I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Sebelius

In a Thursday morning conference call for reporters organized by the Democratic National Committee, Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius pushed back against the idea that Republicans have cornered the market on small-town American values.

"I live in the American heartland, and have been a governor [here] for six years," she said. "I don't know any mayor in any small town in Kansas -- and we have a lot of mayors of small towns -- who hires a lobbyist and goes after earmarks the way Sarah Palin did." On Tuesday, the Washington Post reported that, as mayor of Wasilla, Palin secured more than $27 million in federal earmarks for a town with only 6,700 residents.

In her speech, Palin made a not-so-subtle pitch to snatch the sympathies of small-town voters -- touting her own experience as a mayor, and contrasting her self-professed values with those of Barack Obama. "I might add that in small towns, we don't quite know what to make of a candidate who lavishes praise on working people when they are listening, and then talks about how bitterly they cling to their religion and guns when those people aren't listening," Palin said, referring to remarks Obama made at a San Francisco fundraiser earlier this year.

Sebelius would have none of it. "What I hear from these folks in the heartland, is that people want to know how they're going to afford health care ... whether they're going to keep their jobs [and manage] the cost of gas and groceries," Sebelius said. "Again last night, what we heard were partisan attacks and no real solutions. ... I work with a Republican legislature every day. And I know what people expect us to do ... is to roll up your sleeves and get the job done."

"There's a disconnect between the way she positions herself as a small-town mayor ... and an inside Washington strategy," Sebelius added. "The kind of persona she is putting forward is very enticing, but I don't think it matches with her positions."

Florida Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz hammered a similar theme, saying that Palin "had a real problem with the truth last night" and adding that "even her hometown newspaper said she stretched the truth." (a reference to Thursday's Anchorage Daily News headline: "Some Of Palin's Remarks Stretch The Truth.")

Schultz also suggested that Palin had simply done a good job of robotically delivering an address she had little hand in crafting herself. "Whenever I have had to give significant speeches, I've spent a lot of time with the people assisting me in drafting remarks, adding my own voice," Schultz said. "Last night, I only heard Sarah Palin's voice [through] negative partisan attacks, with no substance or vision of where she thinks the country should go."

On Palin's effort to position herself and McCain as reformers, Schultz asked, "Where is the beef? Where is the evidence? Sarah Palin is not a reformer, she is under investigation in her home state for the abuse of power in trying to get a state trooper fired... If her best example of being a reformer was trying to sell a plane on E-Bay, that is not my definition of reform."

Shultz also questioned Palin's readiness to lead. "To say that her experience as a mayor of a town of 7,000 people ... makes her qualified to have her hands on the pillar of American foreign policy, if God forbid anything happens to John McCain, to suggest that is frightening," she said. "What kind of experience does Sarah Palin have to sit across the table from negotiators of the dangerous countries of this world?"

Obama adviser Robert Gibbs stepped in to rebut a few points of fact from Palin's speech. Specifically, he cited her reference to family members who own a small service station, saying they were precisely the kind of Americans who would receive "three times the tax relief" under Obama's tax plan. Gibbs also noted that Palin "picked up the worn-out playbook of Joe Lieberman," by claiming that Obama cannot point to any substantive legislative accomplishments. Even some of John McCain's surrogates know, Gibbs said, that the ethics and lobbying reforms in 2007, "the toughest since the scandal of Watergate," were passed due to Obama's work across party lines.

Interesting. I never thought about it. 70% federal land in Alaska. Wonder how that affects a state's economy? I lived in Ft. Riley, just outside of Junction City, Kansas, for 2 years. That was a beautiful piece of federal land, buffalo roaming the rolling hills. Must have been something in it for Junction City.

This is what I would like to see: An actual list of actual earmarks, titles, types, costs, state by state
Is there such a list somewhere?

One congressman I was reading about said that many of these earmarks are beneficial, sustaining the economy of the beneficiaries. Sebelius has to be kidding if she can tell me with a straight face that she would deny a place like Junction City the benefit of federal funds to support a population like Ft. Riley using its roads and infrastructure. I should call Topeka and Junction City mayor's office and ask them.

When we go about bandying "earmarks" like it's a dirty word, we may have to understand the consequences of banning them 100%. Similar to chemo killing the cancer AND the immune system.

In Wisconsin last Friday McCain himself repeated Palin's lie about Obama having "never" reached across the aisle. I wish I had been there myself to shout "Liar!"

What you're missing about Sarah Palin is her relentless pit bull simple mentality that gets her what she wants, screw the people she represents. This is what McCain sees in her. Someone who can bring home the bacon to the corporate welfare recipients waiting at the national table. McCain needs her to help pick up where Bush will leave off. Without Bush and Cheney, who will be there to fight fight fight for inflated defense contracts for KBR, Haliburton and the other war oil interests? Have you thought about that?

If Palin is your regular, small-town hockey-mom, How come she owns 26 cars? That's more cars than can fit in ALL of John McCain's garages. Is she starting a local taxi business? Is Mr. Mom Todd Palin learning how to work on cars at home? Are the cars used for transporting meth out of Wasilla? Inquiring minds and Jay Leno want to know.

