ST. PAUL, Minn. — Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and her Republican supporters held back little Wednesday as they issued dismissive attacks on Barack Obama and flattering praise on her credentials to be vice president. In some cases, the reproach and the praise stretched the truth.

Some examples:

PALIN: "I have protected the taxpayers by vetoing wasteful spending ... and championed reform to end the abuses of earmark spending by Congress. I told the Congress 'thanks but no thanks' for that Bridge to Nowhere."

THE FACTS: As mayor of Wasilla, Palin hired a lobbyist and traveled to Washington annually to support earmarks for the town totaling $27 million. In her two years as governor, Alaska has requested nearly $750 million in special federal spending, by far the largest per-capita request in the nation. While Palin notes she rejected plans to build a $398 million bridge from Ketchikan to an island with 50 residents and an airport, that opposition came only after the plan was ridiculed nationally as a "bridge to nowhere."

PALIN: "There is much to like and admire about our opponent. But listening to him speak, it's easy to forget that this is a man who has authored two memoirs but not a single major law or reform _ not even in the state senate."

THE FACTS: Compared to McCain and his two decades in the Senate, Obama does have a more meager record. But he has worked with Republicans to pass legislation that expanded efforts to intercept illegal shipments of weapons of mass destruction and to help destroy conventional weapons stockpiles. The legislation became law last year. To demean that accomplishment would be to also demean the work of Republican Sen. Richard Lugar of Indiana, a respected foreign policy voice in the Senate. In Illinois, he was the leader on two big, contentious measures in Illinois: studying racial profiling by police and requiring recordings of interrogations in potential death penalty cases. He also successfully co-sponsored major ethics reform legislation.

PALIN: "The Democratic nominee for president supports plans to raise income taxes, raise payroll taxes, raise investment income taxes, raise the death tax, raise business taxes, and increase the tax burden on the American people by hundreds of billions of dollars."

THE FACTS: The Tax Policy Center, a think tank run jointly by the Brookings Institution and the Urban Institute, concluded that Obama's plan would increase after-tax income for middle-income taxpayers by about 5 percent by 2012, or nearly $2,200 annually. McCain's plan, which cuts taxes across all income levels, would raise after tax-income for middle-income taxpayers by 3 percent, the center concluded.

Obama would provide $80 billion in tax breaks, mainly for poor workers and the elderly, including tripling the Earned Income Tax Credit for minimum-wage workers and higher credits for larger families.

He also would raise income taxes, capital gains and dividend taxes on the wealthiest. He would raise payroll taxes on taxpayers with incomes above $250,000, and he would raise corporate taxes. Small businesses that make more than $250,000 a year would see taxes rise.

MCCAIN: "She's been governor of our largest state, in charge of 20 percent of America's energy supply ... She's responsible for 20 percent of the nation's energy supply. I'm entertained by the comparison and I hope we can keep making that comparison that running a political campaign is somehow comparable to being the executive of the largest state in America," he said in an interview with ABC News' Charles Gibson.

THE FACTS: McCain's phrasing exaggerates both claims. Palin is governor of a state that ranks second nationally in crude oil production, but she's no more "responsible" for that resource than President Bush was when he was governor of Texas, another oil-producing state. In fact, her primary power is the ability to tax oil, which she did in concert with the Alaska Legislature. And where Alaska is the largest state in America, McCain could as easily have called it the 47th largest state _ by population.

MCCAIN: "She's the commander of the Alaska National Guard. ... She has been in charge, and she has had national security as one of her primary responsibilities," he said on ABC.

THE FACTS: While governors are in charge of their state guard units, that authority ends whenever those units are called to actual military service. When guard units are deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan, for example, they assume those duties under "federal status," which means they report to the Defense Department, not their governors. Alaska's national guard units have a total of about 4,200 personnel, among the smallest of state guard organizations.

FORMER ARKANSAS GOV. MIKE HUCKABEE: Palin "got more votes running for mayor of Wasilla, Alaska than Joe Biden got running for president of the United States."

