I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Noonan Murphy

Update: Peggy Noonan addressed the open mic incident in the Wall Street Journal, and claimed that the "It's over" remark was not in reference to the McCain campaign but rather to the days when the Republican party could assume its base represented the mainstream American opinion:

When the segment was over and MSNBC was in commercial, Todd, Murphy and I continued our conversation, talking about the Palin choice overall. We were speaking informally, with some passion -- and into live mics. An audio tape of that conversation was sent, how or by whom I don't know, onto the internet. And within three hours I was receiving it from friends far and wide, asking me why I thought the McCain campaign is "over", as it says in the transcript of the conversation. Here I must plead some confusion. In our off-air conversation, I got on the subject of the leaders of the Republican party assuming, now, that whatever the base of the Republican party thinks is what America thinks. I made the case that this is no longer true, that party leaders seem to me stuck in the assumptions of 1988 and 1994, the assumptions that reigned when they were young and coming up. "The first lesson they learned is the one they remember," I said to Todd -- and I'm pretty certain that is a direct quote. But, I argued, that's over, those assumptions are yesterday, the party can no longer assume that its base is utterly in line with the thinking of the American people. And when I said, "It's over!" -- and I said it more than once -- that is what I was referring to. I am pretty certain that is exactly what Todd and Murphy understood I was referring to. In the truncated version of the conversation, on the Web, it appears I am saying the McCain campaign is over. I did not say it, and do not think it. In fact, at an on-the-record press symposium on the campaign on Monday, when all of those on the panel were pressed to predict who would win, I said that I didn't know, but that we just might find "This IS a country for old men." That is, McCain may well win. I do not think the campaign is over, I do not think this is settled, and did not suggest, back to the Todd-Murphy conversation, that "It's over."

Original Post: Wall Street Journal columnist and former Reagan speechwriter Peggy Noonan and former John McCain adviser, Time columnist, and MSNBC contributor Mike Murphy were caught on tape disparaging John McCain's selection of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his Vice Presidential running mate.

"It's over," Noonan said.

When Chuck Todd asked her if this was the most qualified woman the Republicans could nominate, Noonan responded, "The most qualified? No. I think they went for this, excuse me, political bullshit about narratives. Every time the Republicans do that, because that's not where they live and that's not what they're good at, they blow it."

Murphy characterized the choices as "cynical" and "gimmicky."

Watch (the dialogue in question starts 38 seconds in, full transcript is below the video):

Chuck Todd: Mike Murphy, lots of free advice, we'll see if Steve Schmidt and the boys were watching. We'll find out on your blackberry. Tonight voters will get their chance to hear from Sarah Palin and she will get the chance to show voters she's the right woman for the job Up next, one man who's already convinced and he'll us why Gov. Jon Huntsman. (cut away)

Peggy Noonan: Yeah.

Mike Murphy: You know, because I come out of the blue swing state governor world: Engler, Whitman, Tommy Thompson, Mitt Romney, Jeb Bush. I mean, these guys -- this is how you win a Texas race, just run it up. And it's not gonna work. And --

PN: It's over.

MM: Still McCain can give a version of the Lieberman speech to do himself some good.

CT: I also think the Palin pick is insulting to Kay Bailey Hutchinson, too.

PN: Saw Kay this morning.

CT: Yeah, she's never looked comfortable about this --

MM: They're all bummed out.

CT: Yeah, I mean is she really the most qualified woman they could have turned to?

PN: The most qualified? No! I think they went for this -- excuse me-- political bullshit about narratives --

CT: Yeah they went to a narrative.

MM: I totally agree.

PN: Every time the Republicans do that, because that's not where they live and it's not what they're good at, they blow it.

MM: You know what's really the worst thing about it? The greatness of McCain is no cynicism, and this is cynical.

CT: This is cynical, and as you called it, gimmicky.

MM: Yeah.

Last night McCain stated that the reason the campaign ads have gone negative is because Obama has refused to join McCain in making joint appearances with him in his suggested town meetings.

It’s time to call him out. The logistics may require some effort but the results will be stunning.

Invite McCain to join Obama at 5 of your next campaign stops and agree to meet him at 5 of his next stops.

Invite Palin to join Biden at 5 of his next campaign stops and agree to meet her at 5 of her next stops.

Announce that the Press will also be invited and given access to interview all parties at each stop.

Obama claims to be a “pretty good street basketball player” and having played on the courts in New York I know that it made me ready for most any kind of challenge. We know that Joe can handle himself in a verbal joust and Palin claims to be a hockey mom.

They have asked for a down and out brawl. Call them out on their challenge and give the American public a chance to see what this election is really all about.

Let’s “get-er-done” once and for all.

This is THE IDEA OF THE CENTURY.