Rational debate will only win over rational independents.

We've gotta mobilize folks!

We need young voters registered, and we need to help those without resources get to the polls... and we need to put pressure on our legislators to make sure our votes don't mysteriously disappear.

Ugh I just can't wait for Biden to carve her up with a smile already. This back and forth is useless. The Democrats should be hammering the media, not the American people on her lies.

If the MSS were not such wussies they would have gotten the essence of most of this charade into the public domain by now. Karl Rove and the other Lee Atwater imps have total control over PaCain and Palin. It is us, the American voter, who continue to fall for this bull**** hook, line, and sinker. It defies logic that this woman comes out of nowhere and the American public is swayed by a wink and a smile. Now once again, we have the Repub version of the Mother Mary. Her sole mantra is "Barack Obama is "not one of us". They will once again try to steal the election and we will most likely sit by and let it happen. Say what you will about "third-world" or "developing nations", the population at-large would be revolting in the streets if they get away with this. We silence ourselves in the name of democracy. The Repubthugs are steamrolling over us in the name of theocracy and foreign oil, and we jst let them.

We must fight. This is our country. Rove should be in jail, no one questions that. The corruption is so strong. The evil is this country is so strong, if we don't began to talk , talk, talk to people. This country will be destroy because of the color of one man's skin.

What a travisty. We invaded another country, to make them free, but All americans are not free, hate for our fellow countrymen (the colored man ) is hated.

This country will be destroyed if Republicans win. Kiss your country goodbye

Now we will be getting her first "interview" on ABC. Do you think that Chick will take it up the @ss or merely kiss Palin's? Either way, this is not going to be a face-to-face activity. What a hoot!

I sincerely hope you all have been volunteering for this campaign in your spare time.

Go to www.barackobama.com , register if you have to, and go to "action". Fill in your zip code and it will show you all the events in your area in the near future.

Most are voter registration drives and might take an hour, 2, or 4 hours of your time. Whatever you can give.

The more people vote, the better chance Obama will win. Statistically, its a guarantee.

Give. Volunteer. Vote. I do. www.barackobama.com

I don't think we should be paying much attention to Ms Mooselini. The Media (bizarrely led by the Enquirer) will be taking care of business for a while. Anything the Dems do to attack her will be spun as sexist mudslinging. We need to rise above it.

Focus on McCain. Focus on Judgement. Focus on his total lack of understanding of the Economy. Focus on the Lobbyists. Focus on More of the Same. Focus on They Must Think You're Stupid.

If we are going to win this, we need to keep it simple. Apparently, Americans are incapable of rational thought. So let's take a leaf out of the republican playbook and spell it out for them.

Very true. The election is about the President, not the VP. Obama should focus on his change vision, and spell out exactly how and when he will begin. The constant conservative remark about Obama is he gives good speeches, but doesn't say exactly how he will carry out his ideas. Obama needs to pin-point his ideas and use simple terms. Stop attacking McCain so much. We need to hear about his idea for America, and more importantly, how he will do it.

I agree most of the campaign has to be about issues and McCain's lack of judgement on almost everything since Bush was elected. However, it is very disturbing when Palin claims and/or preaches the invasion of Iraq is holy war and the U.S. is doing God's work.

This stupid almost manical assertation if the best fodder for recruitment that Muslim extremists could ever hope for in their fanaticism. They preach holy war and so does Palin. That should be very scary to every person whether American or anywhere in the world.

This who you're talking about?
2002 election:
Sibelius (D) 53%
Shallenburger (R) 45%

as of January 2006, was tied for the 12th most popular governor in the country

2006 election:
Sibelius (D) 57.8%
Barnett (R) 40.5%

As of 2004, 50 percent of Kansas voters were registered Republicans, compared to 27 percent as registered Democrats.

Yeah, the source is Wikipedia, but the original sources are cited in the Wikipedia article.

Seems like quite a few Republicans in Kansas aren't too embarrassed to vote for her.

I would love Sibelius to explain to Palin the duties of governor in relation to the National Guard. The Guard has been decimated by foreign adventures in Iraq and elsewhere and are overextended for their duties at home. Sibelius publicly called for this problem to be fixed. Where was Palin, planning an invasion of Russia or something before The Rapture? Since Alaska had the biggest earthquake in North American history which included a tidal wave in Valdez ("Remember the Exxon VALDEZ"), I wonder what she's done to prepare her Guard for disasters.

The Republican lie machine is now in full swing. All news and information coming from them or unnamed sources is now to be ignored! Palin is a VP candidate and the point should be John McCain and his Spare Change promises.

The platform of the GOP didn't get updated did it? So nothing has changed except the slogan (again). Stick to the issue of age and lies - Bush 90% of the time!

McCain age:72
Cut to a picture of him and bush with cake in New Orleans in 2005 - Katrina

Cut to words: 3 cancer surguries
McCain age:72
Cut to Pictures of Putin, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Kim II

How ironic to quote Hillary Clinton at the end of your comment. Sarkozy also used female surrogates to defeat his female opponent. One of them got the justice department and has substantially France's regional courthouses.
