Palin

Determined, at least for the moment, to avoid even a hint of replicating the forced withdrawal in 1972 of Vice Presidential nominee Thomas Eagleton, Republicans here are uniformly claiming that absolutely no one - except the press - has discussed, mentioned or even hinted at the possibility that John McCain may have to bump Sarah Palin off the ticket.

"Hell no! No hint of that! None! Nada," declared Republican Pollster Whit Ayres. "All of the talk is exactly the other way," he said, claiming to be stunned by a reporter's inquiry. Palin, he said, "has energized this convention. These people [delegates] are fired up about her. Now they are going to work their hearts out for her."

On the record and off the record, Republican strategists are putting up a nearly united front in a drive to quash public speculation that the growing controversies surrounding the Palin pick, and the growing body of evidence that only a superficial background check of the Alaska Governor was conducted, are forcing the McCain campaign to rethink its choice.

Among the many news stories that have followed the selection of Palin are: There is a special investigation underway into Palin's decision to fire the state Public Safety Commissioner; her 17-year-old daughter is pregnant; her husband has been active in an Alaska secession movement and she has attended meetings of the secessionist organization; Palin helped run a '527' third party political group of the kind McCain has adamantly criticized in the past; and she has come under fire for spending little time with her newborn Downs Syndrome child.

The Republican 'Omerta' strategy is, as one lonely GOP source noted to the Huffington Post, not credible. "Of course people talk about it [pulling Palin off the ticket] over a drink or at breakfast. Everyone agrees that it's not in the cards now, but it's crazy to tell you animals [reporters] that there is a total vacuum of thought."

That note of realism does not, however, prevent the cadre of strategists and operatives here from toeing the line. "There has not been any talk that I've heard," one well-connected player here contended. "Everyone is locking in on her." This source did not declare that a change in the number two spot is forever off the table, however. "He [McCain] is not going to do it unless something that is completely off the radar now comes up."

The McCain campaign and the RNC have issued Palin talking points to delegates who face constant questioning from local and national press about the qualifications of McCain's choice and the floodtide of disclosures about her past and her family. Marc Ambinder posted a campaign email marked, "INTERNAL DOCUMENT - NOT TO BE EMAILED BEYOND CURRENT DISTRIBUTION LIST." It told loyal party members what to say when questioned about Palin's family issues:

"Please see the following points on Gov. Palin's family.

" * Governor Palin and her husband Todd have a loving family and their children mean everything to them. When their oldest daughter Bristol came to them with news that she was expecting a child they embraced her and gave her nothing but unconditional love and support.

"* This is a very personal matter for the family. We should all respect the love they have for the child and the desire all parents would have for their children's privacy.

"* The media should respect Bristol's privacy. That's always been the tradition and practice when it comes to the children of candidates.

"* (If pressed) The children of candidates do not choose to run for office and be thrust into the spotlight."

Thomas Eagleton was announced on July 14, 1972, as George McGovern's Vice Presidential pick, but news stories soon disclosed that he had received psychiatric care for depression, including electroshock therapy. Just over two weeks later, on August 1, Eagleton withdrew at McGovern's request and was replaced by Ted Kennedy-in-law Sargent Shriver.

As of Tuesday night, Intrade, the political futures market, was offering gamblers convinced that Palin will withdraw 8.3-to-1 odds: that anyone betting $12 dollars that Palin would be off the ticket before November 4 would get $100 back if they were proved right.

Palin is a last minute thought by McCain who on his own could not rally his base. They use spin to blame the "Liberal Media" for being sexist, yet Palin herself called Hillary Clinton a whiner when she felt she was scrutinized by the media. Hypocrisy? Yes! Palin also in her speech eluded to the Bridge to Nowhere, after wining her race for Governor she was against it.
A new name even Republicans never heard all have the same mantra about Palin. Giuliani was mean and nasty attacking both Obama and Biden. Not once did we hear about a plan for the middle class who are suffering. I think the GOP has amnesia. The last eight years were governed by a republican George W Bush. Do they really think we Americans will fall for their promises? Eight long years will not become twelve as McCain has pandered to the parties base and promised to continue the Bush politics. We who want change now Obama is the only one who can deliver. Obama 2008!

I hate the GOP for what they have done to destroy the moral fabric of our country and constitution-the greediest phony convention I ever saw . They should just call themselves The American Terrorist Party

And how much has the author of this article bet on her withdrawing? You could make a heck of a lot of money...if you are right.

The reason for the omerta is they haven't got a clue what to do. This is a classic "damned if you do and damned if you don't."

It's not the issue of her daughter that might get her bumped from the ticket, but all the corruption she's involved in. With Peggy Noonan declaring that Palin is a big mistake, we may well rest assured that Karl Rove is dead as a political consultant.

Has anyone considered that this whole Palin thing may be merely a maneuver to get Lieberman on the ticket? Remember how effective the trick was for Bush. He proposed Harriet Myers, totally unqualified for the position, then withdrew and got his desired candidate through.

And possibly a way to get McCain to back out before the convention is over. That's worrying me. Big Mac is unelectable at this point. Rather face him than Mitt.

I've thought about that, too. Romney is another choice.