THE FACTS: A whopper. Palin got 616 votes in the 1996 mayor's election, and got 909 in her 1999 re-election race, for a total of 1,525. Biden dropped out of the race after the Iowa caucuses, but he still got 76,165 votes in 23 states and the District of Columbia where he was on the ballot during the 2008 presidential primaries.

FORMER MASSACHUSETTS GOV. MITT ROMNEY: "We need change, all right _ change from a liberal Washington to a conservative Washington! We have a prescription for every American who wants change in Washington _ throw out the big-government liberals, and elect John McCain and Sarah Palin."

THE FACTS: A Back-to-the-Future moment. George W. Bush, a conservative Republican, has been president for nearly eight years. And until last year, Republicans controlled Congress. Only since January 2007 have Democrats have been in charge of the House and Senate.

I thought HuffPo was supposed to be this great site. There are hundreds of comments pending so no one can see what's being said. this happens often. And comments are rejected for reasons no one seems to know. I don't use foul language or anything and I have been insulted repeatedly, yet my comments are rejected. I can only assume they are too right wing for the HuffPo moderator.

Having the same problem...

I too have that same problem, not getting posts posted, not being insulted. I am probably as far left as you are disoriented.

Change your name and you will not be insulted so often, perhaps anittruthfan.

One of the things that is so galling is that this lady has been in the race for 5 minutes and she comes in reading a condescending pack of lies, that is not only disrespectful, but not worthy of the president or vice president of this great nation. It's time for the Amerian people to purge this kind of silliness from the public discourse, and bring some dignity back to Washington.

We haven't seen professionalism and serious governing in this capitol for 30 years. And yes, I'm including Tricky Dick. Even though he was dishonest and cunning, he was only 1 person. The government itself, legislative, judicial and executive were run with some respect and decorum. Now all 3 are in disarray, thanks to the conservative "revolution". What are these people so angry about? They've been able to squirrel away lots of money and build they're mini mansions in the last 8 years. Do they want more??? What??
These last 2 days of the RNC have been disgraceful. Guiliani, Thompson, Romney, and Huckabee showed why they are not worthy of the top job in this country & why they lost. And Sarah Palin showed last night why she's not worthy of the second to the top job in the country. By letting this kind of foolishness take place without calling a stop to it, McCain has shown himself not to be worthy of the top job either.

It is interesting to find out that McCain has NO executive experience. Does that make him less qualified than Palin. HMMM???

Hockey Mom, Palin, says the difference between a pitbull and a hockey mom is that a hockey mom wears lipstick.

The Repubs new strategy to the White House - nominate a pitbull with lipstick to be VP.

McCain's "Country First" theme should go down in flames. I am wondering why more is not made of the Palin Family association with the move by the Alaskan Indepence Party to have Alaska become independent of the USA.

I wish the AP and other good reporters would get on this.

This woman is as phoney as Bush and McCain's reasons that led this country to war/

Republicans lie? In front of a national audience? Now there's something tried and true. I thought this was not about partisan politics but bringing us together as one America. Palin's speech (although I know she didn't write it) was the most partisan speech I've ever heard. And nasty. With all the informationn coming out about her, her speechwriters should have been more careful. And she should have toned down the sarcasm.

Hey Obama supporters. Barack's campaign donations are currently spiking through the roof. Since the Rethug and Ms. Moose Eater's speeches last night, Obama campaign donations have spiked. He's raised $8 million from 130,000 donors, I am proud to be one of them and I am planning to give him some more later!

From Alaskan Blog site...l Ioved it so much, I had to share:
The Shrilla from Wasilla, the Tart from the Tundra, the Mom from Mooseland, the First Book-Banner from the Last Frontier.

Ultimately, I don't think she can pull off the attack dog stuff over the duration. As we saw last night, she lapses into dripping sarcasm and frankly just comes across as a catty bitch. The thrust out chin, the grating voice with a hint of crazy like some deranged version of Frances McDormand(sp?) in Fargo, it's just not going to work over the long haul.

