Female Clinton Supporters In Focus Groups See Talent, Mudslinging In Palin's Speech

In two different focus groups of Clinton-supporting Nevada women -- married and unmarried -- conducted immediately after Gov. Sarah Palin's Wednesday night speech to the Republican National Convention, a few common reactions quickly took shape.

First, women in both groups were impressed with Palin's speaking ability and poise. But they were hardly convinced that she was qualified to be vice president, or that she truly represented the "change" they were looking for, especially in light of what was deemed an overly harsh "sarcasm" pervading her address.

The (mostly) anonymous proceedings were webcast live to reporters, who were told in a press release that the Nevada focus groups would include "some former Hillary Clinton supporters who are now undecided or are weak supporters of Barack Obama or John McCain." No party identification was made available, though the approximately two dozen women were reportedly between 30 and 60 years old.

In the "married" group, when one attendee kicked off the discussion by saying "she's a good speaker, and a crowd pleaser," the rest of the room articulated their agreement. "I didn't expect to be as impressed as I was," said another respondent. But then another woman added: "Once she started mudslinging, I thought, it's the same old crap as other politicians. McCain used her to get the women's vote. And she's using McCain."

"Thank you," another woman responded. "That really upset me; there was no need for that. It was snippy."

The unmarried group also voiced similar objections to the harsh, partisan edge of Palin's remarks. "I'm not impressed with her at all as a person," one said, citing her "finger pointing" and general sarcasm after the group had generally agreed that she was a talented public speaker.

Still not all focus group members thought Palin came off too harsh. "She didn't seem very aggressive to me at all," said one unmarried participant.

But in both groups, narrow majorities said they held a more negative view of Palin after her speech. "She comes off pretty cutthroat," said one.

On other issues, women in both groups said they wanted to hear more of Palin's own policy views, outside the realm of energy. Education, heath care, the economy and Iraq were all cited as areas in which women were hungry for more information -- especially in light of McCain's age. "I think America is concerned, because of McCain's age, that we're gonna have a female president who's maybe inexperienced. The nation needs to know what her issues are," said one married respondent, which prompted another to add: "I don't think she's got what it takes." An unmarried participant said she had yet to hear enough "in regards to her personal views, which could be implicated on us if McCain was to die."

When prompted to respond to Palin's steadfast opposition to abortion -- even in cases of rape or incest -- no woman in either group stepped forward to defend the Alaskan Republican. "I don't dig that," said one married woman, matter of factly.

But there were other points on which the participants expressed pride in Palin's achievement. "She earned what she's got -- as far as not marrying into it. I like that about her," said one married respondent. "Let's hope she has a good showing," said another who had expressed disappointment over Palin's abortion views.

The groups -- which were coordinated by Anna Greenberg and Stan Greenberg of Greenberg, Quinlan, Rosner Research -- were commissioned by the Women's Voices/Women Vote Action Fund, which describes itself as "dedicated to encouraging unmarried women to bring their voices to our nation's political conversation and to advocate for policies important to them."

If the GOP ticket actually convinces significant numbers of Hillary women, many perhaps hoping that God will break the glass ceiling by smiting McCain mid-term, it will only show the corruption of feminism among a certain type of right leaning liberal. If any woman would do, would you rather have Ann Coulter or Michael Moore, for example? The idea that the fate of the world for the next 4 years should be decided on the basis of anger at Obama for holding up the historic moment of the first woman President, any more than it should be decided by a desire to continue not to have a black President, is the opossite of politics. On the issues it should be crystal clear by now that the best candidate with a chance of winning just happens to be a black male. If the PUMAs inflict another 4 years of Bushism it will be hard for not just the Democrats but America and the world to forgive them. And if they think its OK to elect a creationist, gun-toting, abstinence-only, book-banning, hockey hawk currently facing an abuse of power investigation just because she's a woman they need to reexamine their feminism.

I think Sarah would be a great leader for a dictatorship. Instead of firing the people that "didnt support her" or intimidate her or rub her the wrong way, she would be able to incarcerate them. If you look at the facts, it is a pattern, not a lone occurrence. It tells you how she would be if she were to be free to do what she wants.

They are ashamed to say it, but the real feeling among most women is that Palin falls far short of what they want to see. Former Hillary supporters are up a tree and they know in their hearts that they have to vote for Obama. Obama knows this too! Very few women want to see a religionist sicko in office who thinks that you should be forced to have a rapists child. Just does not cut it in this day and age. One highly abusive religionist philosophy. Could you imagine if this broad became VP? What a mess.

Why call her a broad. part from being cheap, it's also wrong. Plainly, she's very, very narrow.....

John McCain's Vice President selection is "Pal(e)in" comparison to more qualified and experienced female politicians.

Let's all keep in mind she is running for VP, not P, so keep it in perspective.

She isn' t Hillary, and although I believe they chose her to peel off some of those votes, I believe women are smarter than that and won't be swayed by a sarcastic bully.

If Hillary does some campaigning for Obama, fine. I don't think it's her job to attack McCain's parrot, however. As soon as Mrs. Palin gets a little airtime that isn't perfectly scripted, she will take care of it herself.

This will have died down by next week.

