured Monegan to fire the trooper, but this summer acknowledged more than a half a dozen contacts over the matter, including one phone call from a Palin administration official to a state police lieutenant. The call was recorded and was released by Palin's office this month. Todd Palin told a television reporter in Alaska that he did meet with Monegan, but said he was just "informing" Monegan about the issue, not exerting pressure.

"She never directly asked me to fire him," Monegan said.

Obama said leave the families out of it! As long as her children are being taken care of it is none of our business. There are so many issues to fight McCain and Paline on. Her views on birth control, that Sarah thinks it is OK for her 17 year old to get married! You can question her abuse of power and obtaining an absurd amount of money for her small town. You can question her views of global warming, her stance on the war in IRAQ, her lack of funding to help special needs children, You can attack her flip flopping on the bridge to nowhere. You can attack that she decreased funding to give pregnant teens prenatal care, I do not support Sarah Politically but I support her as a mother! McCain is the person running for president. McCain wants to continue to same failed policies that George Bush has brought to us. McCain is out of touch with the middle class and brings more of the same. McCain has no plan except drill, war and make the oil companies richer and take away a woman right to choose. I do not agree with McCain but he served his country with integrity but being a POW dosn't make him the best candidate for president. Stop the attacks of Sarah's family and attack her political views and actions as a politician

There is another issue to the Gov. Palin ethics investigation and that is how divorced fathers are treated. The goal of the Palin family in this incident was to destroy the reputation of a man so that he would lose custody of his children. That in and of itself is wrong. Mr. Palin participated in the hiring of a private investigator to follow his ex-brother in law and document his behavior. Palin turned the documentation over to his ex-brother in law's boss, and I'm sure it went to family court as well. Then, the Palins followed-up and asked why the man hadn't been fired. That behavior is despicable enough without the subsequent firing of the boss.

It is very easy for fathers to lose their children to rumors/hearsay/false allegations and exaggerated perceptions of behavior. Even if a father shares joint custody with his children's mother, she and her family and friends can easily spread hatred and fear of the father to the children. Then they turn around and blame the father for being "absent" or "dead-beat."

I do hope Mr. Wooten gets custody of his kids.

I don't know where you folks live, but I know down here in the South the departments of "public safety" are a great big good 'ole boy network who cover for and defend each other in spite of legitiate claims for abuse, etc. I have a friend who was assaulted by a County Sheriff in the parking lot of a Target store - can you believe it! She pressed charges and has been under significant pressure from all levels of the sheriff's department to drop the charges. She says she is on the verge of obtaining an attorney to defend herself from this attack.

The Director of Public Safety is responsible for the conduct of their officers. He could not be responsible for behavior he was not aware. It was the families responsibility to make sure he was. Would you do less for your family member. If it turns out that the officer was guilty of unprofessional behavior and the director ignored such then the Governor would be negligent if she ignored it.

Troopergate from the Anchorage Daily News on Aug 17:

Palin can't seem to admit she erred

Gov. Palin is revealing her ugly side during this, her toughest political battle to date. As she continues to dig a deeper hole for herself day by day in the so-called Troopergate scandal, the more desperate she appears. Sarah Palin is not handling the pressure well.

and

Remember all the complaints the Palin family filed against Wooten have been investigated and punishment was rendered. The governor might not have liked the outcome, but it was taken before Monegan was commissioner. Demanding further action of Monegan is a clear violation of the state's personnel rules and something Monegan simply could not do.

But there is something in Sarah Palin's personality that prohibits her from saying, "I screwed up." She seems to obsess on something and will do almost anything to get her way.

http://www.adn.com/opinion/story/496302.html

Now that she's the VP candidate, I'm sure this investigation will vindicate her.

Does undue pressure put upon an employee, have to be direct? I am not a lawyer but I don't think so!
Just the FACT that these issues were addressed, poses a subtle threat!

TODD PALIN TOLD A TELEVISION REPORTER, IN ALASKA, THAT YES HE DID MEET WITH MONEGAN, BUT IT WAS ONLY TO GIVE MONEGAN INFORMATION ABOUT THE ISSUE HE WAS NOT TRYING TO PRESSURE HIM......GIVE ME A BREAK, THIS ADDRESSING OF THIS VERY PRIVATE PALIN ISSUE, FOLLOWED UP IMMEDIATELY WITH MONEGAN'S FIRING IS VERY SUSPECT INDEED.

I hope that Monegan has all of the taped telephone conversations, and e-mails which should more than help him to now make his case, and yes I hope that Gov. Sarah Palin, is made to face her ABUSE OF PUBLIC OFFICE FOR PERSONAL GAIN (her sister 's private divorce issues)!

BY THE WAY ......................did John McCain properly vet Sarah Palin before making her his running mate? or has he got plans to have the case thrown out by his many POCKET JUSTICES?

It is going to be really interesting to see just HOW THIS WILL PLAY OUT IN DAYS TO COME.

Thus far there is only one conversation taped, but Gov. Palin has admitted belatedly that there were over a dozen calls to Monegan. The calls from Sen. Dominici to US Attorney Iglesias is indicative of pressure from above. When someone holds the power to fire you, their requests can feel like pressure.

