ST. PAUL, Minn. — Greeted by thunderous applause, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin presented herself to the Republican National Convention on Wednesday, and millions of Americans watching from home, as a small-town outsider ready to join John McCain's ticket in waging "a tough fight in this election against confident opponents at a crucial hour for our country."

"I will be honored to accept the nomination for vice president of the United States," she said in the convention's most anticipated speech. The 44-year-old, self-described "hockey mom" still awaits formal nomination for the second spot on the ticket.

With those words, the crowd roared _ and the flashes of thousands of cameras reflected off her glasses.

It was the crowning moment of a roller-coaster week in which the first woman ever on a Republican presidential ticket has faced questions about how closely the McCain campaign scrutinized her. She also has heard a wide range of inquiries about family issues, her policy positions and her record of public service.

Palin took crowd-delighting swipes at Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama and what she called the "Washington elite."

"The American presidency is not supposed to be a journey of 'personal discovery.' This world of threats and dangers is not just a community, and it doesn't just need an organizer," Palin said, a clear reference to Obama's time as a community organizer in Chicago.

And to the media that had closely examined her record, she said: "Here's a little news flash for all those reporters and commentators: I'm not going to Washington to seek their good opinion. I'm going to Washington to serve the people of this country."

As she concluded her speech, her family and then McCain greeted her on stage. "Don't you think we made the right choice for the next vice president. What a beautiful family," McCain said to loud cheers.

The Obama campaign had less than a warm greeting, saying Palin's speech was "written by George Bush's speechwriter and sounds exactly like the same divisive, partisan attacks we've heard from George Bush for the last eight years." The speech was written by Matthew Scully, who met Palin for the first time last week.

Selected by McCain only last Friday, Palin addressed the convention amid questions about her qualifications and relative lack of experience.

The first-term governor had top billing at the convention on a night delegates also lined up for a noisy roll call of the states to deliver their presidential nomination to McCain.

Watching her speech were her husband Todd and their children, including 17-year-old Bristol Palin, whom the Palins disclosed earlier in the week was five months pregnant. Bristol Palin's 18-year-old boyfriend and apparent fiance, Levi Johnston, was seated with them.

McCain shook up the presidential race by picking Palin, a little-known governor less than two years in office. Since then, a bright spotlight has been trained on the life and record of the Republican governor who has bucked the state's political establishment.

Days after Palin made her debut on the national stage with McCain, the campaign announced her unmarried daughter's pregnancy. Other disclosures followed, including that a private attorney is authorized to spend $95,000 of state money to defend her against accusations of abuse of power and that Palin sought pork-barrel projects for her city and state, contrary to her reformist image.

"Our family has the same ups and downs as any other ... the same challenges and the same joys," she said.

Noting that the couple's oldest son, Track, 19, was shipping out to Iraq in eight days with the Army infantry, Palin praised McCain as "a true profile in courage, and people like that are hard to come by."

"He's a man who wore the uniform of this country for 22 years, and refused to break faith with those troops in Iraq who have now brought victory within sight. And as the mother of one of those troops, that is exactly the kind of man I want as commander in chief," she said.

Largely unknown outside her home state, Palin told the convention: "I had the privilege of living most of my life in a small town. I was just your average hockey mom, and signed up for the PTA because I wanted to make my kids' public education better," she said, speaking of her home town of Wasilla, Alaska, with a population of about 6,500.

"When I ran for city council, I didn't need focus groups and voter profiles because I knew those voters, and knew their families, too," she said.

Before becoming governor, Palin served as mayor of Wasilla, she recounted, adding: "And since our opponents in this presidential election seem to look down on that experience, let me explain to them what the job involves. I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a 'community organizer,' except that you have actual responsibilities."

In another barb directed at the Illinois Democrat, Palin said: "Here's how I look at the choice Americans face in this election. In politics, there are some candidates who use change to promote their careers. And then there are those, like John McCain, who use their careers to promote change."

A former TV sportscaster, Palin delivered her speech in a firm, cheerful voice. It was her first chance to introduce and define herself to the American public and to explain to fellow Republicans how her experiences as Alaska governor would help galvanize the GOP ticket.