I totally agree about the excitement dying down. Joe Scarborough reported that the excitement had already gone out of the crowd, and the hallways were empty outside the convention floor tonight before McCain's speech. The Republicans now have a problem that the Democrats avoided.

If Hillary had won and picked Obama as VP, a lot of people would have been excited by him, but not her. I think that that is what will happen with the Republicans. At the end of the day, conservatives are still being asked to vote for McCain, someone they don't really trust. When it becomes apparent how little Palin would actually influence a McCain administration, I think the general malaise among Republicans will set in once again.

Hillary should be attacking this woman as a woman! Few of us have the power to take her on, but Hill does, and that's why she should be making her presence felt.

As a woman, a former republican and currently a registered independent, I am insulted by McCains attempt to pick a cheap imitation of Hillary. Palins speech last night did not to unite the people of this country. It was hateful and full of cheap shots and I hope Obama's campaign does not stoop down to their level.

I'm not sure why we can't criticize the fact that her underage and unwed daughter is pregnant. Since it's "God's will" that we are in an unjust war...was it God's will for her daughter to have premarital sex...just wondering.

Her daughter rebelled, made a play for attention or, both. Mom lives by a strict religious code but divides her time between her own ambitions and 5 children. I'm glad I had an ordinary upbringing.

I see her daughter's pregnancy, not her daughter herself, as proof that abstinence only does not work. She is not fair game, but her pregnancy is because it shows that her mother's view simply does not work.

I am almost 41, only had two pregnancies in my life both of which produced my beautiful children after I was well into my happy marriage. My mother taught me well, and sex education at school worked in my case. There are millions of other women who will say what I say.

So when Republicans talk about millions of families who deal with this stuff, I can't tell you of a single one. It's all spin.

Her husband Todd, goes away to work for months at a time and she is running the state, she has little time to take care of her kids. Probably her older kids are taking care of the little ones, and being a teenager sometimes they just give in to peer pressure. Wonder what kind of time she will have for her family if she becomes VP and since she doesnt believe in prevention she is liable to become pregnant as a VP.

Where oh where are Hillary and Bill Clinton's voices on all of this? Are they dead? How is it possible that they have nothing to contribute to the national dialogue of what is happening with the S. Palin melodrama, much less all the underhanded dealings of McCain himself and all their cronies! I have suspected for some time now that they are working behind the scenes with the McCain bunch...doesn't it make you wonder? Both Clintons know people listen to them, might value their input. Perplexed....

ALSO I must ask at every opportunity: WHY are we not getting detailed coverage ANYWHERE (not cable or otherwise) about the totally unacceptable, deplorable ("police state"-like) treatment of protesters and others who have assembled to bring attention to their (our?) causes in St. Paul???? The self declared Right Wing is calling everyone and anyone not "in step" with them "leftists", "angry leftists", "anarchists" and the like, taking aim at the media big time ...and handling protestors like criminals, even arresting them without cause PRIOR to their having even stepped outside!!! Come on! Will we all be caught with our drawers down when these madmen declare Martial Law?

doctordoubt;

No, it doesn't beg; because she did just enough to appease the DNC in order to run again in 2012. She made herself look like the hero, when she brought on everything that happened to her. The Clintons arrogance got the best of them, they thought this nomination was owed to them and nothing could be further from the truth.

So, once again she probably thinking that the 2012 nomination is owed to her. She's wrong on that fact as well.

The Clintons know better than to get in the middle of this kerfuffle. Ms. Palin will self-destruct the moment she encounters a reporter without her handlers present.

Again, why are you expecting the Clintons to come out about Palin?

Obama made it clear that he didn't have any respect for Hillary or her supporters. He never even considered her for the VP spot, so why should she come out and help the O campaign now.

Obama needs to grow a pair and stand up to Palin. She can't be more horrilble than his wife.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:13 PM on 09/04/2008

Apparently, your pair is in your mouth, because you make no sense at all. Where was her respect for Obama? She started the whole thing with the darken picture conveniently, being released to the media, then the Wright tapes and her insinuation of his patriotism and so much more. Again, I ask you PUMA people; where was her respect for him, respect goes both ways. Obama bent over backwards to speak kind of someone that trashed him in the media non-stop. The media saw that, Clinton persona coming through and bad blood from times gone by, so they lashed back at her. Don't blame Obama for something the Clintons did to the media long before he came on the scene. Obama was the perfect gentleman the whole time towards her.

You know, I would question the judgement of a man with a teenage pregnant daughter. The candidate knew it would expose his/her child when the position was accepted. Family is family whether you are the mother or father.

What did she think was going to happen? Why is it we cannot question her because she is female? (I am female).

I want her grades, see how smart she was. we know where obama graduated at the top of his and Mccain graduated at the bottom of his, and she went to 6 college's for a 4 year degree! Something stinks of some one who is lousey at education, and intellegence.

With all dues respect, there is nothing wrong with a journalism degree assuming it comes from a serious institution. I have two degrees from Syracuse's Newhouse school (Journalism and Masters in TCM) and they were not that easy to come by (e.g. if you mispelled a word, used improper punctuation or grammer, you got an automatic "F" and this was before computers).

So you would have failed: lousey? I don't think so.

But I agree with your point.