M c C a i n DARE NOT CONSIDER IT--thus completely defeating his line of attack. And the public will clamor for it, putting pressure on him and her. PERFECT.

BRILLIANT--circulate THIS IDEA WIDELY.

Not a surprise. Of course they don't think she's experienced enough. Does anyone really believe they do? Now that would be news!

Is this true? I just read on the Wonkette blog the following:

http://www.laprogressive.com/2008/09/05/alaskans-speak-in-a-frightened-whisper-palin-is-%E2%80%9Cracist-sexist-vindictive-and-mean%E2%80%9D/

If this turns out to be legit, this could be explosive. Where is the press on this one?????

I would like to know if anyone else has heard of any comments she has made - racist -

I miss Tim Russert. He loved this country too much to have it destroyed over a gimmick! Do the MSM love their country or is it all about ratings and money? How do they sleep at night?

"Do the MSM love their country or is it all about ratings and money?"

Duh.

"How do they sleep at night?"

On buckets of cash or at least the desire to not be homeless on a journalistic degree's salary, I guess.

Noonan is a joke and so is most of the media. It's about time a mother stepped in to take care of business in Washington. Palin, you go girl! Noonan, hit the bricks!

I was sooooo happy to read the transcript of their conversation! For days now I've been wondering, "Do ALL republicans REALLY think Palin's a great pick?" When half of the country and most of the world is questioning McCain's decision, how does the GOP manage to convince so many of its members that it was, not only a good choice, but perhaps the greatest choice?? It's good to know that there are some conservatives out there who recognize the absurdity of putting Sarah Palin in the executive on-deck circle. If Obama chose as his running mate a candidate comparable to Palin, democrats would have been outraged. This transcript shows that some republicans do think for themselves instead of "listening to their gut" I thought that was just something you hear on the Colbert Report.

One of the great gifts of the Repubs is their ability to fall in line, straight and true. How else could they tolerate the 'governance' of the current administration? They recognize that the only way to retain power is unity. The disinformation simply goes without saying. With them, it truly is party first, America not first. Very occasionally you have a Bob Barr step forward and refute that principle, but that is the rare exception.
Also, you have to remember that McCain has sold his ever lovin' soul to the Bushie wing of the conservative party. This dude REALLY wants to be president, even if others dictate his policy for him. That being so, it really wouldn't matter if he chose Spongebob to be VP, as long as Spongebob read the lines the way they were written for him. And, I guarantee it, all of a sudden Candidate Squarepants would be the greatest American, Statesmen and Leader the party had ever seen.

I read the article about Peggy Noonan and Mike Murphy...I really believe that Peggy Noonan meant exactly what she said and I must say she thinks she sits on top of a mountain judging everyone with a what I am sure she believes is an eye of perfection. I hope she experiences the proper admonishment from her peers because it seems to me that this has been kept very hush hush on the media circuit.

See what happens when you think you are bigger than life miss ego, how does it feel now?

I always knew she was a phoney. I've watched her on talk shows and she always acts like she is this perfect lady above the fray. This whole episode is very, very, funny. You spend your whole career trying to be someone you are not and eventually the world finds out.

The MSM is sad. When McSame passed Obama for the first time in the USA Today/Gallup Poll they were pushing that poll like crazy. Now Obama leads by 7 to 8 points in the Gallup Poll--he even reached the 50% mark and it only received average exposure. Now the CBS Poll has the candidates tied at 42% and the Gallup Poll barely gets mentioned--Obama leads by 4 points after the GOP Convention. MSNBC lets Joe Scarborough (sometimes he is ok) wreck havoc and Keith gets the blues. On CNN, Wolf-ie makes up stuff and explains away McSame's problems but some how Campbell Brown gets in trouble because she ask Tucker Bounds (McSame spokeman) a few simple questions about Palin. Thus McSame cancels his interview with Larry King.

People PLEASE register to vote before October 3rd. If possible request an absentee ballot and vote EARLY. I am not taking any chances with the republican this year; they like to disenfranchise voters, especially minorities.

So, if you don't have to deal with them on November 4th do NOT!

In Maryland you can request an absentee ballot. The deadline is October 28. PLEASE, vote and vote early!

Obama is waging a battle against a moneyed system, network and culture that does not want change. Chaos, division, and the illusion that everything is ok is what they want to maintain. Not to sound crazy or anything, but this is sort of like two movies rolled into one--"the Matrix" trilogy and "Idiocracy" the Mike Judge movie. Take a weekend and watch all 4 movies. I am like Biden at this point when he says, "Come on...give me a break.". A beauty queen from Wilisa,AK who attended 6 different colleges before she could graduate with a journalism degree. Then was sport newcaster, 5 kids and eats moose burgers and who's husband has at least 1 DUI. And I not even going to get on Cindy McCain. Just like some of the comments about moving to Canada if Obama gets elected, I might move to South American if McCain/Palin get elected. However, I will stay away from Venezuela. They will most likely bomb that place.