If the nominee is going to be changed, it will have to be fast. In New Jersey a candidate who withdraws from the ballot must notify the Secretary of State by September 16 in order to have another name placed on the ballot. This is probably true in most states, with different deadlines in each state. McCain and whoever, is not going to win the election, but it would be interesting if he hypothetically did win but didn't have a vice-presidential nominee on enough state ballots.

If Sarah the "barracuda" is so tough, I guess maybe Joe Biden can go ahead and unleash his considerable debating skills withou worrying too much about not being a gentleman about it, though I would expect him, after watching him for many year, to be a gentleman. The question may turn out to be how civil she is and whether she uses her gender to accuse others of beating up on her. I don't believe Hillary ever really played the "poor little me" card. I would expect Sarah to be at least as willing to take punches as Hillary without McCain or anyone else calling foul. We barely know this person and what I've heard doesn't impress me. We need to know much more. We've had 19 months to get to know Barack,25 year or so for both Biden and McCain (though there are certain facts about his biography that are more often than not glossed over, and I' not talking about the hell he endured in N. Vietnam). Excuse me, but shouldn't a 17 year old girl and her boyfriend know how to avoid unwanted pregnancy (I'm assuming it was unplanned)? Did Mom bother to tell her the facts of life? I feel for those kids being thrown into the spotlight under these circumstances, and that, among other things, make me wonder about the judgment of Sarah and Johnny Mac

I want her on the ticket. She is for now the life of the party. But wait till this convention is over. More and more questions will be asked of her. More scandals will be brought up. The press will spin her story into one big, major soup opera. And while the press centers around her and McCain's troubled campaign, Obama will continue to campaign hard in all the swing states.

All she does is energize the base which is going to vote republican no matter how you spin it. But what she will also do is scare away the independent and undecided voters. She will also energize a women's rights movement against everything she stands for. Democrats want her on the ticket. I want her on there as well. The republicans don't and I know McCain is probably 2nd guessing himself on what his done.

Very sensible - in light of the current maelstrom. Two obvious truths have surfaced with all this bluster; (1) McCain is incapable of leadership and judgment as our President (2) A public servant should be vetted by the public and they are both public servants.

McCain just can't say no to Karl Rove. Look what that brought us under Bush.

Is Sarah Palin simply a “placeholder”. Did McCain choose her to satisfy the Pro-lifers, gun-totin’ women and wingnut conservatives. Her daughter’s pregnancy is not worth talking about – it’s private – but it sure keeps people all fired up and NOT focused on Same Old Republican ideas or Palin’s lack of experience, so that’s working out pretty well. If miraculously elected, will she quickly resign and allow McCain to select the Vice President he actually wants (see 25th Amendment). Perhaps his actual choice nominee would not WIN the election if on the ticket NOW. If McCain/Palin win, hopefully, McCain doesn't croak or become disabled while Palin is still VP.

Why do you keep pushing this story about Palin withdrawing? She is not going to withdraw.

What's up??? Look at her good reception from the public. (I am not a GOP fan - just a realist.)

Say what you will about Obama's experience. His choice of VP shows that he's thoughtful and takes the office of the president seriously. Palin shows that, to McCain and the Republicans, this is all a game and a show and that responsible leadership isn't even a blip on their radar screen.

Bet $12 to earn $100? Take the bet! I believe the odds are more like 50-50. It's a good bet that more negative info will come out on the unvetted Palin, If the Repubs force her to withdraw, they can self-righteously blame the Dems and media. If they wait, they are taking a high-stakes risk. Take the bet.

No way they're getting rid of Palin. What happens to all their talk of principle if they back down to the "media," or, worse yet, the Dems?

that is an assinine comment, showing that you must have had a fundamentalist education regarding sex. Palin being female has nothing to withdraw. That would have been Levi who didn't. I'm glad I got sex ed in public school. At least I got the right info on who had which parts...LOL

I do not believe Gov Palin will go away. She is just too tough, smart, and ruthless.

Do not underestimate Sarah-Barracuda.
She rises to the occasion.

She really DID sitting Governor Murkowski, and she DID beat Big Oil, partly because they thought she would be easy.
She is NOT. THEY LOST.

Watch her tonight. She WILL hit it out of the park.
And not just for conservatives.

Gov Murkowski was highly unpopular in Alaska, and people felt relieved that he could be replaced with a fellow republican.

Do not underestimate Sarah-Barracuda.- That's seems to be the problem in the republican party- you guys have under-estimated her (and her dozens of scandals)

" Sarah- Barracuda" ain't worth a pot to piss in up against Joe "35- years experience" Joe Biden.

Your paragraph is self-assurance- but that does not win elections, my dear.

The only thing Joe Biden has 35 years of experiance with is making bonehead comments. Palin will destroy him in the debates. How could you pair up one of the most electrifying candidates we have ever seen with the Pol we are sick of seeing? Crow all you want Dems. It is Obama who made the poor choice. And it's going to cost you.

Yea, like the good old boys are really scared. Who is she going to be mavericking over? I see a future of a lot of eating crows for Palin.

There are no moose or grizzly bears on Capital Hill. But there are a lot of coporate lobbyists available. Are coporate lobyists good old boys? Or are they just paymasters to the good old boys network.