She strongly endorsed more oil exploration and drilling. "Our opponents say, again and again, that drilling will not solve all of America's energy problems _ as if we all didn't know that already. But the fact that drilling won't solve every problem is no excuse to do nothing at all," she said.

Palin has been an aggressive advocate for drilling in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, while McCain opposes drilling there. That difference was not touched on in the speech.

As soon as republicans are put under a microscope about Palin they blow it because of the little knowledge about her record. You can only pretend to know a stranger for so long, then here comes the surprise. Look at the Campbell Brown / Tucker Bounds interview. He did a poor job in answering questions about Palin heading the national guard in Alaska. When the questioning got tough he crumbled and McCain canceled his interview with Larry King on CNN. Sounds like a big baby to me. If you can't stand the heat (well you know the rest). This is the result of poor vetting and a sample of a McCain lead administration.

Actually, the MSM viewers have a little input in this threat. They can't FORCE us to watch them when they decide they NEED the media. I will be watching what Palin and McCain don't want me to watch. Their mockery and bashing will be avoided as much as possible.

I won't be watching, but I am wondering if Gibson will question her about, the ex. brother-in-law, the firings, her pastor, the mocking of community organizers, abstinence, abortion in case of rape or incest and etc. Or will he ask her when life begins, her greatest moral failure, how she defines "RICH" and how to rid evil in the world. PALIN/McCAIN=BUSH.

The link above is a video of an Alaska Independence Party meeting. 6 minutes in Palin is mentioned as a former member. They want to blame the media to shift attention from her questionable background.

Hope the MSM looks at this but doubt it.
Pass along though.

Still, Palin shouldn't be a distraction from what's at stake in this election - everything.
Spread the word. Let's be informed and choose wisely.

ABOUT SARAH PALIN:

http://webpages.charter.net/suasponte/

If you really want to know Sarah Palin's history (in detail) this is a "must read". It was written by Anne Kilkenny, a resident of Wasilla, Alaska.

Can someone explain to me why the media and Democratic Party attacking Palin on issues is considered sexest. The Republican Party is trying to protect her but all they are doing is delivering a message that she is a woman so take it easy on her. It is ridiculous because if she does become VP, she also can become President and are terrorist, Iran, and other volatile nations going to play with kiddie gloves. This is not Wasilla anymore this is the world.

The republinuts are hoping you'll confuse their talking points with reality. It's not sexist, but they like simple easily repeated sound-bites as propaganda.

Sure, I'll try to explain.

Because usually with male candidates we don't comment on their legs, hairdoo, lipstick and figure.
Because when a man runs for office no one asks if that will make him a bad parent.
Because we don't usually refer to a male governor of a state as a stewardess.

Stuff like that.

A someone who is probably part of the so-called "cultural elite", I suppose I'm among "the enemy" and an anathema to the conservatives, LOL
Oh well, guess Sarah and I won't be swapping cookie recipes nor makeup tips anytime in the near future. :)
Guess I'm stuck with my NY Times, classical music, and reading Beaudelaire en francais. :)

Pity....I know I'll be losing sleep over it ,hehehehehe.

Why is the media obeying Palin/McCain's orders?
Palin said that Hillary Clinton should not complain about being criticized by the "big boys"... Yet, few moths later Miss Congeniality cries because the media talks too much about her...
I guess that's why the mainstream media overpraised her speech like crazy...her threat worked!!! As for her mediocre speech, she simply read a text written by someone else (Obama writes his own speeches). The speech lacked in substance and she spent days reading it, rehearsing and in the end, she managed to repeat it publicly..so what? What is extraordinary about that? That makes people who praised her either stupid or hypocritical!

McCain's choice of Sarah Palin demonstrates how poor his judgment is. Maybe he experiencing 72-year old priapism and his choice has NOTHING to do with her "political/executive" experience.

And is the "change we can believe in" supposed to be Joe Biden? He stands for everything Obama has said he is against....he voted for Iraq, he has lobbyist ties, he is a huge washington insider who has been there for how many years?

Don't hold your breath. We're still waiting for them to investigate the Rezco connection, the Indonesian School records and why he sat in Wright's church for 20 years?