The whole Republican convention went by without offering a single idea about how to improve the lives of ordinary Americans. ~~~~~~~~

McCain and the Republicans had all week to make their case -- and they didn't do it. ~~~~~~~~~~

Senator Obama clearly speaks out about exactly what we didn't hear at the Republican convention. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~

McCain believes that the fundamentals of our economy are "strong."
The media has reported this week that unemployment jumped to its highest rate in five years, and our economy lost 605,000 jobs this year alone. ~~~~~~~~~~~~

All of you should know; the economy is a bust ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Most Americans cannot afford gas ~~~~~

Americans Jobs going, going, gone ~~~~~~~

American Veterans Benefits has been cut, etc ~~~~~

McCain wants to continue the war ~~~~~~~~~

We have a war is going on ~~~~~~~~~

President Bush misused our tax dollars in Iraq ~~~~~~~~~~

John McCain lies, he does not want change! ~~~~ McCain voted with George W. Bush more than 90 percent of the time, and he thinks Americans are falling for his lies. ~~~~~~~~~~~~

Americans are making the right choice and will in November vote for Obama-Biden Ticket. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

This is not 2000 or 2004! ~~ Republicans like Palin, Giuliani, and Romney can engage in red-meat partisan vitriol all they want, right out of the Karl Rove playbook. ~~~~~~~~~~~~

Americans now have seen the full impact of GOP policies on their pocketbook. ~~~~~~~~~~~

Obama for President and Obama for Vice President!

Yeah, no problem playing back what Jesse Jackson said on a hot mic, but lets just see if fox, cnn, or msnbc will replay this on air gaffe.

If they don't, I think it's more than fair to cry foul.

I'm shocked, frankly, by the outrage over this. On the one hand, we cry that the media is supposed to be balanced. On the other, when we find out what they say "off-air" is different than what they say "on-air," we cry that they're liars.

These are people who have personal opinions about what's going on. Those personal opinions are not required to be balanced and non-partisan. What they say on-air IS supposed to be balanced and non-partisan - in short, "professional."

If they DIDN'T have personal opinions, if they DIDN'T have personal passions about this stuff, then they truly would just be talking heads.

Get over yourselves. It's YOUR responsibility as an audience to view and read critically and understand the difference between public, professional political commentary and off-air personal chatter.

You make no sense! It was the balanced and non-partisan stuff they said off-air. It's the unbalanced, partisan bullshit pug talking points that all of these talking heads have been saying on air. They are all reading from the same script.

Get over YOUR self, troll.

The media forced Jesse Jacksons on air gaffe down our throats for weeks, and Jesse had to go public, endure the ridicule, and apologize over and over. He was even dressed down and dismissed by his own son. Jacksons crime was to criticize the man he was voting for but Jackson wasn't a spokesperson for the campain. At least one of the people in question in this fiasco is a paid moutpiece for the campaign. Do you really expect us to pretend that these 'professional pundits' are exempt from the same level of scrutiny as Jesse Jackson had to endure?

As I recall it was those on the far left who kept requiring an apology. The media gave you exactly what you wanted to hear as did this place.
10:34 AM on 09/06/2008
Like LIsaO4 I can't read everything here, but like her I'm disgusted at what we find out is discussed when the mics are "off". Chuck Todd had always come across to me as a pretty straight forward moderator. This revelation is disturbing. I have increasingly decided it's not worth watching these shows. It's all posturing, mouthing talking points, saying what's necessary to further one's career as a talking head, etc. Either make your guests speak truth to power or don't have them on your show. Pathetic for everyone involved.

I am so tired of our media manipulating the truth. Funny how Murphy and Noonan are nowhere to be found now. How come the media keeps mentioning that Palin has energized the Republican base, but seem to leave out that because of her, the Democratic base will be even more energized - they want a close election for ratings - truly sad after 8 yrs. of destruction by the Republicans. The biggest joke of all is that McCain is a Republican and acts like he hasn't had anything to do in the past 26 yrs. If Palin is go great, why can't she face a few questions from the media? PEOPLE WAKE UP!!!!
09:05 AM on 09/06/2008
YOU're right LisaO4...and Peggy Noonan is a political genious and she knows bull when she sees it. Personally, I am hoping that this place I live in called America is comnprised more of people who can see and cut through the bull---Sara Palin is Dick Cheney in drag. She is a pigheaded, my way or the highway woman that has elevated her status soley based on her contestant good looks. If Sara Palin was a patriot she would have had the decency to demand Mccain choose someone other than her....and all this talk of sexist treatment by a woman who brings "lipstick" and a pin that says " coldest state, hottest governor" into her political mileau? She is a hypocrite extraordinairre flaunting gender.
