Gawker Managing Editor: Denton Plays The Fear Card

Gawker Managing Editor/Supreme Overlord Nick Denton is stepping down after eight months of steering the ship and cracking the whip on himself for not enough pageviews. He's got to get back to the business of being a ridiculously successful new-media mogul, so he's looking for a replacement. And he thinks YOU should work for Gawker! Why? Because pretty soon, you won't have any other options:

But here's the main reason you should apply. Many magazines and newspapers will wrestle with their transition to the internet over the next few years. They cannot provide secure employment. Not that an internet-only company like Gawker Media can make cast-iron guarantees. But a successful occupant of the position will make a name for themselves and establish their internet credentials. If you're tough and ambitious, this is a great job.

...and if you're not, you're screwed.

Do you doubt it? If so, look no further than Gawker's last managing editor, Choire Sicha, driven once again into full-time employment through sheer desperation:

There's not much for a reporter or an editor to do these days! For instance, a headhunter wrote me the other day about the overnight politics editor job now open at the HuffPo, and I had six overqualified candidates to recommend off the top of my head. And have you noticed how no one leaves their jobs anymore? So look out, suckers--I took the last media job in the world! I am SELFISH.

Turns out it's NOT the last media job in the world, Choire! So maybe you can go back to Gawker for the third time (or, if Jared Kushner will forgive you, back to the Observer for the third time) (actually, I like you at Radar. Just stop being mean to me).

So: While Nick Denton bows out to devote more time to the artful maintenance of a just-so stubbled chin, picking out the perfect striped shirt and having a very large head, get that resume in order! But please don't send it to me, I actually don't know much about that HuffPo job.