The media couldn't get enough of Obama's pastor. They plastered his picture in front of our eyes for weeks. Weren't you happy when they finally crucified Rev. Jeremiah Wright? What a disgrace... They have even searched Obama's kindergarten records, hoping to find a shred of evidence to validate their LIES. Why don't you help them out? BTW: Obama is pro-Christ.

If you're a man and you decide to run for office despite
your wife's recurrence of cancer you're a "questionable spouse." If
you're a woman and you decide to run for office despite having five kids
including a newborn... Well, we don't know what that is 'cause THAT'S
NOT A FAIR QUESTION TO ASK.

If you're a minority and you're selected for a job over more qualified
candidates you're a "token hire." If you're a conservative and you're
selected for a job over more qualified candidates you're a "game
changer."

If you live in an Urban area and you get a girl pregnant you're a "baby
daddy." If you're the same in Alaska you're a "teen father."

Black teen pregnancies? A "crisis" in black America. White teen
pregnancies? A "blessed event."

Grow up in Hawaii you're "exotic." Grow up in Alaska eating
mooseburgers, you're the quintessential "American story."

If you name your kid Barack you're "unpatriotic." Name your
kid Track, you're "colorful."

If you're a Democrat and you make a VP pick without fully vetting the
individual you're "reckless." A Republican who doesn't fully vet is a
"maverick."

If you say that for the "first time in my adult lifetime I'm really
proud of my country" it makes you "unfit" to be First Lady. If you are a
registered member of a fringe political group that advocates secession
that makes you "First Dude."

A DUI from twenty years ago is "old news." A speech given without proper
citation from twenty years ago is "relevant information."

McCain chose a nobody who happens to be a woman... media tried to find out who she is, that is sexism? Palin announced her teenage daughter is pregnant... media reported it, liberal elite media agenda? I thought liberals are the ones who are supposed to cry victims. Don't be fooled... The GOP got nada that is why they blamed the media.

Granted, she HAS done some noteworthy, good things... but

"This world of threats and dangers is not just a community, and it doesn't just need an organizer,"

She's wrong. The last thing we need is anarchy. The last thing we need is terrorism. Organization is what helps keep the good people safe and terrorists at bay.

She is wrong in her statement. Unless I'm missing some form of context.

Or am I living in the past complete with failed policies. Like in, oh, 2002?

Attacking the press is a standard mantra for the Republican Party. While there may be some who do treat others unfairly, that exists on both sides of the political aisle. However, the Republicans are not at all being treated unfairly, Quite the opposite is true. The real reason they resort to using this charge is that they do not want to be investigated, be asked and forced to answer questions. Perhaps this year the cry of 'media bias' will rise to the level of a shrill banshee wail as they really have no record to run on. They are the ones responsible for the current administration and its miserable record in all areas, as they are the ones who not only put, but returned them to office. They are really running away from their own record, and a pretty dismal one at that. Why would anyone consider returning this same group, Republicans, to power, boggles the rational mind. Bush and his administration have a miserable record, yes. But who were their enablers? It was none other than his party and his supporters.

Mika Brzezinski used to be a mild corrective to Joe Scarborough's ranting lunacy, but apparently not any more. Since her makeover, she seems to have decided to assume the role of Dumb Blond in the Boys' Club - Judy Holliday to Scarborough's Broderick Crawford (with no William Holden in sight). She constantly mugs, gapes and grins, gazes vacantly into the camera, and flatters whoever is talking, whether it be the bloviating Mike Barnicle or the whinnying Tucker Carlson. She simpers at everyone, regardless of who they are or what they're saying.

Today on Good Morning Joe her sole contribution to the discussion about Sarah Palin's convention speech was the observation that Palin is the mother of five children, and must therefore be "an inspiration to women." She repeated this at least a dozen times, and never explained why a mother with a large family should be so uniquely qualified to be vice-president. Perhaps there is a case to be made - if there is, Brzezinski never bothered to make it.

Clearly Brzezinski is not the idi ot that she plays on TV. But with her fake tan, blond streaks, and peekaboo blouses, the role of idi ot seems to fit her like a glove.