That's why even making the call is considered an ethics violation.

The story line from Governor Palin is that she was concerned about the threat of domestic violence directed against her sister and her children as the reason she or her office got involved in the attempt to fire Trooper Wooten does not make any sense.
It is against federal law for a person convicted of any level offense (from minor non-traffic $10.00 fine through felony) of violence directed against a spouse or partner to own or possess any firearm or ammunition.
If Wooten had been involved in a case of domestic violence the Alaska State Police would have been required to terminate Wooten's employment because he could not lawfully carry a weapon and the involvement of the governor, her husband or staff would not have been required and should not have been an issue.
Since it appears that the claim is that they were afraid but too afraid to call the police to file a complaint, but felt comfortable to calling, seeing and e-mailing the State Director of Public Safety several times does not make sense either.
So, is governor Palin somehow involved in the attempt to strip a citizen of their right to keep and bear arms while attempting to have that citizen fired, for cause thereby destroying his career as well?
Are these the actions of a life member of the NRA and person that lives the hunting & fishing lifestyle?
Time will tell.

Wooten wasn't convicted of a crime. That was the problem. Instead, the investigation found that he had tasered his 11-year-old stepson, illegally shot a moose, drank in his patrol car, and threatened to kill Palin's father. The authorities under Monegan thought that warranted a 12-day suspension, reduced to 5 days.

Apparently, all that doesn't merit prosecution in Alaska.

In Wooten's own words:

"So we went in our living room and I had him get down on his knees so he wouldn't fall. And I taped the probes to him and turned the Taser on for like a second, turned it off. He thought that was the greatest thing in the world, wanted to do it again."

Do you people really want a Walt Monegan running your police departments? Seriously?

If you don't want to vote for her, don't vote for here because she's too inexperienced to be a heartbeat away from the presidency, or because she's pro-gun, pro-life, or a hundred other better reasons than this.

I'd wager the bush/cheney corruption machine could fix Sarah's problems with a single phone call. After all, they have the best legal team that threats, lies, constitutional subversion and money cay buy. In other words, much of the judicial branch or 'our' (haha) government.

She'll have to win to properly follow in the footsteps of the late great Spiro Agnew. Then McCain could appoint who he really wants: Joe Lieberman--our first Jewish President.

This does tend (if accurate) to say Palin is mean spirited... In the name of so called "protecting her sister', Palin got someone who would not fire and punish the sister's Trooper husband, fired... So, a supposedly mean and vicious Trooper, is going to lose all he worked for and not retaliate? And, get a man fired who won't cave to the pressure? If I wanted to protect my sister from a supposed abuser, I would NOT set out to make life bad for that supposed abuser...No, no, no, no...... NO!

And the supposed abuse was brought up AFTER a Divorce was filed for...

I checked... Alaska has a "No Fault" Divorce Statute...

We're not upset. If you were smart, you'd be upset. This lady has more than her fair share of ethical problems, especially for having such a short history.

McSame did himself NO favors picking this one. She's ripe for the picking.

Obama is a bit green, but looks like an elder statesman next to Palin. We are upset because if that old bastard McSame manages to win he will die in office and leave the one-term governor of a backwater POTUS! Don't you righties ever think? What is wrong with you people?

I have to agree with pupbayer. I don't understand why the left wingers are so unhappy about McCain's choice. If Palin is sooo bad, you can all rest easy. By the way, Palin's got more experience than Obama & Hillary put together.

unhappy, I'm effing jubilant. This is an absolute demonstration of how poor McBush's judgment is. She's under investigation for ethics violations by her OWN state's legislature & the House AND Senate in Alaska are Republican controlled. Her OWN effing part is investigating her!

This is a decision made from fear without adequate vetting. It shows that McBush is unqualified to be President and his advisors and staffers are not qualified to be advisors to a US President or White Staff, which is where they will go if McBush wins.

psst, IN-D, (you must be new around here. If you start saying you agree with Pup, you're might as well jump up and down and say you're a syncophant of the Failure Party and not an Independent..

The tepid interest in this from MSM or the GOP vetting process gurus should come as no surprise.

They do not view corruption or unethical behavior in the same way as other Americans do.

And THAT should be a campaign issue---if she's all about ethics reform, how does she account for her behavior?

Will her cancer-laughter (see earlier articles and reports about her lack of civility) help or haunt her?

I'm sure this is EXACTLY what the McSame-Rove team was hoping for: an all-out Dem meltdown.

Unfortunately, they keep underestimating the American electorate.

The investigation turned up no proof of her allegations which is why he was never terminated. For all we know, she was making this all up to get him fired. WHERE IS THE PROOF? Same goes for her investigation, they have to have proof although they seemed to have enough information to investigate.

Daddy tased the boy at the boy's request on a safety setting. The boy wanted to be tased again to show how macho he was. All the stuff raised by Ms. Palin against her brother-in-law was addressed by his superiors. Ms. Palin illegally used her office to pursue him AND his boss.

Read a little about your heroine before you get too cozy with her. McCain should have!!