So they'll hide or insulate her as much as possible. Tight leash, nothing unscripted (because it would conflict mightily with McCain's claimed positions and push to appeal to the middle).

I thought it was pretty telling when McCain came on stage to hug her after her speech and she was not smiling but still holding that thrust chin, clenched jaw, "bitch pose" during the hug. Just seemed off-key, like something isn't right that we don't get yet. Of course, since they barely know each other and she had to be experiencing a huge adrenaline dump...who knows, maybe just nerves.

I noticed that body language, no eye contact. McCain looked at Palin, Palin stared into the crowd with her clenched jaw. Clearly it doesn't look like Palin likes McCain.

McCain wanted to make Leiberman his VP. He was told that his delegates would not nominate Leiberman just ten days before the RNC was to start. He then chose Pailin. And after finding out she was for the Bridge to Nowhere before she was against it, the over 27 million dollars in earmarks, troopergate, not to mention all the personals issues. McCain may have been put off by all this and let her know.

He chose her for the right wing conservatives and to pander to women. Exploiting her and her story, she knows it and is more than willing to do it. But it doesn't mean she has to like him. He needs her more than she needs him. Pailin has brought excitement and enthusiasm to McCain's flat campaign. McCain should be careful because Pailin is smarter than he is, and they both know it.

Pailin aggressively went after Obama, almost egging him on, so the repugs can then play the sexism card along with the POW card. Obama has received an Ivy League education, he is Chicago street smart and is highly inteligent and calculating. Sarah Pailin is not smarter than Obama.

Thrust-out chin, clenched jaw? Sounds like a regular Moose-ilini.

I wear lipstick, shoot guns at the range, support the PTA and go to soccer practice. So what.
As a woman who is 44, a mother, a wife, a business person and an American, I understand exactly who THIS woman is. I've known lots of them. She wants you to think she's a regular gal. She wants you to think because she signed up for the PTA she'll take a bullet for you. Does she think we're stupid?
What a hypocrite. She preaches abstinence and won't fund sex education in school. But now that her views backfired, it's OK that HER teen is pregnant? Those two teenagers were TOLD to hold hands last night. Does that convince me that these two "children" are okay? No. It was manipulative. I feel sorry for them. They are forced together because pitbull mama made them "keep up appearances." I feel better already, don't you?
I'm also concerned that she did not seem to know the statistics on having a child after the age of 42. She had 4 healthy children. Does this make her a hero? Not to me. I think the Sled Champion should have had a little "snip". Bet the siblings will have to take care of their baby brother while mama is busy talking about abstinence. Sad.
McCain hung himself by choosing this "hockey mom" who's had too much exposure in the dark up there.

Im ALL REVED up now as a Democrat after hearing Palin's speech last night!! She has reminded me of the past 8 years of ideology and how scary it would be to have another "Right-wing" extremist in the Whitehouse! Im going to sign up as a volunteer for the Obama Campaign now FOR SURE, and more people should do the same to make sure this election doesnt slip away from us! We can't fall asleep at the wheel like we did the past 2 elections! Ive heard from many of my friends who are Democrats who feel more UNITED as ever after hearing some of the speeches this week. Some of my Independent friends online were frankly TURNED OFF by the speeches as well because we have to heal as a country and fix alot of the mess Bush is leaving behind and not resort to school yard bullying! That is NOT what the Country needs!!

Hey Hillary, where are you? Never thought I'd say it, but compared to "MOMZILLA" I guess you aren't so bad, afterall.

To REP- study the facts.
Know why you are voting REP.

Too often I see REP's not understanding the truth....higher taxes (you can state this if over 250K a year) for example...Leaving Iraq without "winning"....wait, 4 years ago republicans claimed they WON the war...and needed to maintain peace???

Study and then vote...
I found it ironic that Lieberman pointed out not to vote "the party"

REPS- try to do the same.
Can you say to yourself you've study both sides fully? If so, proceed with your vote.

But don't vote fear!
