These topics are trivial in the long run. And Democrats would be hard pressed to make an issue out of this when they've been bemoaning the use of it against Barack Obama. But the McCain campaign made a small but significant tactical mistake tonight when they sent their candidate out to speak without adorning a flag pin.

The "he-doesn't-wear-a-flag-pin" charge works only in the context of a larger attack on that candidate's patriotism. And in this election, McCain will almost assuredly never be charged of not exhibiting a requisite amount of love for country (did someone say "country first"?). But those critics of Obama who have highlighted the absence of a pin on his lapel now have little to zero ammunition on this front.

Thanks for finally noticing. I've been screaming about him not wearing a flag pin for months. Remember how Chris Wallace had countdown to when Barack Obama would speak on Fox, well I challenge Wallace to do the same for McCain. When will McSame start wearing his flag pin.

We all 'know' that McSame spent 5-1/2 years as a prisoner of war, so he doesn't have to 'prove' his patriotism. Now that other guy .. the elitist, 'uppity' one who spent years as a 'gasp' community organizer in Chicago, now he is the one we need to question about his patriotism.

I had to try out my best double standard mode here....

Obama really should not have given in and wore a flag. I like his free spirit and don't want to see him morph into a Repulicon.

I actually talked with a blind man the other day about Obama and McCain. He said that he could never vote for Obama because he doesn't wear a flag pin. I told him that it is crazy to pick a President because they do or do not wear jewelry! I can't wait to tell him that McCain didn't wear one last night.

Here's your "War Hero".

"John McCain flew 23 bombing missions over North Vietnam in a campaign called Operation Rolling Thunder. During this bombing campaign, which lasted for almost 44 months, U.S. forces flew 307,000 attack sorties, dropping 643,000 tons of bombs on North Vietnam (roughly the same tonnage dropped in the Pacific during all of World War II). Though the stated targets were factories, bridges, and power plants, thousands of bombs also fell on homes, schools, and hospitals. In the midst of the campaign, Defense Secretary Robert McNamara estimated that we were killing 1,000 civilians a week. That's more than one 9/11 every single month -- for 44 months." - www.alternet.org

All during another war that was predicated on lies. Keeping rooting "USA, USA, USA" like our country is a football team instead of 300 million people most of whom have been gravely harmed by Republican policies.

Flag pins are crutches those who did not serve in the active military use to feel good about themselves. You served in the active military or you didn't. Nothing else matters.

John McCain deserves to be heckled for his bellicose speech. If all Giuliani knows is a "noun, verb and 9/11" McCain is only marginally better. All McCain wants to talk about is his scars, that he lived in a box and was tortured for 5 years. Like Howard Beale in Network, "I am mad as hell and I am not going to take this anymore." How can any legitimate journalist not question the insincerity of this man's perpetual over use of a certain period of his life in captivity life to shield him from any legitimate inquiry about the state of his mental and physical health. McCain should be asked whether it is prudent for him to put his political ambition and his desire to be President first. Don't his fellow countrymen have a right to inisist that their leaders be of sound mind and body before taking on the most challenging job of their lives? Why do we ease people into retirement in America at a certain age of maturity? While I would like to think that McCain is a sweet plaintain, the age spots suggest more that he is an overly ripe Banana. McCain's last campaign should have been 2000. Look at film clips from 2000 and compare to 2008. What you will see is night and day in terms of energy, mental accuity and verbal coherence. Last night in St. Paul, Americans saw a tired man on some form of medication.
